  • Hot Springs and waterfalls, two of the greatest natural things top enjoy outdoors. I had some great plans for this weeks adventure, but unfortunately those plans had to change, and I sure am happy they did. I have never had the chance to explore the Douglas Channel before, or even the areas around Kitimat, and a whole new door has opened for adventures. This area is so full of beauty and life, and the locals are the icing on the cake.
I knew of that beauty camp spot on the Kitimat River from my first ever trip north with the MoHo. Can you believe I even took that big rig down into there? This season, with the new rig it was obviously no problem at all, and we even got to take the rig right down onto the beach. Right away we were greeted by a couple of the full time residents staying at the camp spot, and meeting Don, I knew I wanted to sit down for a chat. We shared fishing stories and travel stories over a couple of drinks, and he was kind enough to share some local leads too.
There are several Hot Springs on the Douglas Channel, but the only one to safely access with a boat my size in a day is Weewanie. The locals have done an amazing job constructing the pools and the building at this spring, and it is far enough from civilization that you will likely be the only one soaking. If you do get the opportunity to head down the channel for some hot springin, I definitely recommend a stop at Jesse Falls. Waterfalls into the ocean, though beautiful, are really not uncommon, but Jesse Falls are very unique. There is no river flowing from Jesse Lake, it is a straight shot from the end of the lake right down into the Pacific Ocean. From the boat it is difficult to see, but with a drone you get a glorious view of the lake, and the drop off into the ocean.
Hot Springs, Waterfalls and good company aside, how about some good meals too! We spent the past couple of weeks pulling up empty traps, it was so nice to finally see some colour coming up. We had two successful days out there, and enjoyed some incredible fresh seafood feasts. Another great adventure for the books.

Good one, when i visited Wewa hot spring in 99 i was there for a week. Crab in the bay, halibut and prawns on the drop off, around the corner was a salmon stream with a waterfall onto saltwater and at high water you could skiff into the river. I found two deer carcasses on the mossy bank and realized i was in a happy hunting ground of probably a cougar, very spooky feeling. At that time there was a hot water pipe into the main tub and a cold pipe you could swing into or out of tub to regulate temp and a washing tub to clean yourself before entering. Wewa is the traditional name, Wewani is the white mans invention. cheers

Dustin, rotate your boat trailer tires to include the spare... Check your bushings on the spring hangers. Those things are designed to be pulled a couple times a year and then put in storage to sit and not be used... most of them anyways. Safe travels

That's a nice place you were at I've been there too if you go to Terrace BC try this Kitsumkalum River that's north of the town. Last time I was there it was full of pink salmon literally you could walk across it and not get your feet wet seriously. And all you need to catch them is a hook about a 1-0 hook and pink fluff material that you follow up and tight to your hook with a little shot of lead about half a foot from your hook and I'm kind of it was really great fishing

Here's an old prawn locating trick for you. Set where you find waterfalls coming off a cliff or steep rock. The shrimp hang out there b/c the freshwater from the melt is mineral rich and feeds the critters that the bigger critters feed on. This is especially true coming off hanging glaciers, but it remains a truism for finding the little buggers. Same goes for those sheer walls where it drops off into the deep, you don't have to go as deep as you've been setting either. They're anywhere and everywhere. They like having a place to hide so finding them where cliffs drop off is associated with rubble piles from long ago and covered with mud that accumulates. I mentioned in the last vid that those little critters resembling a flattened out lobster are what we call pinchbugs commercial prawning. (Results may. . . . ) Bummer about theft, that ain't cool. Some locals with a hard-on for tourists, probably punk kids, just like everywhere. Cheers, carry on.

It was awful how little respect there is for other people's property. But take comfort in knowing they won't catch anything with those pots! And did you a favor!! It turned out to be a blessing in disguise!!🎉 Nice catch!!👏🏼👏🏼

That's frustrating your gear was stolen but you seemed to handle it well. I'm glad you got new gear. Do you think someone saw you as an outsider and did it to be spiteful? Anyway beautiful rainy adventure. I love seeing the big catches of crab!
