- Peter Schmeichel is one of the modern goalkeeping greats. Towering 6’3 and weighing 100 kilograms, he was one of the most intimidating figures to have played the game of football. In a public poll held in 2001 by Reuters which was attended by 200,000 participants, people voted Schmeichel as the greatest goalkeeper ever. They voted Schmeichel ahead of Lev Yashin, who is the only goalkeeper to win the Ballon D’or.
But what qualities as a goalkeeper did Schmeichel have that made people think of him so highly? We’ll take a look at that shortly but before we do, we’d like to let you know that we bring these videos to you for free, And in order to show support to our channel, the least you can do to show support to us is by hitting that subscribe button with the notification bell. Okay, now let’s get into the details of how good Schmeichel was. But before that, let’s take a look at his personal background.
Background
Schmeichel was born in Gladsaxe, Denmark. His mother was a nurse while his father was a Jazz musician. At the age of 8, Schmeichel played his first game for a team in his suburbs known as Hoje Gladsaxe. After remaining unbeaten for 2 years, he moved to a new club BK Hero.

Best keeper I ever saw. Can’t speak about Yashin because I never saw him, but miles better than Buffon, Neuer, Kahn, Casillas, or any other keeper I’ve ever seen.
Not as good as Buffon
I'll second that.
Only keeper in my lifetime where a one on one during a match I favoured the keeper.
@@erikpuka2627 better then Buffon by miles but a lot of his career is from before television really became a thing. Buffon is a legend true but if you ever watched both keepers player by player Schmeichel was an overall Goalkeeper, beside being goalkeeper schmeichel was way better footballer with the ball then Buffon has ever been and took clubs from not winning to winning. Buffon mostly only showed he was good for 2 teams one club and 1 national one. where Schmeichel even made a 1st division team into a winning team.
@@AH-df3rcnot only that . Smeichel was a handball keeper so he he knows how to block shots with both of his feet in the air
Greatest Premier League Keeper of all time 😊.
In 1995, Blackburn were Champions and 2 school friends and I got season tickets for Blackburn. We were under 16 so it was only concessionary prices. All our parents shared turns in taking us to the home games.
When United came to town, they were and have been since I can remember, the team to beat. And for 45 minutes when Schmeichel was in the nets at the Blackburn End, his presence was incredible. He was just big. Huge. 6 foot 4 at least and wide. He was a very well built guy. Think Dolph Lundgren. I knew he was huge when Colin Hendry stood next to him and just about got to chin level. Even Shearer was only six foot.
His presence was huge. All half he barked at his defenders and just swept the ball up on the rare occasion Rovers made a chance. He was a titan. All 3 of us were just staring in disbelief at the sheer size and presence of him. We had seen some decent goalkeepers but this was the best in the world. He looked the part.
Another interesting fact not touched upon is that apart from 1999 and everything he did for United, arguably his greatest achievement was for Denmark in 1992. He was a huge part of that tournament win. Seems to go unnoticed but it’s a big part of his career.
Schmeichel was nuts he even participated in corners and score goals 😆
Best I’ve ever seen , his overall sheer presence was daunting for most forwards
As an LFC fan, PS was the best of the BEST. Him and Cantona singlehandedly won MAN UTD titles and cups. Simply fantastic !!
unbelievably good...arguably the best ever. deffo in that conversation
Why is there a random picture of Ståle Solbakken at 6:44?
Even as a Chelsea fan, I've gotten into arguments on social media with other Chelsea fans and been called all kinds of names by the ones who are upset that I would dare say that Schmeichel is the greatest goalkeeper to have ever played in the EPL and not Petr Cech. Fuck 'em!
The best goalkeeper ever!
But why do you post a picture of Norwegian guy Ståle Solbakken at 6:45?? 🤔
As difficult as it is to gauge these kinds of things, I do believe that it wouldn't be undeserved for Schmeichel to be proclaimed the greatest football goalkeeper of all time. In my personal book, he holds this title. :-)
Damn he won every award and trophy there was except the world cup
the best ever , responsibe for alot of uniteds success , and responsibe for newcastle united never winning league 9596 . Most times he was not in side united the team was not as strong ,
Greatest ever ❤️
This channel is too underrated
Channel is horrible. The landscape at 1:12 and picture of Ståle Solbakken at 6:44 has nothing to do with Denmark or Schmeichel
Yes yes he does
Fun fact: He started as a striker in his youth career.
the best
I really dont get these videos where stuff is narrated that has absolutely nothing to do with the images shown.
The Best of the Best
he is the best goalkeeper ever
Yes
yes.
Best ever unless yashin was better which i doubt
Van der Saar was better
It’s very close. He was absolutely astonishing. United fans just have a deep love for Schmeichel and his style and his honesty. Van Der Sar joined us when he was 33/34 or so. Schmeichel was mid 20’s.
You’re right though Van Der Sar was awesome and a great career. He was part of an amazing United defence and we had a great European team/squad when he was there. The 2008 team was European defensive. The 1999 team was different.
Van Der Saar definitely solved our goalkeeping issues that we had for 2 years after Schmeichel left. Bosnich and Taibi were very disappointing.
At what..?
number 1 of all time, he didn't have a weakness
