Loved the Makem caller who said "he liked Souness as a manager and liked what he did to Newcastle" priceless 🤣🤣
AN was the one who insisted on this clause and has had this in his previous jobs. He's gone to Stoke who are a decent club but because of financial fair play they can't buy players. AN knew the blueprint of Sunderland transfer policy and accepted it to get his name back in the public domain. If he wanted to use Sunderland to move nearer to his family fair enough just say that openly but to leave for talks a day before a big game against Norwich is what has got the fans back up not that he has gone. Plenty good managers out there as talented. Think future club's would look at this situation before employing him in the future
Tired of Graeme constantly saying he made a mistake going to Newcastle... Newcastle made a mistake in employing him!
either way you look at it, it didnt work out so a mistke on both halfs.
However listening to souness the other week when he sez he wanted anelka but the club opted for owen instead & how the 2 players careers panned out from there is very telling.
Carry on pub singing
Did well at Anfield Glasgow Rangers Blackburn
He was doing well with BB R aa he did at Rangers and he does well in this argument ..Souness has managed teams at the highest level in 4 different countries… He’s spot on here
Jordan is right, again. We should not confuse loyalty with integrity. Excellent analysis.
players arent loyal, managers arent loyal, owners arent loyal and fans arent. Fans will jump on a managers back when the going gets tough sometimes and not ride the storm. It's how football is now. Capitalism and loyalty together is rare.
Of course he left for money. Mowbray couldn't believe his luck the other night, fantastic atmosphere, crowd fully behind the team, 37k there, 4 new signings unveiled on the pitch at half time. Played fantastic football. Neil's already been forgotten.
As a Sunderland I can't help but point blame on both parties. Firstly, let's start with AN. He insisted on having a 12 month rolling contract (apparently) and obviously asked for the clause to talk to other clubs (no club would put that in themselves, so has to have came from AN.) I'm not bothered that he has went for more money. Who wouldn't leave a job to go somewhere that was offering a lot more? However, Sunderland offered two improved deals, although not more job sexurity. So if job security was an issue, then why would you accept a rolling contract, or if it's to be believed why would you ask for a rolling contract? Doesn't make much sense. AN apparently has family living around the Stoke area, so maybe that was a deciding factor? But still doesn't make sense. Perhaps it's because AN wanted to have more powers and responsibility that Sunderland's structure cannot allow? Yet, AN accepted terms originally despite knowing the Club's structure. He's came to Sunderland to improve his stock.
Now let's look at the Sunderland operations. Mistakes obviously have came from them too. They accepted the 12 month rolling contract and the clause to speak to other clubs. If these were offered from Sunderland without pressure from AN then that's a really dumb move. However, if the 12 month rolling contract was the club's idea, maybe they are learning from the fact the club has had 26 managers in 20 years. Having managers tied down without proving themselves has been part of the problem just as much as over spending on crap players. That's what led Sunderland into League One in the first place. The structure of the club is a sporting director and head coach model. Limited transfer freedom for the head coach, that's true. I personally like the idea of developing younger players and selling some of them for profit. It's sustainable. Although, we do need some experience in there if we are to achieve any ambition, I.e. promotion (although promotion shouldn't be the goal for this season anyway, if you are trying to be realistic.) So it's a double edged sword and I think things need to be learned moving forward. I think a 12 month contract initially is fine but once proven or succeeded in achieving a particular goal then a more secure contract, with some greater responsibilities should be offered instead of just an improved salary and bonus.
Eitherway, we need to look at who we will get in next. I'm not a fan of Tony Mowbray. But I'll back whoever comes in. I'm glad for what AN did, getting us promoted and playing some nice entertaining football at times. But, the manner of this exit leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Onwards and upwards!
as a sunderland?
@@JohnDoe-yg2eu 😂😂😂
Well we SAFC are doing okay although he was a great manager.. for us..
Neil fucked us over from the start. Requested rolling contract, as he did at Norwich and Preston, so he could talk to Stoke in the future. Was at a Stoke game last August before taking us over which shows he's always wanted to go there. Claims he wasn't backed in the market. Yeah we still have some depth to improve but have the 3rd highest net spend in the league. Fair enough he's moved if they're offering more money plus closer to family but speaking to them day before a match and not being in the dugout??? Lack of respect and professionalism right there and showing his true colours. Even signed a new contract 4 weeks ago with us. Clear these 'rolling contracts' are all a strategy from Neil to let him easily move on and mug his employers off.
As a Newcastle supporter I agree he made a mistake coming to Newcastle I certainly wish he hadn’t come.
I'll second that
100% 😂
When Simon Jordan said footballers are "institutionalised" it reminded me of why I love his analysis.

