This book in particular has been a fantastic resource in my research for this video. If you want to know more detail about Thrust 2 than I could cover in a 23 minute video, Richard Noble tells the whole story here. Highly recommended!

It says everything about the current state of our country that Jacob Rees Mogg was knighted this year for a career as a professional toady and Richard Noble, despite masterminding 2 world land-speed records along with all the associated engineering projects and fantastic publicity he has brought to the UK, remains (ironically) not ennobled. He's been a hero of mine since those early pre-record appearances on Tomorrow's World and remains so today, and thanks to Scarf and Goggles for such a fantastic in-depth interview and retrospective
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pathetic isn't it ,just shows you that in England its not what you know its who you know 😮 the old school tie club ,these narcissistic types/politicians have no shame/honour or integrity.
Do you object to Tony Blair's Knight Hood? No thought not...
@@CRISIS550166 EVERYBODY objects to that 🤣
What a fantastic story. To hear Richard talk about the project is really great. Looking forward to the next installment
Putting it together now. Ready late Nov I hope.
@@ScarfAndGogglescan’t wait
This series is fascinating. I could listen to Noble talk about these projects for hours.
The phrase "A man possessed" barely covers it. I like that you and your channel let the story tell the story.
No-one better qualified to tell the story than Mr Noble himself!
I can't wait for Part Three, thank you for this superbly-researched and presented video, as we've come to expect!
I met John Akroyd at the Bloodhound test run in Newquay. He was obviously struggling with Alzheimer's and he didn't really know where he was or what was going on but he seemed to remember his time working on Thrust 2 and was enthusiastic when telling me about it
I'm sorry never to have met him - he was held in very high regard by everyone I spoke to. A talented man who led an amazing life.
Alzheimer's is such a terrible disease, so sad to hear John Akroyd has it. But it's good that he remembers Thrust 2, people cling on to the best bits of their lives.
This is simply brilliant. A fantastic 'boys-own story' that has all the makings of a blockbuster movie, including the seeming disaster before the final triumph which accompanies all of these types of film. In today's terms, the budgets they had were pin money, but the drive, expertise and ultimately, the irrepressible bravery of Richard Noble allowed them to perform the impossible feat in its day. Can't wait for episode 3!
I miss seeing Richard on the TV 📺, great days great days 🤠🇬🇧🙏
I love hearing him say, "It was just fantastic!"
It’s marvellous to see the history behind these runs of the land speed record car, although will not be at speed. It will be good to see the thousand horsepower of Sunbeam run again and looking forward to your more videos on this car. Thanks so much Michael
You have done an amazing job of this story. Something people will be watching for decades to come. Thank you.
Just shows that Richard and the Thrust 2 team were determined not to be beaten- This determination is sadly missing from todays snowflake society - Great story and brialliantly delivered - Thanks a million !
Good to see you accepted the propaganda like a good little sheep. Blaming everything on imaginary snowflakes so you won’t get the notion to actually do anything to better the world.
You're most welcome!
Bloodhound could do with some of this determination.
Excellent series and what a nice bloke Richard Noble is.
Glad you're enjoying it. He's a top bloke.
Always a joy when one of your films arrives but this series is especially wonderful ( even tracked down of copy of 'Cars and car conversions July1977' just because of this ) Richard has long been a hero of mine and it's a pleasure to listen to him here Thanks for all your hard work.
You're welcome - thanks for watching!
Richard seems like the kind of guy I'd like to have a beer with. Very well done documentary!
Thank you! And you're right - Noble is a top bloke.
Absolute fascinating story been waiting for this, shows the insight into the struggles and hardship as well as the adulation into the record itself ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Part 3 in progress, hopefully live towards the end of November
I remember that car parked in the factory where I worked , British Timken . We supplied the tapered roller wheel bearings .
Timken made some of the best bearings.
Mini rear suspension, jazzed up for 600+ :) Bloodhound had front and rear subframes. Richard somehow has his cars with Mini connections, however unintentionally. :D
You spotted it too, I had pretty much the same shocks on my 1968 Cooper.
This is a brilliant series, i literally cannot wait for part 3
A Great British Hero.
I can’t wait, absolutely riveting.
Thank you for watching!
