@@sammillar3881 why do you still have so much bitterness in your heart? Among other groups, what did middle class Catholics ever do to you personally? Most likely nothing, it’s just an oul ideological, irrational, unfounded hatred you have for them.
"I have more in common with a working class loyalist than with a middle class Catholic" - Easily the best quote about The Troubles I've heard, many were just disposable
It’s a class war
My grandfather was killed in McGurks bar and the family have and still are fighting for the truth. The ripple effect was to consolidate the families rage against the British Government. I grew up in the 70's was 13 during the hunger strikes, I laugh at soldiers having done a "tour" in NI which was 6mths and went home to a "normal" life and had PTSD, I say THIS WAS MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD
I’m so sorry for your loss. I believe Mi5 will never let any of their secrets of atrocities in all their colonies come to light.

I just paused the video and reflected on my short time, my "snapshot" in an American jail & then acknowledged he did 8 years in the various circles of hell & you can tell from how clear and concise and genuine he is that the British tried they're hardest to break this lad and he remains intact, my dad was a staunch republican, born in Ireland but spent his adult life in the USA and he would tell me about people like Bobby Sands and watching this man's recollection of events it honestly gave me chills, if you can't respect this man's strength, determination and courage (even if you firmly disagree with his stance) then there is something missing in your human foundation and you should do some soul searching, this man is the personification of human determination and the will to go on, I hope I can have 1/1000th his strength and fortitude in my life and the struggles and trials and tribulations that I will inevitably face

So here’s a thing, having just returned from my first tour of Belfast and all the tourist spots of the political divide ( on both sides ) and without disclosing my back ground or beliefs as it would offer no purpose to my comment…..I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, this interview and testimony by Sam Millar is the single most informative and in my opinion, honest, piece I have ever heard concerning the troubles by someone involved. It’s fearless, brave, heartbreaking and mind blowing all rolled into one. Quite stunning. Sam, I fully tip my hat to you for your bravery and courage in the face of such dire consequences and I salute you as an inspiration.Your honesty has removed many of the so called truths I have carried on this subject which have been constantly peddled by media and other outlets that have been pushed over the years. May you and your testimony continue to reach people and educate new generations in the hope that more of us will choose the pen over the sword.God bless you.

100% one of your best interviews what a guy
I’m English /British, I’ve great grandparents from Ireland all catholic, yet my family are not religious. I grew up in the 70s 80s, hating the IRA, but over the years I’ve realised that if I was Irish catholic I would’ve chose the same path as Sam millar. The oppressed have a much better cause to fight for the rights of equality. Respect to any person and people fighting for change against the system, I see things so different now, and during this plandemic I realise I/we/ all of us together cannot trust the government, the BBC,the media suppression, podcasts like this give a real uncensored view of all things that the average person is oblivious too. Good luck Sam and best wishes.
I’ve thought this recently, and it’s so sad that someone’s life and viewpoint can be completely different based on being born only a few streets away from someone else
spot on mate respect to you
Boy George was an English guy and his family was in the ra! True bill
Respect to you mate and it's great now that the internet provides people with instant uncensored news that the government can't control...don't forget it was only in the 90s that the British government were censoring Irish republican political leaders and getting actors to dub over their voices to gag their influence...

The misunderstanding is illustrated by the widespread use of the word Fenian as an insult (or compliment, depending on your perspective). It's broadly used as a pejorative meaning Catholic, when in fact the Fenians were both Catholic and Protestant, whose common aim was Irish nationalism. This was lost via propaganda and segregation.

That was one of the best interviews I've seen in a long time, hats off James, letting him talk. You're a good listener too!
This is an elite interview. Not just for the topics covered but for the professionalism. Minimal questions and letting the guest speak freely.
Sam, my family grew up at the Shankill rd / Falls rd Peaceline just off Percy street where the first gun battle between Loyalist and Republican gunmen took place. My family were Protestant and we were poor. An outside toilet with no hot water. My family had no riches, no fancy houses. We were in the same boat.
That's true in the working class ghettos of the north but the more upper class unionist people in northern Ireland ruled the roost in government and selected who had jobs and housing.....while the working class communities on both sides suffered...I'd say more so the nationalist community in that they couldn't get jobs as handy and no real future
The Common denominator was the Wealthy Privileged Unionists and the Elites in Westminster.
Poor People on each side, always pay the price for their Aims to stay Wealthy and in Power, even to this very day.
Education is Key!
Did you not hear him say he has more in common with a working class protestant then a middle class Catholic? The poor had it tough no matter their religion, only difference was protestant weren't tortured in prison and discriminated on the outside.
My father was a blanket man. The stories he tells would break your heart but these men could never be broken. They fought for the cause! Spot on with the shinners too Sam. Sold their souls to the Brits.

Superb James! Your best yet. I listened to it last night and I am still thinking about it today. I was absolutely enthralled for 2 hours. What an interview, what a story, what an adventure, what humility and finally what understanding. The line about Unionists in a UI: "I would be one of the first to go and fight for them if I thought they were not being treat equally," shreds the bitter sectarian BS and exposes the reality of who really benefits from its continuance.
