    The most epically unfinished story is from Darksiders. The first came out 14 years ago and ended on a huuuuge cliffhanger. Then they released 3 standalone Darksiders titles and somehow managed not to move the main story not for a bit, every story was either a prequel or spin-off.

    • @Eikichi4798
      @Eikichi4798 Před 28 dny +26

      Each main line game happened in parallel.
      The epic ending of Darksiders 1, where all the siblings show up, each sequel has been their journey to reach that point. The plan was/is (hopefully it's still being worked on) to play through the story of each sibling, and then have a final game that picks up where Darksider 1 ended, except this time, you as the player, have now experienced the story of all of the main characters leading up to that point, instead of just 1.
      IIRC, I think there was an interview that said the final game would let you switch between the different siblings, letting you choose the fighting style you prefer.

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 Před 20 dny

      Yup.
      Imo the biggest issue is they went too far open world after all 'the too linear' complaints with 13 and made the first continent far too big for what little main story you really get there (it could've been about 1/3rd or even a 1/4th fo it's size) and the other continents should've have their size increased along with exploring more of it along with the main cities (or at least parts of them...if they tried to make them to scale it may make the cities too big) of all of the main continents being explorable/having major plot relevance to the story.
      VIIR and XVI on the other hand got the overall size of their world right (granted...will still say they're making everything far bigger than needed, especially when considering the cliff sized of Cosmo Canyon and the like in FFVIIR Rebirth and quite a few field maps could've been cut down a bit more as a good portion of them have nothing going on in them...yeah it's nice to have something big but most players won't be scouring every inch of the world and if that's inflating the budget it should probably get scaled back so that if sales don't meet expectations or expectations are ridiculously high such as 5 million for a jrpg (which lets be honest, outside of FF and Kingdom Hearts most story heavy rpgs with good stories (so not counting Pokemon due to that last requirement cause let's be honest: people don't play Pokemon for stories) almost no other jrpg series with the classical jrpg narrative design (focus on a main story rather than open world with a fairly short main story and then most of it being focused on side quests/storylines you mainly see in wrpgs' narrative design philosophy) at best sell around 1 million copies for the majority of jrpgs (still a lot better than the PS2 era where most jrpgs struggled to get to 100K to 200K and I'm including Persona and Atelier in that list of games) and the few mid to big sized ones like say Namco's Tales, SE's Dragon Quest or modern Persona may make about 2 to 3 million copies sold and even FF's looking like it's numbers have lowered due to either more fans getting out of the series due to not liking some things they do or stopping gaming altogether so while their sales ceiling in release year may be around 5 Million I'd say the realistic sales expectation should be around 3 million max and they should be aiming for a budget even smaller than that, say a budget expecting 2 million sales in mind at the end of the day or a bit less just in case the future FF game (or other games) sells less than expected).

      I was having a lot of fun just hanging around, picking monster bounties, taking photos, fishing, taking an evil empire soldiers here and there and just plain chilling with the boys.
      If they didn't try to go the full interconnected media with movies, audio drama, animated series and the such and just focused on a neat self contained story, the game would have been much better.

    I know this is explicitly about the main story but I have to throw in Fallout 4 into the mix. Like sure, there is a completed story in there if you go with the brotherhood, but everything feels half baked. The only thing they got right was the gun play, but they left major characters and even major factions out to dry. Preston Garvey is a fantastic example, like who the hell thought any of his implementation was a good idea and they ruined what would otherwise be a fantastic character.

    I had a friend that warned me that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had an abrupt ending, yet even then, I ended up surprised at how abrupt it was. It feels like the game ends just as it really starts to get going, just as it's about to reveal the major antagonist behind everything. They told everything they needed to with how the Dutch gang formed, what John’s role was, and Arthur who served an important role in his development. The remainder was then resolved in the epilogue taking control of John, and what leads to the events of the first Red Dead (how the agency tracks down Marston). Much as I can criticize rockstar, and believe me I can say plenty (they can take their shark cards and shove em up their ass), they can clearly deliver with the right passion and team.

    I’d put Splinter Cell Blacklist… yes Sam gets the villain, but it sets up that there’s more of the blacklist… a perfect replayable open dlc opportunity.
    But it didn’t sell well, and Ubisoft had already turned to their open world busy work model.

    • @Unknown_Genius
      @Unknown_Genius Před 28 dny

      Yup, they realized they make more money with it.
      They also fully destroyed any hopes for proper sales, before open world came the "Copy CoD" phase, SC double Agent came out the same year as R6 Vegas, Double Agent staying true to the original gameplay while Vegas was turning R6 into a more CoD styled game but with tactical elements - needless to say Vegas sold way better than they've seen previous sales go - so they wanted to "modernize" SC with Conviction, which not only split the community but also overall destroy their sales numbers.
      While Blacklist was by far better than Conviction they already lost a good chunk of their playerbase and at the same time it wasn't exactly going back far enough in terms of gameplay to be unique enough to stick out of the general pool of games. And with them canceling a VR Splinter Cell not too long ago (and apparently currently working on a remake of the first game or something along the lines) I don't really know if they even realize why people played their game, it seems like most devs (and especially lead) at Ubisoft just simply don't know what made a good Splinter Cell game at this point anymore - just that they tried to somehow port hanging from a pipe often enough to VR makes me worried about any future try with the franchise.

