With so much craziness happening in this country, I made the decision, to attempt to become a police officer here in Texas. It's not just for a paycheck, but for the honor in it. I don't want to be a police officer just to arrest people, and write tickets. I want to actually help people in the choices they make. I promise to respect people as human beings, and not treat them all like convicts or felons.

Right on, Frankie! I met some really nice officers while I volunteered in the Community Services of the Oakland Police Department. Wonderful people, doing a very hard job. They really keep mum about the truly bad stuff they face every day.

I know I am late in saying this but congrats to the 172nd academy class for making it and to all others who are with the Oakland police department! This was very inspiring and hopefully I’ll be joining the ranks soon.

I am so very proud of them. The Oakland Police Department's Community Services Division was tremendously helpful in supporting our crime prevention Resource and Support Council (1985-1986), as well as the Oakland/Lamorinda Toy Campaign, Inc. (1987-1999) in providing staff and officer services. The officers voluntarily showed up in late November, without fail, to wrap toys. One day I walked in and they were wearing black armbands (officer killed). Just touching. Marvelous video. Didn't realize how rigorous was the training. Impressive!
Cessaly, Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I went through the O.P.D. Academy in 1987-88. Law enforcement was a rewarding experience but sometimes it could be a very lonely and thankless job. Citizens like you made it worthwhile.

If u want to be a real cop Oakland is the place for you , fast paced, more violent crime then most cities, if u want to write tickets pull dead bodies out of crashes, join the CHP...the 2 could not be more different....

Azazel that's stupid, you should never get degree in criminal justice if you going for police, what you should do is get degree in anything else but criminal justice that's what they actually recommend because if you get shot and become incapable of performing street service you then have accounting degree let's say and you can still work and not sit at home because now you have no job. Do your research I did mine

critic also counts. all feedback should be use for improvement of safety for all persons. what some one said a long time ago in quote "it is not the critic who counts..." (0:05), possibly isn't working in partnership with the community. "the credit belongs to the man in the arena" stated was possibly he was referring to himself. the reality of the community safety is that we all work to provide public safety in all levels and all participations from feedbacks to those who call the department on incidents, and much more. the best safest communities are always the ones who value all persons.

I'm a correctional officer. I want to do the crossover training to be a cop, but our 7pm- 7am schedule makes it near impossible to do the training on our own time. I'm really considering quitting so i can focus on the academy.

Going into the academy do you need to know how to fight or can you go in with little to non experience and then get taught how to fight from the beginning?
The academy would be much easier if you are an athlete. You have to prepare physically at least six months or more. You have to practice to run at least 5 miles daily. Otherwise, your drill instructors would be on you all the time trying to catch up. They don't teach you enough defense skills in less than six months, martial arts experiences would definitely help you on the street. Also, shooting skill would also help. Remember, there is a war out there and you couldn't always depend on others. There are lots of tall, big bad guys that wanted to hurt you, and you have to constantly prepare. Most nice cop die first.
It’s not harder then the marine corps training trust me and it’s not a requirement.
If you have really poor eyesight can you still become a patrolman?

You guys are lucky on the oc spray. One eye covered, running water, and shitty push ups. Man we had 5 seconds to wash our face in a bucket after getting sprayed with both eyes wide open.

Its different everywhere. Call your police department or if you happen to see a police officer some where stop and ask. I know for my local sheriff department you have to take a pellet be test (all departments), a physical (all departments) and a background ( all departments). If you get into the academy you basically go through everything you need to know. Police codes, traffic stop and pursuit training, many scenarios, and so much more. But after a 24 + weeks of academy time you then become a police officer. But trust me once you become a police officer you will love it. I want to be a sheriff deputy and that is because I know that here in my county we get 1,000,000 calls a year or 83,000 calls a month. But thats because my county has more than 1,800,000 people. Also because I know there are people who need help and trst us to solve there problems. So why not be there? But yeah call your local police department and ask. Also ask for a ride along with the officer.

I hope you don't think all police do is give tickets? I mean yeah they can and will pull people over but that's only 1% of there job. I am also a teen but want to work my my sheriff department. police take all type of calls from fights, domestic violence , kidnapping, shots fired, home invasion, trespassing and anything you can think of. I am not meaning to ruin your plan for FBI but when people call 911 the police, sheriff, and highway patrol come to help. I guess FBI deals with mostly federal stuff and not local. I want to be a law enforcement tho because hundreds of thousands if not millions of people call 911 everyday, and most of the time they call because they are at the worst time of there life. so why not be there too help them? think about it.

You got time but its always ok to be sure early. Me being 26 I feel that time is against me because although I'm almost done at a community college in which i am majoring in criminal justice. I am looking to transfer but I been having second thoughts about it. I also been having second thoughts on joining the military also but I'm 26 and technically I should already be in the academy.or it least a few years in the armed forces. I am looking to get into law enforcement as well.

You are required to be tasered and maced in a police academy, mainly because you can easily lose your stuff to someone, and get turned on.
the exact same with OC spray, you are purposely tased and sprayed so that you know personally what it feels like, and will help you make a further judgmental decision on whether or not its necessary or not.