Would love Simon to get involved in the club. The bloke talks so much sense.
Don't see why Managers need to show loyalty when clubs show lack of patience and sack them within a short time period...By the same token its a sideways step at best. Sunderland are a bigger club and are on an upward trajectory...Stoke are on the opposite and have really not made any progress post Pulis....which is saying something
Souness did a GREAT job at Blackburn - the last manager to lead them to silverware. The sheer cheek of a caller having a pop at him for leaving them!
The first 3 full seasons of Souness’s time at Blackburn were excellent, promotion, a league cup win and 10th place and 6th place, all while playing attractive and entertaining football. From 2001-2003 Blackburn arguably played the most entertaining football in the Premier League after Arsenal and Man Utd.
But unfortunately he fell out with more and more players during his time there, notably the local lad David Dunn and Andy Cole, the squad weakened, and he was actually close to getting sacked when Newcastle came in and paid compensation to take him.
Well that just shows the jocks ethics well done 👏
They’ve done alright out of it, Tony Mowbray is a good manager who’ll carry on moving them to the table.
Sunderland 3 Rotherham 0 and more results like this to come
3 months on YOU ARE RIGHT and this has been done without Ross and Simms
It’s a long time ago, but I remember when Bruce was known for being incredibly disloyal as a manager, notably moving from Wigan to Palace to Birmingham within the space of a few months, but had the cheek and hypocrisy to criticise certain players who wanted to leave clubs that he managed. A few times, like with Robbie Savage, he even cited a lack of loyalty.
The only loyalty Steve Bruce has is to Greggs. No1 customer year in year out.
And he left sheff Wednesday for newcastle
There’s no such thing as loyalty in football. The clubs treat players like pieces of meat and the managers often get paid far less than even average players. Basically pay people the market rate or above it if you really value them or raise it to to compete with rivals. If you can’t do that just accept people move on every few years in this industry.
@@Tom_3566 he's a Newcastle fan thats the only one you'd forgive him for
The club tried to get him in a longer contract but he insisted a rolling contract just like the other clubs he's been at