    FF XV is the best definition of turmoil. It seems the budget and focus were all over the place. Amazing graphics, a whole bunch of side quests and features to look out to, insane motion capture to that day, a lot of skins, a HUGE lot of weapons, summons cutscenes, battle techniques (not going into quality merit here; most fans didn't enjoyed it)... And then:
    Dev1: "guys, aren't we forgetting the screenplay, role and all that stuff?"
    Dev2: "I know, but we should really engage with that bonus dungeon that makes no context with the rest of the game... and, of course, that flying car idea that we'll have no time to design properly"

    Legacy Of Kain : It literally ends with Raziel's story finally rounded up, while Kain's story is barely just starting, even though he was in every single video game of the franchise - so that's the perfect 50% completion your video is talking about. Now that Kain has been purified and has received the final form of the Reaver, he can finally save Nosgoth, ... but the series just ends on 'hope'. Raziel's story : 100% completed. Kain's story : Finally beginning (everything that came before was just a prequel that led to the Scion Of Balance beeing ready to 'face the true enemy').

    Charitably, I'd throw Halo 4's Spartan Ops on the list. There was the start of a galaxy-spanning story where you chase Jul 'Mdama around using the Janus Key collecting Forerunner artifacts. Then it got canned (only for Halo 5 to take the can, crush it, and dump it into the nearest rubbish bin with a first-mission cutscene that kills 'Mdama).
    More cynically, you could add Halo 4 (Didact promises the return of the Forerunners, which doesn't really go anywhere), Halo 5 (Master Chief and friends have to stop Evil Cortana from taking over the galaxy, which gets resolved in between 5 and Infinite -- though at least they had "echoes" in Infinite to tell us that story in cutscenes), and Halo Infinite (who are the Endless? Their "10-year" platform had all story DLC plans scrapped).

    According to its creator, Shenmue has 11 chapters and would take 4-5 games to tell the whole story. I played the first one through Game Pass and it was okay. I could see why it was such a hit back in 2000 with what it achieved. When it came to Shenmue II, I didn't make it far. I was sick of the QTEs and said screw it after trying to find the kid in the market like an hour into the game.
    I played a few hours of Final Fantasy XV and I enjoyed it. A Final Fantasy game with the cast of Ouran High School Host Club; Tamaki, Kyoya, Mitsukuni and Mori. But, I kept getting distracted by other games and just never picked it back up. Now it seems like that was for the best.

    Two bonus mentions. One is more well known and the other isn't.
    Call of Duty Ghosts (iykyk) still hasn't gotten a follow up 10+ years after it's release. It's still something that the community talks about to this day that why we haven't had a conclusion to the story.
    The second one is in the zombies mode of Call of Duty Black Ops 4. The mode has 2 stories, Aether and Chaos. The Aether story concluded the 10+ year of the main zombies story, but the chaos story was left on a massive cliffhanger at the end of the game's 2nd DLC. While there IS a radio in the map Shi no Numa in Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies story that the Chaos story exists in the new Dark Aether story, nothing else has came out of this tie-in until no and noone is certain if we will get a follow-up and hopefully reach a conclusion unlike CoD Ghosts.

    I've played FF15 the whole summer back in 2018 it was a ride, maybe thats why i enjoyed it more than others still one of the best dungeons in ARPG games imo, they were claustrophobic and eerie,only game where camping felt like camping plus small details like nice looking food while camping etc..ACTUAL UNIQUE monster design you dont feel like you are fighting same enemies like in God of War , even tho combat was nothing special and "SKILLFULL" it had style at least, the system where during the night you get swarmed by LVL 70 RONIN or TROLL was also nice, ahhhh FISHING, god still the best fishing mini game ever in gaming industry, this game HAD MORE CONTENT then i expected it to...so yeah story kept it chained but even that unfinished mess was still better than 70% of AAA the are coming out nowadays, let that sink in i can bet if people that dropped FF15 back n day came back to it nowadays after all these failed AAA titles, they would enjoy it.

There were huge parts of the plot just missing and you can tell the last half was rushed. It was just a huge mess that was not satisfying at all. XenoGears was a game that was amazing until they were told you have like 2 hours to wrap up the game. There is a huge disjoint from the first half of the game to the second that you can tell that it was rushed. Honestly if there ever was a game that deserves a remake it is XenoGears. This is the perfect game for that. Its a great game that really suffers from not being complete.
