  • Here we help you with our guide on How To Back Up Your Windows 10 Files to an External Hard Drive. There are many ways that you could do this by using online tools or some paid for pieces of software. But there is an easier way built into Windows which is free that we will show you setup step-by-step.
All you will need is an External Hard Drive. Here is a list on a few that we suggest. A simple guide would be to choose an External Hard Drive which is bigger than the drive in your computer.

Thank you so much, I checked several videos and I almost gave up and decided to return the WD 14T external hard drive. I am so happy I found your channel. I haven't done the backup yet, because the cable didn't come with the package to connect it to the computer, and the slot to plug in the hard drive is different from what I Knew so far. I may have to take the hard drive to a computer store to buy the cable, but I don't think I will have a problem doing it. I wish you showed us when you back up your files. You have the gift or the talent to teach.

Great video, clear and concise! My laptop has both an SSD drive (C) and a regular drive (D). With the method you described, does the process back up both of these drives or do you need to do another process? Also, if I were delete all the individual files within Pictures to make room on my D drive, would the back up version also delete those files from the backup as it updates? Thanks

Hands down the best explanation on here. I do have a question though... Every step I was able to follow, except for the manual backup. When I click 'Back up now', I get the loading circle and 'backing up your data', but that lasts only for five seconds before it stops. It says that the backup has been done, but the data file is empty. There is more than enough free space, so that shouldn't be an issue... Is the backup not working because I already have some files saved on the drive?

Excellent explanation. Thank you. What difference would it make if, like me, you never save work to C: drive but always save to an external drive as a matter of course, and it is that external drive you want to back up to another external drive? I can't see an option to save from a specific drive.

I hope you are answering questions. My computer has a very small hard drive that is now in the red zone. I like the idea of a hard drive and backing up all my files. Thank you for clearly explaining that. Now once I have my files backed up can I just add new files to the folders in the external drive instead of having them in both places since I don't have much storage left on my computer hard drive? Or can I delete a copy of big folders I have and just keep them in the external drive, to free up space in my computer hard drive? Hope those questions make sense.

Great video and one of few that answer the questions in comments.. thanks for that... I have a few myself if you could, as i have always had problems getting my head around backups.
    1. Before backing up my laptop to portable drive i just bought, is there an easy quick way to delete all duplicate files.. every time i have added programs to try this.. It's a one by one lengthy process which i still arnt sure of so i don't try.
    2. re ONEDRIVE.(another nightmare for me), is there a way i can backup all my onedrive folders/files onto a section of the portable harddrive by itself.. like make a folder on the portable hardrive just for onedrive?
    3. I want to backup my full 1TB laptop to the portable drive, but because its so full and slowing the laptop down, i only want to put back on certain folders/files plus the onedrive.. i don't want to clutter up.. What i ideally want to do is start with my laptop being formatted and empty again.. and from the backup just pull across the folders i like..... Is that as easy as it sounds.. can i just go into my new backup drive and drag or copy somehow just the things i need.
    4. What about things like my favourites on my browsers.. how do i go about not losing those... and is there anything else that isn't folders/files that i need to think about ( i know i have to back my emails up etc).
Sorry about all the questions appreciate if you could give me some advice.. cheers

That's a very clear tutorial, one question just to be sure: If backup files are deleted after 1 year, what happens with files on the computer that have not been opened or edited for more that 1 year period? I assume the latest copy on the computer remains abcked up? The back up will keep the latest copy irrespective of how long since it was opened or edited?
I ask because I have many files that I need to keep but will not be modifying or may not open in any 1 year period.
    Thanks

Yes absolutely correct. The backup will retain the latest version of any file so if it hasn't been opened/altered for a year or more, it will simply keep a copy of the original file. If for any reason, the BACKUP version of that file is deleted, it would simply take another copy of the file from the computer when the scheduled backup runs again.

How do you deal with the external drive's software wanting to run your backup settings? How do you switch from say Seagate Toolkit to Windows backup?

Thanks so much for your 'well presented details' on 'How to Complete Backups'😊 I'm preparing to 'swap/upgrade computers' and want to be able to 'Restore Files' onto 'New Computer', etc...

Does it back up programs and apps too, or do you have to select them?

Thank you! One point not clear to me here is whether this is also a SYNC - so if I have deleted on my laptop and never want to see it again, will it also disapprear from the back-up drive when I run this procedure. Thx again.

Excellent tutorial of backing up my files. I chose to back up the entire pc to my 8TB HDD. I did this because I just got a new computer and would like to transfer all my files from my 15year old computer to my new one. I reviewed your video on how to restore files on the same computer, excellent video as well. But how would I restore them to a brand new computer. Would you have a tutorial for that? You are so good at this. I am 76 years young. And I love the time you invest in demonstrating each action. I hope there is a video available. Or maybe a simple response would do it. Much thanks.

If the external drive has other stuff on it does windows put the back up inside single master folder? or is everything loose folders?

What happens if you plug out the wire after it's done, it saves right? And also what happens if I only want to back it up once?

When I click on Add Drive in the Backup window, I select my available drive, but then nothing changes on the Backup window. There is no "Automatically back up my files" toggle option that appears.

When using Win 10 Backup, what happens when a file is moved to another folder or a folder name is changed? Does the Backup delete the old files or folder? I.e. Does Backup leave moved files with the same name in the old folder as well as the new folder? Not a good idea.
    Wouldn't Mirroring eliminate this problem?
