    $125,000 ST. LOUIS OPEN
    North Oaks Bowl, St. Louis, Mo., Feb 17-22, 1986
    Weber Wows Hometown Crowd
    Pete Weber accomplished the thrill of a lifetime when he captured the Professional Bowlers Association's $125,000 St. Louis Open.
    He won in front of a hometown crowd, something his illustrious father, Hall of Famer Dick Weber, had never been able to do in his brilliant PBA career. "You guys (newsmen) cannot believe it," Pete said in the pressroom afterward, "but I really wanted that trophy more than I wanted that $18,000 check."
    It was just moments after he had defeated leading qualifier Dennis Jacques, 267-227, to come up with his eighth title on the pro tour.
    But it was the semifinal game that inspired a cheering crowd at North Oaks Bowl and a national television audience. In that game Weber finished with six consecutive strikes to shut out Norm Duke in a 247-234 thriller.
    Weber was in second position in the final and waited until the five-foot, five-inch Duke came up with a pair of 235 games in eliminating non-champion Mats Karlsson, 235-224, and one-time winner Billy Young Jr., 235-207.
    CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
    Pos. Name, City/State Total Amount
    1 Pete Weber, St. Louis 514 (2 games) $18,000
    2 Dennis Jacques, Middletown, N.J. 227 (1 game) 9,500
    3 Norm Duke, Fort Worth, Texas 704 (3 games) 7,000
    4 Billy Young Jr., Tulsa, Okla., 207 (1 game) 5,500
    5 Mats Karlsson, Gothenburg, Sweden 224 (1 game) 4,500
    PLAYOFF RESULTS - Duke defeated Karlsson, 235-224; Duke defeated Young, 235-207; Weber defeated Duke, 247-234; and in the championship game, Weber defeated Jacques, 267-227.

      @@Mark-sj3xb They are/were all competent, professional journalists. But in my view, Chris Shenkel was the best commentator to ever do bowling broadcasts, at least on colour tv. He was regarded as a very good broadcaster before ever being assigned bowling, he called some of the greatest golf rounds ever. He should be remembered as both a good man and an all time great sports commentator.

    Nelson Burton jr.was always who I wished I could have his perfect form style. He had incredible muscle memory for sure cause he never looked different on any ball he threw so smooth!conditions were hell when he was coming up in the 60s , the balls the used sucked, the pins were heavier, and it truely required strength. What a great stroker he was!

    Bowling is one of the oldest televised sports. Nobody could do bowling on TV like the ABC Pro Bowlers Tour, Chris Schekel and Nelson Burton, Jr. This show was one of the two shows spun off from Wide World of Sports, the other one was the American Sportsman.

    • @alonzotanner1226
      @alonzotanner1226 Před 6 lety +2

      Maybe she was mad, but they stayed married at least until 88-89. Cuz I saw a telecast on youtube that was in 87, the year after this one, and Dee Dee was pregnant with their 2nd child. Mustve been the type of relationship where it was turbulent, but the make up sex was probably amazing. By 90-91, Pete already had a new girlfriend showing up in the spectator seats named Kim, who was also hot. That probably didn't last more than a few years cuz by like 95-96, his current wife, Tracy, was already showing up on telecasts. Yeah, I notice this cuz Pete Weber is, for all his faults with his ego, my favorite bowler of all time so I've seen a lot of youtube videos of him over the years, AND I saw him in 2008 at the Dick Weber Open (Which he sadly lost in the 2nd round and Scroggins won). He was actually pretty nice. Got a pic with him after the show outside. Had to catch him before he left. He was smoking a cigarette when I asked him to sign my bowling pin and take a pic with him.

    • @dxjohncenacaz
      @dxjohncenacaz Před 6 lety +2

      you say he's your favorite bowler, etc, but then you go on to say 'for all his faults with his ego' and it makes me wonder if he's actually your favorite or not.
      pete doesnt have an ego. he's one of the nicest guys ever and he doesnt have an ego.
      everything he does on tv or while bowling is just an act.
      he intends to make more people interested in bowling and make it less boring as well as entertain and he does a damn good job at it.
      that's why he was 'actually pretty nice.' because he IS nice, and what you see in real life is different than what you see on tv.

    • @alonzotanner1226
      @alonzotanner1226 Před 6 lety +1

      dxjohncenacaz calm down. It was a bad choice of words. I meant for all the bad things he’s demonized for by much of the public. As I said, he was actually pretty nice even though he lost. He takes his bread and butter very seriously. No need to try and call me out like you’re high and mighty. I really have always been a fan of the guy. He was great for how he treated me. Jack Jurek was a little bitch for leaving before the end of the telecast though. I don’t care if you demonize me for that.
