Product Spotlight: Bravo Company Mk 2 Recoil Mitigation System

  • Some folks are more sensitive to recoil than others, but as a general rule, it's a Good Thing when you can reduce a rifle's felt recoil. That's exactly what Bravo Company Mk 2 Recoil Mitigation System does for the AR-15. Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant is here to explain how it works. Consisting of a recoil buffer, buffer spring, receiver extension (aka, "buffer tube"), castle nut, and end plate with a handy QD sling swivel socket, the RMS is Bravo Company's take on the A5 buffer system. Both recoil systems occupy the middle ground between rifle and carbine systems. So the Bravo RMS / A5 buffers are longer than carbine buffers but decidedly shorter than rifle buffers. The recoil springs are stronger, too. The buffer tube is longer to accommodate the longer buffer, but the tube accepts any collapsible (adjustable) stock that fits a standard mil-spec (1.146" O.D.) carbine buffer tube.
BENEFIT #1: The big benefit of BCM's Recoil Mitigation System is making your rifle a LOT smoother shooting because the extra length spreads out the recoil impulse. "But wait," you ask, "how bad is the recoil on a .223 rifle?" Well, there is still some recoil, and mitigating it enables you to make faster follow-up shots. You can watch the bullet hit (or miss!) the target through your optic. That's pretty important when you're in a timed competition, yes?
BENEFIT #2: The RMS also makes your rifle more RELIABLE, regardless of its gas system length. The recoil spring's extra oomph coupled with the heavier buffer means more weight driving the carrier forward to ensure that next round gets chambered. You enjoy awesomely reliable feeding, while the extra weight and receiver extension length mean gentler felt recoil.

A former neighbor of mine bought a DPMS LR-308 at an estate sale and asked me to come shooting with him. That thing kicked like a mule and wasn't reliable at all. I felt bad for him, because he was so excited for his new purchase and all I could really do was recommend an A5 buffer tube and an AR15-length H3 buffer. That combo made his gun cycle correctly and it cut the recoil dramatically. I know that's not really how the A5 is normally used, but I was really impressed with how adding a heavier buffer smoothed out recoil for his rifle.

As you mentioned Mike's video on the A5 system he says the reason why you would want to have the weights in the buffer shake/rattle is so that when the bolt closes the fwd mass of the weights slaps the "bouncing bolt" back into battery. However this is one difference I've noticed about the BCM buffers...they don't rattle. Idk what or which is better but that's a difference I have seen.

I haven't seen it for a while for some reason but 10 years ago when I started using the a5 system there was a fantastic super slow speed video that showed a carbine and an a5 rifle simultaneously and you could totally see the difference in bounce. The carbine was crazy sloppy compared to the a5 which just went into battery and stopped.
A carbine buffer system does fine and has worked well for many many years but it's kinda like the difference between an a2 forearm vs a free float rail; it just helps the rifle act more natural and makes it objectively more solid, reliable, repeatable, and consistent

The Bravo MK2 buffer system uses a slightly longer buffer tube and an A2 M-16 spring which is longer and tighter to compress than the standard carbine spring , The T2 buffer weight is 5.6 ounces and the T2 buffer weight length is in-between a standard carbine and a rifle length buffer. The idea of the Bravo system is to reduce recoil due to the slight BCG lag between going into battery and the next round firing. If I get the T2 system and see it under gassed I will replace a steel weight with a aluminum buffer weight. I really don't want to be over gassed as it breaks extractors in AR platforms for 7.62 x 39 using steel cased ammo. @@ErickaC-mc7vg

It is an easy job with the right tools. I WOULD NOT recommend attempting it without an armorer's wrench and a vise. You will need to break the staking (assuming it is staked) to remove your existing receiver extension (aka buffer tube) and torque the castle nut to iirc 38-42 ft/lbs when you install the new receiver extension. Not going to say it is impossible but it should really be done with the proper tools.
