  • Is there more than one universe? In this visually rich, action-packed talk, Brian Greene shows how the unanswered questions of physics (starting with a big one: What caused the Big Bang?) have led to the theory that our own universe is just one of many in the "multiverse."

      nanotech2080 Yeah for sure, it's mind boggling to think about. Not to mention life as we know it is just that as we know it. We have barley even traveled off of our tiny little rock in our tiny speck of a solar system. It might turn out that the "Goldilocks zone" really only applies to our type of life that specifically evolved to adapt to our specific environment. There could be gas based life, non carbon based life, life in the center of frozen planets kept warm by the planets molten core. Life could be a inevitability caused by energy, meaning sun's could even be "alive" just not in a way we currently comprehend. Now this sounds like crazy science fiction and it may be, but the universe just gets stranger the more we discover, and we keep adding pages to the book of science.

    I’ve played with the idea of a multiverse and the idea that if there are infinite universes then there must exist universes identical to each other, and while this is possible, there is also the possibility of infinite universes that aren’t like each other one bit. Let’s look at something as simple as our natural numbers. They go on infinitely in a positive and negative direction however while there are an infinite set of numbers not one value repeats. The odds of finding a number identical to the value of 1 are 0 and that goes for any value.
    And as far as dark energy goes; with our current laws of physics we can’t create nor destroy energy however it can be manipulated. Could there be a way to someday manipulate dark energy and would doing so damage or better the universe we live in?

    "Which means that we are living through a remarkably privileged era. When certain deep truths about the cosmos are still within reach of the human spirit of exploration. It appears that it may not always be that way." This made me so sad, one day these records will most likely be lost, and that hurts my heart. We are probably meaningless in terms of a multiverse, which I think is ok, we just have to accept our role.

    It’s easy to see how the universe is expanding at an increasing rate. We are surrounded by dark matter even here on earth quantum physics proves it. In fact; what we perceive as solid is far from it.
    Between every atom there is space. Inside of every atom the subatomic protons, neutrons, and elections have space between them. Even smaller particles called quarks and leptons have space between them. So considering the density of subatomic particles being suspended then the infinite amount of dark mater is what is pushing the universe apart.

For any universe to start their existence MUST have the perfect explanation and to explain why it also must have the perfect questions. Why the universes are created and what is between universes.

    One thing eludes me. If we have a finite amount of dark energy within our universe, and it is uniformly spread throughout space, that must mean that the concentration of that dark energy is decreasing and so is the jerk of this expansion decreasing with it? If that's the case than it should probably take a lot less time than if it were not to be decreasing. I'm curious as someone that will be studying physics next year and would appreciate someone with more expertise to enlighten me.

    • @Shortstuffjo
      @Shortstuffjo Před 8 lety +16

      I haven't watched the talk yet but I think I can answer what you're trying to ask. The thing that's different about dark energy is that it always has the same density within our universe. Physical matter and energy are diluted into a larger amount of space as it expands, but the density of dark energy stays constant throughout that expansion.
      To make it easy to visualize, say some regular energy and some dark energy are in a fixed amount of space. They both have arbitrary values of 2. If the space they reside in then doubles in size, the regular energy will dilute to a value of 1, but the dark energy will stay at 2. It's like it's the energy of the vacuum of space, and as space expands, dark energy will always be there to fill the gaps to a constant level.
      This also explains why dark energy has taken over and is now accelerating the expansion of the universe, because while matter and energy have been getting more and more diluted over time, dark energy has stayed the same. The universe reached a tipping point where the repulsive force of dark energy became dominant over large scales compared to the attractive forces of all types of matter combined.

    • @ExtergeoDesigns
      @ExtergeoDesigns Před 8 lety +3

      Shortstuffjo Interesting, is this in any way related to why we know of a lot more antimatter than normal matter? Does antimatter react to the expansion of space in the same way that dark energy does.

    • @Shortstuffjo
      @Shortstuffjo Před 8 lety +10

      Antimatter doesn't seem to exist in any real quantity within our universe. Technically, within the confines of physics, there SHOULD have been exactly as much antimatter as there was matter at the beginning of the universe, and they both should have annihilated each other and left us with a matterless universe, but being as we're here right now that obviously didn't happen.
      Most of the scientists who work on that sort of thing think that, for some reason, there was a tiny tiny bit more regular matter than antimatter at the beginning of the universe, and after 99.9999% of all the matter/antimatter in the universe annihilated, the entire universe you see now is the tiny fraction of matter that was left. That must have been one big boom! (when matter and antimatter collide they release more energy per mass than anything in the universe.)
      I have a pet hypothesis that maybe the matter and antimatter at the beginning of the universe didn't actually collide, but instead, due to the inflationary expansion of space,moved away from each other at faster than light speeds. Far, far beyond the furthest reaches of where we can see, maybe there exists an antimatter universe not too different from our own.
      Anyway, that's the leading theory on antimatter and why there isn't much of it. And I also just realized you probably meant dark matter and not antimatter lol. To answer your question if you did mean dark matter, no, it doesn't react to the expansion of space any differently than regular matter does. As dark energy gets even stronger in the distant future, dark matter will serve to hold things like galaxies and galaxy clusters together for longer than normal matter alone would have though. Eventually though, the universe and everything in it will all be ripped apart at the seams and nobody will ever know.

      @aahilmolwani6008 Před 7 lety +1

      Well the fact you presented that dark energy is decreasing is controversial. According to law of conservation, the total energy is always conserved and only changes its form. So if it's changing to other form, what other form it could be? Could it be some other form of energy that's keeping our universe conserved from colliding with other universes?