It's clear it was just a stepping stone for him.
Stoke is an easier commute than Sunderland from the Preston area. With a better contract makes it a quick decision. Good luck to him
Am sunderland fan. I don't think the sunderland cared about Neil leaving was the way he done it. He should of seen the Norwich game out then left. goes to show what he through of he's players and safc. He done that to few clubs now and he do it to stoke. Hasn't at Stoke.. BTW when he took the Sunderland job..he was desperate to get back in...he should if the club loved him..got a better contract..he didn't.. yet at Stoke he signs a 3 year deal..blame the Sunderland owners...
@@craig3420 he shouldn't have signed a new contract 4 weeks ago if he wasn't satisfied. Blokes a snake.
I was commenting on souness saying why did sunderland put a clause in Alex Neil’s contract allowing him to speak with another club. My point was sunderland didn’t put that in it was Neil who wanted that and at the time sunderland to get him to come in the first place would have had to agree to that clause.
@@leewetherelt8925 I think the bloke is a snake, he done brilliant with you's but I've never liked him. Always felt there was something about him.
Wrong..Stoke approached Preston twice when he was their manager and were refused permission to talk to him, infact Preston contacted the FA about an "illegal" approach so how could he have had a clause with every club he's managed?
Simon Jordan telling Souness that what he is saying is an "assumption" well of course it is, that's the whole point of talk sport, where people have opinions on things. Simon Jordan is saying a lot of things that are also "assumptions" He is using the word "assumption" like it's a dirty word, we all make assumptions when discussing football that's part of the fun
I think he was saying that because Souness was saying it as though it was factual
@@paulcook4921 I never got that impression. Unless they are actually inside the club themselves they can only be opinions, same when Simon Jordan speaks
First thing that came to mind was Souness leaving us (Blackburn) for Newcastle, I'm guessing he didn't leave for the brown ale.
At the time I can understand why. Bet he regretted leaving us as his career was done when Shepherd signed Owen over anelka.
5:13 love to hear that old school slang
Loyalty works both ways.
Interesting discussion.
Money Money Money!!! Love that ABBA Song 😂😋😂
Souness has managed teams at the highest level in 4 different countries… He’s spot on here
Now we are in January, Neil is on about trying to bring youth in at Stoke (struggling Stoke) literally Sunderland’s model. He’s also on about the fact at Stoke they can’t spend money on players they can only bring in loans. This all contradicts his stance when he left Sunderland
Why do people instantly think it’s all about money! He lives an hour away from stoke with a settled family, has a wife and his children already in schools. Stays away from his family mid week because of his work, so stoke coming in may work for him and his family! That’s more important than any pay day 🙈 people seem to forget these are still human beings!
So why did he agree to take over sunderland when he's family are settled 🤔
I will hazard a guess that he’s on not on the same money as he was at Sunderland.
The little goblin should not have went to sunderland in the first place
@@goosemav8628 because he has to provide for his family. The longer you are out of the game, the harder it is to get a job. He could have moved his family to Sunderland and then got the sack.
Why not just come out and say that then? Everyone would understand that decision.
Haven't these two heard of FFP? Rich owners can't just spend anymore. I assume Stoke have trimmed their wage bill and cut spending on players because FFP rules mean they can't lose more than a certain % of their club income.
Ye, it was weird that neither of them mentioned it. Stoke have been labouring to balance the books after the disastrous signings that Rowett/Jones made in a desperate attempt to swiftly secure a return. Jordan was wrong when he said 3 years since relegation, it's actually 4 seasons and this is our 5th back in the championship. But the finances are stabalising now and FFP works on a 3 year cycle, so I have a theory Alex Neil has been informed on the financial side and knows that our budgets are set to skyrocket again for a 2nd major push at getting back to the premiership. Hopefully makes a better fist of it than Rowett/Jones.
you missed the main point - 1 club wants to spend well below what they can and hope to make money, the other is thinking about success on the field not the balance sheet
Its no longer a percentage. Its set at no more than loses of 13 million a season calculated on a 3 year rolling system in the efl. I.e u can make no loses first 2 year then go big n have loses of 30 million year 3 n still meet FFP regulations. However efl are strict with it just look at Reading and birmingham. Over past few seasons.
@@stuartpenman6387 Stoke have posted losses of over £200m
And Michael O'Neill has been operating the same way has Sunderland have.
Most of Stokes first team is under 25 loanees the rest are players who they acquired for nominal undisclosed fees.
Alex Neil is leaving Sunderland for a club who operate the same as us, they are not throwing money at the transfer windows and they've tried that and it hasn't worked.
Obviously the chairman thinks Alex Neil can work better with Michael O'Neills team.
@@jimkerr9126 what about this season?
Mr Souness on the development of young players
Apart from guiding them to FA Cup success in 1992, he also oversaw the breakthrough of three young players who would go on to be a key part in Liverpool's improved performances over the next five years - Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp, allowing them to play and develop in the first team where they went on to inspire an upturn in fortunes at Anfield.
Souness later claimed in his autobiography The Management Years that he faced an uphill struggle from day one for a number of reasons. The majority of key players were in their late 20s or early 30s when he took over, and some appeared to have passed their peak.
Well said Graeme talks sense
It is 100% more acceptable for managers to walk out because they can be fired at any moment, loyalty works both ways!
but when players do it the media calls them a disgrace.
Supporters have a “entitlement” which the media play on to sell advertising space. Genius really.
@@rohithraman6488 That may be because, if a player is shite the club can’t get rid of them.
They can be but they have to be paid compensation for the rest of their contract unless agreed otherwise.
Regardless of whether you are a player or manager most clubs will only show 'loyalty' when you are doing well - It's not unheard of for clubs to isolate struggling players, have them playing with the youth teams to force a player out - if a club is capable of doing that why would a player think twice about agitating for a move once it suits them
@@jkif98 If they don’t want to go, they don’t have to. That’s the point.
I wished they talked about The Championship more.
As a Newcastle fan. Correct me if I’m wrong here Sunderland fans but I think Simon Jordan is wrong. It’s my understanding that Alex Neil insisted on a 12 month rolling contract when he took the job.
Bobby Robson spent four years building his Ipswich team, largely developing players through the club’s youth programme.
Is Mr. Souness saying Bobby Robson and Ipswich were wrong in their approach to player development.

