Hi Mark, cat genetics fan here! In the video, you asked about the markings above the cat's eyes and whether they're consistent across all cats and I wanted to share with you what I know. All tabby cats (regardless of breed) have a characteristic "M" formed by the stripes on their forehead. So you were right about that, and remembering that "M" shape can be a helpful tool when drawing the face of a tabby.
Also, if you ever want to draw a cat that is white and another color (called a bicolor or Piebald cat), you should know that the white starts on the chest/belly and spreads out from there. This is called whitespotting and it follows a special pattern of progression! So you can have a black cat with a white spot on the chest or a white cat with black patches on its back, but you can't have the reverse.

Mark makes drawing realism easy in the manner he explains the process. As for being great teacher he would be an exceptional teacher because he doesn't talk down to get the point across just the opposite he talks to everyone in a relaxing way to set everyone at ease. For reference the breed of cat he has drawn in this video is known as a" Grey Tabby", a very popular breed and an affectionate breed.

Mark, I love what you have done with your talent as I began drawing after watching one of your videos. I was retired and broke, so when I saw what you could do with a pencil and plain paper I was hooked. After doing many of your drawings along with you and old man time lapse, I put them in a folder and tried learning from some other teachers. Recently I have found those old drawings, done in Mark Crilley style using measured lines and some erasing, are often better than those done more recently. Since I have only abundant praise for your contribution to my waning years, I need to find something to poke fun at you with as you are bound to hear the praise everyday,. I will make the only comment I can that does not agree - I would say the cat was designed, not evolved with those features. There! - The closest thing to a disagreement with the artist who has changed my life for the best and whom I will always be grateful. Keep being you, Mark - you could believe in most anything and you would always be the most loved artist I have ever viewed.

Yes! There is consistency with striping patterns on tabby cats. All of them have the “M” on the forehead, some more pronounced than others. There are videos on CZcams all about cat genetics, and some deal with tabby patterns. Recently, we acquired three different tabbies (it’s a pattern, not a breed) and I got all interested. Thanks for this video, it’s awesome. Incidentally, some have black whiskers, too.

Thank you so much for this video!!!!! One of my wonderful second grade students just lost her 13 year old cat and he looked just like this! She grew up with this cat being her best friend. I'm working with her mom to adopt a shelter kitten, but I wanted to give her this drawing. Thanks again.

I would watch a 2 hour video if it had continuous classic corny Crilley commentary. It just wouldn't be the same without it.

It's so perfect! I don't know how you do it Mark! I drew the kitten, four of them because I have four kittens! I learned to draw the kitten for memory and I hope that I get this cat for memory too! Keep up the good work Mark!

Hey Mark. I am a big fan of all your tutorials. I had some questions:
1.) If you haven't already done so, can you make a video on drawing or designing accessories for character designs.
2.) And also when trying to make your own graphic novel, especially one you want to market well, how to limit the gore in action novels without losing intensity.
I am a huge fan and have your books. I am trying to create my own graphic novel. Could you please help me to find a proper balance. Take care.