Bravo looking forward to episode 3
Glad you're enjoying the story
What a hero Richard is , I’ve met him a couple of times as he used to have his VW Bora serviced at my garage where I work. He is a really nice chap , full of enthusiasm. His autobiography is a fantastic read too
He still drives a VW!
@@ScarfAndGoggles if they are good enough for Richard they are good enough for me !
another great S&G vid. Thanks
You're welcome - thanks for watching
They came to a former RAF airfield (Leconfield) in East Yorkshire to do their shakedown runs. Amazing standing by the side of the runway as it came past at speeds of 250, up to 400 MPH. And standing a few feet from the beast as they did a tethered engine test.
One their guys (Ron) achieved a life time ambition to break the sound barrier - which he did by being towed down the runway while sitting in a 'Portaloo'!
Can only imagine how Richard must have felt after that little hic up! Looking forward to next video!
Absolutely GREAT! Can't wait until part Three!
Thanks for another brilliant film; looking forward to part 3.
Amazing true story, Richard is the man.
Glad you're enjoying it!
I’m compelled to say what I have to say this way……………..
Bloody good show!!!!!!!!
My family is still in the House of Lords. So I just had to use the Queen’s English. I really do love your channel and content.
Keep it up!!!
Richard is going 500 mph with steering that barely works, what a absolute mad lad.
What wonderful chaps. 😀👍
Do Thrust SSC! Like, now!! LOL Love you're videos! Thankyou! =)
I'm so thrilled by these 2 parts of this phenomenal story so far - and told by the legendary Richard Noble himself too!!
Can't wait to see the next part, this is British engineering at its absolute best...
🙏🇬🇧
Thanks alot for these videos mate, this is why we don't watch the tv for years, you guys do a much better job because you like what you talk about.
Thank you so much - glad you’re enjoying them!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for making this fantastic video!
Feel free to do as many of these shows as you like! Fantastic telling of a great story.
Thanks!
I saw this car again a few weeks ago. Haven't seen in person for 10 years or so. I didn't realise how small it actually is. Especially in comparison to bloodhound and thrust ssc
SSC was a big car, there's no mistaking it. I met Richard Noble and Glynne Bowsher in 1997, and had a good look at the car and all the heat damage it sustained around the back.
@@polbecca I remember SSC being huge. Bloodhound is surprisingly tall but I guess I should have expected that when it needs room for a jet engine and a rocket sat on top of each other😂
This is brilliant! Can’t wait for part 3!
Great series cant wait to see part 3
Wonderful series! Hearing it from the horses mouth is very revealing. Mr. Thrust is so nice to listen to, you can tell he is a true gent.
Many thanks!
Excellent, thanks.
You are welcome!
Thank you for this. Just awesome. I can remember as a kid, three channels on the television, somehow finding out about Richard Noble and Thrust. I couldn't get enough of it. I devoured anything about speed and cars then, I knew all the cars, all the records. Breedlove and Gabelich were my heros. Then Richard became one. This brought me back in a major way! Can't wait for the next installment!
Loving this series
Glad you're enjoying it!
fantastic - thank you - excited for final episode
Working on it now - likely a few weeks away though
Bloody marvelous! Give me two weeks to get an orchestra ....classic!
He's got some good stories...!
I've heard that one before. I'm always tempted to say "I'm in as your tuba player!"
What an amazing series thank you for putting it togther
Glad you enjoy it!
Great doco
Great job cant wait for part 3 guys,😊 brilliant post
Thanks so much
Loving this series so far, and would love to see the tale of Thrust SSC as well.
Another amazing video, these are always so informative to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I appreciate your films. I have a love for Land Speed racing and there isn't enough current info these days. I keep my eyes open for new Documentaries but there really are none. I'm happy to see somebody give their all to break a record and not even achieve it. Even if it's only 100mph.
Thank you - glad you enjoy the channel
Amazing work! Can't wait for part 3. Never knew about that near-disaster event. This is why you never change important things like refference points before a crucial run. Because humans do fail...
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it
The near disaster event at Greenham Common is in all of Richard Noble's books that have anything about Thrust 2 since it is such a key moment.
This is a brilliant series. Can't wait for part 3.
Glad you're enjoying it!
