What a tale, Donnie, filled with love and tragedy. My great-great-great grandmother was Cherokee. When the government was forcing the Cherokees to go on the Trail of Tears, she escaped to south Georgia and married a white man. She stayed with him until the youngest child was grown, then she disappeared. Noone knows where she went or what happened to her. Things might have been different, had everyone treated the Natives with the love and respect Joe and his father had for them. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story, Donnie. God bless.🙏❤️

Tallapoosa Georgia was the Native ceremonial town ..My great grandfather married full blooded Cherokee woman and lived in Tallapoosa owning a Pecan plantation.

So explain to me what they're learning when they go to school they don't know cursive so how are they supposed to sign papers. Kids today aren't being taught about things that happened already like 9/11, Waco, or the Oklahoma City Bombing. So you mean to tell me that they're teaching all that? What a beautiful but sad story Donnie! Old Joe was like my Scottish ancestors who wandered into northeastern Georgia and wound up being taken in by a Cherokee farming settlement that became a tiny little town that's still barely there now in middle-of-nowhere Georgia. But when you said that his wife and child died, I knew what was coming next. Joe may have heard that the army were coming for his Cherokee tribe and knew he couldn't stop them, so he left, ashamed of his ties to the whites and in shock that such a thing could happen and he was powerless to stop it. But more than likely, he went out hunting one day, maybe deeper into the mountains than usual and got severely injured, too injured to make it home and too far away for people to look for him. Many of our brave frontiersmen ended this way but they died in the land they loved doing the things they loved to do. I try my best to honor them as I know they were the start of what I have now. I enjoyed learning about mountain Joe. My daddy knew a lot about nature and plants, one day he took me with him to hunt for ginseng, after he showed me what to look for I found as many plants as he did that day. Watching this video reminded of a cherished memory I spent with my daddy.

Great story Donnie!!!!! I gotta great great grandfather who was half Cherokee and fought with Thomas Legion in North Carolina guarding the Cumberland gap during the civil war. From what I could find out, he was from Jefferson county Tennessee. I still got his single shot horse pistol. Keep the videos comin’ thank you

My great great great grandfather had a good repore with the Piute Indians in the Salt Lake Valley in Utah.
His wife would feed the Indians when they would come around.

Thanks so much Donnie for another great story from our history. I've always thought that the Trail of Tears was so heartbreaking and wrong. What all the eastern tribes went though so greedy men could take their land and make money off their misery. I'm so glad that some of the Cherokee, Seminole and other tribes hid and remained on the land they loved and fought for. President Andrew Jackson was in office and Ive never liked him for that. But thank God for men like Davey Crockett who stood against him. Jackson was also the territorial governor of Florida. Where I live they have a springtime celebration in which he's the figure head of it. At the parade when the man playing him rides by on his horse there's Native Americans following beside him on the sidewalk carrying their flag and signs in protest and shouting.

Really loving all these stories you are presenting here brother! The early Appalachian settlers are really interesting. They were especially tough and resilient people that had to go through some real hardships to get established. Within my own lineage, my 6th great grandpaw was born in Virginia about 1720. After his first wife died in the mid-1750's, he moved to North Carolina and served in the militia during the French and Indian War. He married a young woman from the Catawba tribe and settled in the upper piedmont county of Rowan in the mid-1760's at the end of the war. His son(my 5th great grandpaw) was in the Revolutionary War and was an early settler in Old Buncombe County, NC a few years after the war.

After a week out of the country it is lovely to be back and listen to your voice. What an amazing story of such tenacity and resilience these people displayed. You can't begin to imagine what it was like, what hardships they must have endured. The boat trip to America would have been appalling to start with then having to live in the most primitive conditions doesn't bare thinking about. I have heard of the trail of tears and keep promising myself I will read up about it. As you say it was a disgrace to treat these indigenous people to this. White man has a lot to be ashamed of. I am English and we don't cover ourselves in glory either. I am now going to catch up on your trail cams and see if Dirty Dan is about.

Thank you Donnie ,this story lines up with my ancestors of the Cherokee nation they lived in this area along the same time my grandfather fourth removed a member of the Cherokee nation and Grand Chief may have helped or known Joe my grandfather was born 1760 in the traditional lands of no Carolina ,buried in Sharp mountain Georgia near the state line at ball MTN cemetery in 1835 he was full blooded Cherokee,along with my grandmother she preceded him in death by 25 years I love listening to these stories my mind can see all the characters in these tales and think to myself my grandfather and grandmother could very well been a part of your story ,thank you

You’re storytelling is amazing and a thing most people can’t do. I love your videos, the histories and how people lived and survived. I really appreciate you taking the time to put all these on video so they will be around forever. I remember some of the things from my Mother telling me stories. I was born in 1965 and I remember an old neighborhood store we used to walk to when I was in kindergarten. I can’t remember but can imagine it being an old general store from years ago. Mom used to buy bologna where they sliced it for you. I miss really thick sliced bologna sandwiches! My how things have changed. Our family has 445 acres in the Eastatoee Valley. I have learned so much that's been passed down through the families in the area, like how to make snake weed tea. Mountain medicine is a lost art it seems like. We've tried to preserve everything that we can. Every year we till the gardens, we find Indian relics (trail of tears literally came through the land the old family cabin is on). We've donated the majority of relics to the historical society in hopes it will be well preserved. Three family members still live on the acreage and have trusts to ensure none of the property is divided up or sold. So much around us in the valley has been sold out for development and it brings tears to my eyes.

Great story Don. It reminds me so much of a man i was fortune enough to meet after leaving a big city and moving into the mountains. He lived this type of life like Joe and taught me almost everything i know about mountain survival. He lived off the land,made wine, grew his own food and i just about anything you can think of. The stories he told me and places he took me is something i treasure. Hopefully some day ill be able to pass my experiences along to someone who'll treasure and share them aswell.
