    🧑‍💼 Who am I?
    Hi, I’m Jared, a passionate explorer of human behavior and decision-making. I hold a Ph.D. in chemistry and spent over a decade as an R&D manager at a Fortune 500 company, but I consider myself less of a scientist, more of a gameshow host. Recently, I left my successful career, returning to school to pursue my MBA. I’m fascinated with why people-including myself-often make illogical choices. This curiosity sparked the creation of my CZcams channel, where I dive into topics like behavioral economics, productivity, and professional development. Combining my scientific training over four decades of living as a human, interacting with others and doing dumb things myself, I aim to share insights that help you optimize your life.

      Biggest career risk for me was quitting a comfortable job I liked for traveling the world in 2019. Was one of the best decisions I've made and it turned out really well especially before COVID19 hit. When I came back, I found a better job with more money.
      I am now tired of that job that I got since COVID 19 and thinking of quitting it to pivot to something else, perhaps online day trading. It's something I wanted to do for a while but never did. The other option is also an MBA but it seems like I am not cut out for 9 to 5.

    The last decade of my life has been pretty tumultuous…highest of highs with the lowest of lows… I’ve always tried not to get too caught up in the everyday grind (and maybe it shows because I’ve had a lot of struggles in getting ahead… employers just aren’t paying enough)… but I really do value my sanity and it’s been tested for sure.
    I’m starting to feel like maybe the corporate life isn’t for me… and in trying to draw from my own passions and the high points of recent years maybe I can find something that I can turn into a career… because yes, what is “fine” just isn’t cutting it anymore. It’s like things moved too fast for too long for me to ever be ok with what I feel stuck doing now.
    Hope that made sense… it’s been at least a couple years of heavy brainstorming and building up some ideas here and there, I just hope I can finally stumble on an “a-ha” moment soon.

      @@drummerAVA It definitely makes sense. For me, it's just easy to stick with the default. If you have the ability to do it, I'm becoming a fan of just trying things (or living vicariously though others) and assessing what you like, and often more importantly what you don't like, and progressing toward what gives you energy and fulfills your needs.
      As you say, not getting caught up in the everyday grind is good general advice.
      Best of luck on your continued journey!

    This is a genuinely good video and a lot of insights here. I am going through a very similar challenge and very close to giving in my notice. Not sure yet what I want to pivot into. I really appreciate this video and it's nice to know I am not alone.

    • @jaredheymann
      @jaredheymann  Před 25 dny +1

      You're definitely not alone, and I'm glad my story was helpful! My best advice is to just start talking to other people in a variety of roles and put yourself into their situation. There's a lot of people I spoke with who were extremely happy, but when I thought about their day I realized it would be a terrible fit for me. Find what gives you energy and then assess what transitioning to that would require. Take the smallest action and start your personal assessment and see where it goes. Best of luck and let me know how else I can help you.

    1 year ago if I watched this I would think you’re crazy and out of your mind. But after just leaving my job making 150k a year with no college (sales job). I completely get it… if you can live off less than your high salary, and you have something you enjoy doing more, that’s true wealth. Not the dollar amount you’re paid, I make 1/3 now from what I used to. But I also have enough saved where I could take years off too, so in the end I feel like I’m winning now. And getting 13k monthly checks made me feel no different when I was getting them, which is what started me to question why I’ve been chasing money and ignoring what I really want to do. Good luck with your path!

      @@noahvalley8268 Managing lifestyle creep is real. Determining what brings you happiness enables you to invest in yourself and your family/friends strategically. Saving and investing in yourself matters and trying to pair that with something you enjoy is the dream. In the end, it's very freeing to switch from looking at dollars to evaluating money in terms of time. It's not reality for so many living paycheck to paycheck, but on the other side of that life stage truly changes your perspective.

    Jared, I know you go into it in this video but I would love a video where you did the pros and cons of leaving your job. Especially as you were making over 200k+ and how difficult it was to walk away. You mulled it over for a year before you made the decision. What were you thinking about? What were the issues that gave you anxiety and a pause? I think this video, you packed so much information and I was hoping you would go a bit into depth about the reasons you quit, what was hard to walk away from, etc.

      Thanks so much for the feedback. This was probably a bit more the emotional origin to set up a number of other videos, including one releasing today on my career change mistakes. A pros/cons discussion is a great idea, and I'll absolutely start on that. I have been trying to balance giving advice based on what I've learned, though purely focusing on my process may have value for folks. Again, thanks for the ideas and I'll get that shared as soon as I can. Cheers.

      @@jaredheymann Looking forward to it. Would be helpful to discuss what things were important to you and what you were thinking about when you gave the resignation. I have a team, I make over 200k, the job is fully remote, and I just hate the job now. Maybe I hate corporate? I am so ready for a break from the corporate world but also find that it's difficult to walk away from a cushy job. However, at 38 I realize I am wasting time looking for the actual thing I want and the opportunity cost. Anyways, great video and liked how you covered emotional side as well. Very different from the typical videos you see on CZcams of people quitting. Also, it hits different when a 20 something quits their job vs. someone in their 30s who is well established in their career.