Top level documentary work this is as usual 👏 , looking forward to the next upload already!!
Thank you. Working on Part 3 now, likely ready late November
@@ScarfAndGoggles it will be worth waiting for however long it takes!!!
This is a fantastic piece of documentation. If you want to make part 3 a little longer that will be fine with me.
Thanks so much! Am working on part 3 right now - it may come in a little longer, hard to say at the moment!
I'll bet Noble could have got an orchestra together if that would have helped. An incredible leader.
Good News!
I’ve been looking forward to part II.
Thank you
More to come! Part 3 likely late next month...
@@ScarfAndGoggles
Looking forward to Part III already.
Thank you for all your videos.
It may seem a small matter, but thank you so much for not constantly reading out metric equivalents when giving measurements. Putting them on screen instead. Great video by the way, as always.
Thanks - seemed the best way to try and please everyone!
For Land Speed Records, these were the best years. Similar to the Reno Air Races when Rare Bear, Voodoo, Dago Red, Strega were all Racing at one time. Reno Air Races has finally ended in 2023.
Why your channel doesn't have millions of subs and this video very, very many thousands of views is a complete mystery to me.
Me too!
Amazing achievement… even more so Thrust SSC to break the sound barrier. Such a shame that Bloodhound stalled due to loss of funding.
Bloody Nora . What a story
Yep - it reads like a film script!
The fact that he was able to repeatedly stop with 12 feet to spare shows just how disciplined he was. Remaining under power a fraction of a second too long and toy would run out of runway.
That was one of the facts that grabbed me most in our interview. Incredibly focussed man...
Hence how stupid it was (as Richard admits) to do one last run with a different marker car for the braking.
Richard Noble did indeed set the absolute world land speed record in 1983. However, it was on a technicality, since it did not break The Blue Flame's 630.388 mph absolute world record in the kilometer by 1%. The Blue Flame's mile record was 622.407 mph - Richard got that one. The absolute world record is the fastest FIA world land speed record. So, now the fastest FIA world record was the mile flying start record at 633 mph, not the 630 mph kilometer world record then still held by The Blue Flame. Andy Green would get that one, too, in 1997 in the supersonic Thrust jet car. It was unfortunate The Blue Flame sponsors erroneously publicized the 622 mph mile record, and never corrected it later.
Riveting series! (of the stainless steel type we now know)
Shared. 😁
Thank you kindly!
I see Scarf and Goggles, i click like, i watch, i am not disappointed.
Thank you!
whens part 3 coming????
Working on it now - likely late November.
The budweiser rocket car done by the us airforce was the first one to go over the speed of sound but it wasnt official since it was one run, no second run within an hour.
Well nobody ever remembers the second place man 🇬🇧
Not sure that USAC officiated the timing either.
. . . no sonic boom either???
It is very doubtful whether the Budweiser rocket ever exceeded the speed of sound even momentarily. There is zero evidence that it did, no shock waves, no boom, nothing. And the radar tracking clearly said it was subsonic.
I can’t be the only one who is concerned by the fact that someone who was planning to set a speed record forgets they changed the shut down marker car during testing
Richard Noble tells a great story but how he got money out of British Airways is extraordinary
Whats happened to Bloodhound?
The saddest four words in the English language are probably "what might have been".
Bloodhound had what it takes to be a contender, but took far too long and exhausted people's interest and sponsorship opportunities. Covid lockdown was the final straw I fear. In theory Bloodhound is still looking for sponsors, but I seriously doubt it will happen now.
@@owensmith7530 I think we had the heroic age of landspeed attempts, and we had the first technological age, and now we are in the second. I suspect that if someone manages to reach 1000mph the urge to go much faster will probably end. What became of Bloodhound is obviously still capable but yes, it got too bogged down in science education. And goodness knows, Andy Green isn't getting any younger either!
In all honesty as long as it’s been since it was designed it would be smarter to start over anyway everything has advanced so much (when it comes to technology and engineering a day’s a week , a weeks a month and months a year )
@@54raceman It would be too expensive to start Bloodhound again. Plus the aerodynamic issues to solve have not changed.
Pretty funny he admits to funding it via fraud.
Statue of limitations is probably up by now anyway lol
