    What are some features you feel make sailing as we get older easier or more efficient ?

    • @monikabatista2233
      @monikabatista2233 Před 2 lety +5

      Shade, full bimini with connectors from the dodger. Regardless of where you live you want to protect yourself from the harmful UV light. As you get older skin is more sensitive to sun.

      @ston3kill3r Před 2 lety +1

      Separate head and shower is a must , along with in mast or boom furling system , less time you need on deck , specially as I sail solo 90% of the time and as someone else said a full Bimini with connectors from the dodger is a must

      All great suggestions, adding some sort of sun protection would be awesome, those UV Rey’s are a killer.

      Can you also do an episode on features for a solo sailer?

      Hand holds. A decent heater. Sailing is cold in this part of the world. Lake Superior last week was still 38*F. Water makers last longer in fresh water. Electric fishing down riggers and turrets for crossbow fishing or signal cannon. Figure as I get older will move from bow fishing to cross bow fishing. Getting gear on and off boat easily is a must. Next boat I get I am going to Isle Royal Camping for a week. And as much space as I can afford. Had a Landfall 43 and with minimum 7 people it felt small. And that's just the kids still living at home. It was old and cheap. It wasn't something I wouldn't sail it in Superior. Kind of like a first car. Not the greatest but it will be the base for how you judge other vehicles later. I don't want to crack bulk heads 2 days from land. Lee Boards would be nice too for on the great lakes to save labor. Building a square backed cedar strip canoe in my back yard. The market sucks now but sales are coming.

    Good topic, but I don't totally agree on everything. Last year we moved from a single helm sailboat to a dual helmed boat. We just don't like the arrangement - docking can be tough when its a tie up opposite to the helm that has the engine controls. A center wheel has better all around visibility. Our new to us boat has a Raymarine Evo autohelm - now this is essential. It is far and above way better than the older fluxgate driven system - in both heavy seas and downwind. Being older ourselves, we don't get anything like as tired downwind or in heavy weather because we can trust the Evo system. Electric winches- absolutely, a must have. But, if you don't have any and are budget constrained, just add one on the cabin top and make sure all key lines will lead to it in an emergency. That's how our previous boat was, and boy did that get us out of jams many times. Last comment -don't get a 25 HP dinghy engine - us older folks just can't handle them. Nothing wrong with a small engine.

    Very informational and very appreciated. My husband and I are tipping our toes in the water, so to speak, into planning to live aboard a sailboat, thinking and researching right now at this point. So this was very helpful.

    If the boat comes with electric winches great. If not they can always be added later. In mast furling is pretty much a must have though. Same with the rest of the features. Great vid.

    Can't agree more on the companionway - we were on a number of vessels including larger Catalinas that had companionway steps that were basically glorified ladders.

    Ever item you outlined in this video is all basic things one needs to outfit your yacht properly. If one is planning on sailing long distance these items will make life much more comfortable. Thanks again Chris for information that helps us all!

    Very first option should have been a Catamaran. Totally agree on everything else. Also, if you want to be a true world sailor, get heat and AC if your boat doesn't have it.

    Years ago it was common wisdom among long distance cruisers that you avoided in-mast furling because you were screwed if it became fouled and wouldn’t work at a critical moment. Are today’s in-mast furling systems so much better that they don’t foul or jam?

    Sail drive vs shaft? Is sail drive really as unsafe as some make it out to be? Is shaft drives really a bullet proof design? Are manufacture’s just just trying to save costs by using sail drives? I’ve been hearing this a lot lately.

    • @gundeprieved
      @gundeprieved Před 2 lety

      @ABC gang thank you. Surprisingly there is still so many ppl on the internet saying you need shaft drive, full keel and skeg hung rudder to cross oceans. That a sail drive will sink or vessel if you hit anything but a shaft won’t. One guy online claimed he just used a hammer to straighten his shaft. Lol I don’t know about that

    • @captratty2167
      @captratty2167 Před měsícem +1

      Sail drive is more costly to maintain and you can not afford to defer maintenance. Shaft will take a fair amount of neglect. Haul outs can be less frequent with a good shaft installation; prop speed and anodes looked at every two years or so. Saildrive haulouts are usually an annual event.

    Good topic. I wonder what the demographics are of today's cruisers? Yet, that's not an easy question to answer because of all the variables, like full time vs part-time cruiser, etc. etc.

      given in Australia there are 9 vacant houses for every homeless person ABS data thanks to our government transfering the biggest shift of wealth in our country's history.
      I understand why the yacht market travels high.
      Especially trailer sailors, they are asking nearly 3 times the price.
      there's a lot of decent hardworking people looking at sailing away. Homes and accommodation is beyond the reach of many people.

      @@colsmith7257 Australia has obscene house prices. Slowly collapsing now. Lets hope things get back to how they should be. We are not young but could not afford to live in Australia any more, having gone back to watch over ageing and sick family and had to return to the UK (a long way from London) to afford housing.

    A bit off topic but what would the cost be of refitting no matter hull material a 40’ sloop racer/cruiser in a very minimalist spartan design ? Single Head with shower and tub very clean and everything easy to get to sort of like a Rat Rod.

    • @HighPowerOptionsTrades
      @HighPowerOptionsTrades Před 2 lety

      @ABC gang something from salvage that can be rebuilt custom gutted and started anew. I think most internal designs are ridiculous. Just give me a Head a Galley and a place to put my mat for rest and storage for sails and supplies of course

      @ABC gang maybe my description could’ve been better but you’re complicating matters. Simply a hull 30’-50’ new rigging an engine, galley and head also storage with an open floor plan. Space flight has been privatized you act as if the subject of a custom build requires Oncologist 🙄😂🙄🤣

      Really? If you’re offended by this video, then you’re basically a snowflake always on the lookout for someone to be offending you. Get over it dude! Chris is speaking in general terms and giving advice for to consider if they’re getting up there in age but want to still enjoy sailing. If you’re 66 and can still handle sailing in a jungle gym, then more power to YOU, but the majority of 66 year olds will see these suggestions as very sound advice. Stop being a potato….
