  • In this episode of ‘Minutes With’, we sat down with Themba Cabeka, a man who flew from South Africa to London by hiding in the wheel of a plane.
    Themba takes us through his life living on the streets in South Africa and how he, and his friend Carlito, came up with a plan to fly to the UK.
    On the flight Themba and Carlito hid in the plane's undercarriage. Eventually they passed out due to lack of oxygen as temperatures in the undercarriage reached -60 degrees celsius.
    We also spoke to Themba's friend, Gabriel Frood, who has been helping Themba get back on his feet in his new home in Liverpool.

That is the current reality, he's still here so clearly it wasn't. Now whether or not his time was preordained by some higher power or destiny is another conversation entirely. I think that our existence is indescriminate and chaotic and the unfortunate reality is some of us are "lucky" and avoid juvenile cancers and the like while. Saying it is or isn't someone's time to go is a rather clichéd statement but is based in people's interpretations of each of our inherent luck. Simply put life isn't fair, but stating scenarios of unlucky in this context is just unecessary in my opinion. Hence why I thought it was a bad take. Free speech and discourse such as this is important however.

    • @JET7C0
      @JET7C0 Před 3 lety +1

      @@wienix11 So basically, again, kids who are perfectly innocent and good, get brain tumors, get shot in gang warfare crossfires, die in slums, etc. - if there's a "higher power" that decides to subject people to arbitrary and immense suffering, not only do they suck, but we're basically living under a horrific, despotic, spiritual regime if true.
      Instead, I think it's healthier to realize we are all subject to unforeseen circumstances, external to ourselves, that have no relationship to our internal moral character, our worth, or certainly our future potential, and in that way we can try to help each other through and work to prevent these arbitrary and wholly external tragedies, like say, earthquakes, or cancer, or per the video above: work toward a world where people can realize their potential without having to be a stowaway in a nearly certainly lethal circumstance, without suggesting instead, when one predictably dies, and another survives by the luck of where they placed themselves, that this was meant to be, because they had something to show the world the deceased friend didn't.
      On a more personal level, my dad died of cancer when I was 7, and he in his early 30s - he was a good man, dad, and on a very promising track in his life, where many of his colleagues made a name for themselves and positive contributions to the world - do I think or believe he suffered horribly and ultimately died from cancer, all the while agonizing over leaving his young children behind, because he didn't have something "significant to show the world" as opposed to his colleagues who survived. No, I don't. While the original commenter's heart I don't doubt was in the right place, this is literally the implication of their statement.

    His name means Hope in IsiZulu. There's a saying that says "ithemba alilahlwa", meaning one should never lose hope. His name says it all. What else can drive a man to do this except for hoping for greener pastures on the other side. With everything that is going on in SA, I'm happy that he made it there alive. I wish him nothing but the best. As for Gabriel, thank you so much for taking care of one of our brothers. One may underestimate the level of poverty most people suffer from in SA because it is hidden by lovely buildings and educated people who are suffering themselves! For the mere fact that we have people who are on streets with qualifications says a lot about our country. Let me not say more!
