Anyone who served in the military knows how hard it was to re-adjust to living as a civilian again. Most civilians are not easy to get along with, for Veterans. I live near Amish farms and families. Their ways are odd to me; but, I treat them with respect and go out of my way not to upset any of them. When I needed a new roof, I hired an Amish crew to do the job. The cost was agreed on; and, the new metal roof was installed in one day. They don't waste any time or materials; and, they cleaned up everything before they left. You have to treat other people with respect (even those who are very different from you). Feral people have rights also. Many of them have their reasons for living where they are. Thank you for this story. There are two good lessons to be learned from this video. Treat other people with respect; and, don't mess around (walk, run, ride, hunt, play, dump, or party) on other peoples property.

There were “feral people “ that I knew of in our Eastern KY hills too. 3 brothers ( All in the 50s maybe)that all lived on a ridge with no other people. No road access to their makeshift home. Deep into the woods. They were raised to be recluses, as their parents were the same way and had died off. They made 1 monthly trip into our local town for groceries and supplies each month. They would walk the mile down the mountain to the closest neighbor , and he would give them a ride to town. They were very strange acting but polite and cordial. They would buy their supplies (mainly coffee , kerosene and other things they couldn’t produce themselves. They would bring them back and load them up on a mule and buggy and take them back up the mountain. Rumors were that they all had never been to school or public places and got government checks. Idk that for sure though. They stayed to themselves and never bothered anyone.

I'm new here, I just subbed (47,400k subs) I peeked at some of your videos, I honestly can't wait to binge watch! A little about me, I'm a 54 yr old disabled woman from NC who has FSHD2 Muscular Dystrophy so my hiking & exploring days were over when I lost my ability to walk. When I was younger I loved hiking (a lot of heavy bushwhacking) thru the Appalachian Mountains. I didnt get to check out the Blue Ridge mountains as much as I'd like to bc I was addicted to Appy. I still have family up on those mountains in nc! One great aunt & uncles property span from nc and carries over the border into Eastern TN. (Rains' and Johnsons) Thank you for sharing all your stories/research, etc with all of us! It means the world to me, to tell these stories keeping them in the light. I appreciate all the time, energy, and effort you put into this channel as well as keeping the history alive...Much Love and respect from a lil ole lady from central NC!

Hi Jared! Much thanks to Daniel Rigsby for sharing his family's story with you to tell. I believe as he does, that most feral mountain people don't want to cause trouble and will leave you alone if you simply don't hassle them and let them exist. I suppose, however, that that's no more completely true there than it is on any large city street! But I will take the mountains over the large city any day of the week and twice on Sunday! There's good, bad, and the unexplained in both, but if your good to life in the mountains, they'll be good to you! Not so sure about the city anymore.
Y'all take care now! May God bless you and yours. 😊

Back in the sixties when I was a child we lived in a holler it forked off and another holler on the left side was about mile and half long nobody lived up it but my daddy hunted it a lot he saw a wild man many times he said I was about seven years old and my mommy and a few of my sisters and brothers ( there was fifteen of us kids ) would walk up in there a lot we had a few gardens up in there so we were in there a lot but one day we were about half way up and here came a man he ran across the road in front of us he was so fast he had long strangy hair a beard and overalls on I don’t think I saw his feet it scared us every one and through the years after I grew up daddy said he would see him ever now and then one night we heard gunshots pow fast firing when they stopped we ran to see what happened and my dad was standing there with his pistol in his hand said that the wild man was looking through the window and he slept with his pistol beside him he said he saw him looking in the window and eased his hand on his gun and fired from where it was laying beside him in the bed the window he shot out was over six feet off the ground and saw him one night around Christmas we a were just hanging out a bunch of us at mommy’s I was standing in front of the gas heater talking and turned around and there he was looking through the window on the porch I screamed and every body ran out side but he got away our chickens would get gone a lot
We didn’t think nothing of it it just excited us I guess we were just as strange as he was to us lol but I can still see him when I think about it it’s my memory daddy told us not to bother him that he might be somebody that was in the war

Well most folks think that when the national parks and everything was first starting up these people didn't want to sell their lands so they retreated back into the mountains away from society and after so long became feral. Thank you so much for watching. God bless and have a good'n

Papaw - Grandfather, Memaw - Grandmother.
To further complicate things, one may find them...way down yonder in the paw paw patch.

A "papaw" is an Appalachian word from your "mammy" or "pappy's" "pappy"! His wife is called "mamaw."
