A DEADLY PLAN That Resulted In An Ocean Crash | November Disasters | Mayday: Air Disaster

  • When Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 departed from Addis Ababa on November 23, 1996, it was carrying 163 passengers and 12 crew members. Among them were an American diplomat, a legendary news cameraman, and a deadly plan.
Are you able to figure out what the cause of this crash was?
From Season 3 Episode 13 "Ocean Landing": Twenty minutes into the flight, the three young men rushed the cockpit and hijacked the aircraft. They demanded that the plane switch course to Australia - an 11-hour flight. It was a suicidal request - the plane had only three hours of fuel.
Captain Leo Abate had been hijacked twice before. When he was unable to convince the hijackers to change their destination, he developed a backup plan. Without their knowledge, he headed toward the tiny Comoros Islands. An airport there might be his last chance.

@@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath could you have done it better? Overspeed landings into water are practically a death sentence, having no instruments to top it off, this guy is a fucking legend and probably also quite lucky to have kept anyone alive through it. Also, a sizeable amount of people inflated their vests, something you're always told to not do since, as they explain very well here, it can stop you from being able to get out if water enters the cabin, but that's what happens when you don't listen to the pre-flight safety instructions and then are panicking when you get told to actually put the vest on, that's not something the pilot had or could have had any influence over. Saving almost a third of the people is, in my humble opinion, quite an outstanding outcome given the situation
edit: Wikipedia says the following (I don't have time to read the official report but you can if you wanna verify): "Many of the passengers survived the initial crash, but they had disregarded or did not hear Leul's warning not to inflate their life jackets inside the aircraft, causing them to be pushed against the ceiling of the fuselage by the inflated life jackets when water flooded in. Unable to escape, they drowned. An estimated 60 to 80 passengers, strapped to their seats, presumably drowned.[17][18]"

This pilot is absolutely incredible. Hijacked THREE times, survived all three times and then went back to work after partially ditching a plane into the ocean? He is made of stronger stuff than I could ever be in multiple lifetimes. The way the reenactment made it seem, he really was very brave to stand up to these hijackers the way that he did. Just.. wow. All of that multi tasking and his mind was still on his passengers as well. Those medals and awards were well deserved.

They likely would have been instructed on the proper procedures for using the life jackets when the plane first took off, but panic can really cloud your mind and make you forget what you were told to do in that situation. I mean the one guy was literally telling the other people not to inflate their life jackets but a lot of them did anyway. Here, the passengers had to live through an entire flight fearing for their lives, knowing its most likely going down, then suffer a plane crash, then those who survived end up trapped and watch the water fill in the fuselage and drawn them, such an unimaginable drawn out death, RIP. It is not a surprise when the pilot called out for them to act, people didn't, despite knowing this is their best chance of surviving. Most people are too scared to fight, and even more scared to take lead. If a few got up, many will get up after, but you need those first few with the courage and initiative.

I watched this with my kids, who are 16 and 18, and they cannot understand why the passengers or crew didn't try to overpower the hijackers. I think it's hard for the post-9/11 generation to imagine how different not only security was at airports and on airplanes, but also our mindset about hijackings.
Everyone just knew you cooperated with hijackers and followed their demands. And why not? Nine times out of 10, it worked. Plane lands, hijackers give up or are killed, and everyone's OK. Of course, everything changed after 9/11 -- actually, it changed DURING 9/11, when the passengers on Flight 93 knew their only hope was to rush the cockpit, and they fought back.
Today, everyone just knows you try and overpower the hijackers -- and that's usually what has happened in the few times someone has hijacked or otherwise threatened a flight since 2001.

@@odemaj8605 So you read my comment and thought, "Aha! He's using 9/11 and grammar(???) to compensate for cowardice!"? That gap between what I wrote and what you think it meant is not only as wide as it could possibly be -- it's also downright bizarre.
And here I thought I was using grammar to make sure my writing made sense. You should try it sometime. Especially since your second sentence literally means that the year of your birth somehow made you ineligible to be a coward. I'm going to guess that's not what you meant.
Anyway, as for the point I think you were trying to make, no, I wasn't doing anything to compensate for cowardice because I didn't need to. It was a non-issue since cowardice had little to do with why people didn't fight back before 9/11. They cooperated with hijackers primarily because it was thought to give everyone the best chance of survival.
And history bore that out. Before 9/11, almost every hijacking where cooperation was employed resulted in the safe release of those on board. This flight was a rare exception, obviously, but you can't blame the passengers for that -- hindsight is 20/20.
