as i understand most helicopters can land relativly safely when having their engines cut out. by angling the rotors in a certain way you can turn the helicoptor into a gyrocopter and slow your terminal velocity way down
What you describe is called auto rotation. It can work if the only problem is a loss of power, but it won't save you if you have a main rotor failure, a tail rotor failure, a seized transmission, etc. A whole-aircraft parachute for rotorcraft could be a lifesaver.
Not every pilot are skilled enough to deal with it. Unfortunatelly as i see, it's not very common to train that. At least here in Brazil you have some few very specialized professionals that'll teach you.

What?! Autorotation is basically the only thing you train when learning how to fly a helicopter, once you know the basics.

The issue with the parachute on the top of the helicopter is that the rotors being damaged is one of the main reasons you would go down (In a combat scenario) so there is a pretty good chance the chute would be damaged in the process.

Its not really needed, helicopters can utilise autorotation while falling to keep just enough spin to keep rotors lifting the craft. It means a heli can have a full engine shutdown and still land.

one slight problem with the helicopter parachute, most Helicopter crashes happen while its hovering at a height that would be too low for the Parachute to either finish deploying or reducing enough downward momentum, you'd actually be better off with some kind of system that creates a inflatable smooth landing platform under the helicopter to displace the landing impact

iipanda animals are not smarter than humans, I know a lot of people think that animals hide some sort of secret intelligence in reality that elephant was most likely trained to do that. If animals were smarter then they would have at least started some sort of civilization as all sentient beings do. Elephants are smart but no where near the level of us monkeys.

The rotors of helicopters start spinning when it falls down which causes enough drag to brake the helicopter in case of a power loss. A parachute makes no sense.