Sunderland are far bigger than stoke anyone can see that, from a spurs fan
It was Alex who kind of wanted to have that contract...He lived in a hotel 6 days a week .. He likes to have experienced players..
Sunderland with their 37K home support are playing very well .. Tony Mowbray is perfect for creating the environment for these tallented young players.. Just beaten Rotherham 3.0 tonight .. We Sunderland have a handful of experienced pros in the team.. BUT PAUL COOK in this thread ....has the facts correct
Love Souness and Simon
Can developing young players benefit the English game as a whole can we learn from the German development model.
Many people involved in the game in England would look at the nature of the English Premier League and relate to this plight, pointing at the talented English youngsters who are arguably not getting a chance due to overseas players saturating the league.
Following the DFB’s decision the German football landscape changed, and changed quickly, becoming a self- professed ‘youth football paradise’ according to DFB coach and Director of the Talent Promotion Programme, Jörg Daniel. Daniel claims that there are now over 27,000 clubs, comprising 1.8 million junior players across Germany, meaning the depth of players that the Germans have at the disposal is enormous.
About Sunderland and Alex Neil this was 3 months ago... What has happened ...... in review.. 2 days after Alex leaves for Stoke Sunderland sign 5 young players ... Safc are in 8th position and have had to play 16 games without Key striker Ross Stewart and Simms the other striker for about 10 games.. Ross played his first game yesterday and SAFC won both strikers scored..they are a formidable pair Mr Jordan doesn't really understand KLD our owner (or lacks information) on the man who took over when 23. Everything is improving week by week Everything at the club the infrastucture inc the recruitment team grows the coaching staff the youth teams Liverpool 0 Safc 4 was last weeks result Liverpool got off lightly we overpowered them. Why Alex did not fancy it He probably gets more money at Stoke his family home is close to Stoke but he took the job at Sunderland last season and he did not want it to be permanent ..he lived in a hotel.. However Stoke keep scraping draws. Sunderland have some great players and we are happy with Tony Mowbray who is no mug
He was on a rolling contract at Sunderland ..stoke offered him 3 year deal

Amazing how football fans think that a manager or a player who has no connection to their club apart from being a member of staff should have “loyalty” 😂 like if they got a pay rise of 100% in the same field by another company they wouldn’t be off quicker than you can say “loyalty” 🥴

Loyalty's a rare thing in football, one of the few that come to mind is Mark Noble. But in terms of managers, a few bad results and the club gives them the boot. At least with players they can just sit on their contract.

Funny to look back on this with Sunderland 12 points and 11 places above Stoke, and Alex hasn’t been given £1 to spend yet. Souness analysis not quite standing up there. Simon Jordan bang on the money.
Obviously Graeme Souness hasn't researched Stokes squad it's very similar to Sunderlands lots of loan players in their early 20s in the firs team.
Will Alex Neil play them or replace them with Journey men like himself.
In the recent Stoke Sunderland fixture, Stoke fielded 7 players under 25, Sunderland fielded 5.
The rest of Stokes team is made up of players who were free transfers or undisclosed fees. So Souness is wrong again.

Simon Jordan calls Alex Neil an “average manager”
At the age of 41 he is now seeking his 4th promotion,
That would suggest that he’s above average!
Alex Neil took over clubs who were there or thereabouts the playoffs with established sides developed by the previous managers. Yes he got them playing more consistently but ultimately failed within a couple of seasons and left the clubs in a worse position than when he joined them.
He's joined a club in 17th position in a very competitive league who have sacked their manager after 5 games into the current season, so the Chairman and the club expect success this year. The club are £90m in debt and can't buy in any players due to FFP rules
His tenure at Stoke is a different proposition to his previous engagements.
It remains to be seen whether his makes it a success or not.
But for now, he is, and average manager who has starts off with a little bit of success then fails.
A mediocre first half of 2014-15 season saw Neil Adams sacked at Norwich, Alex Neil took over and then won 17 out of the next 25 to lead them to promotion, Sunderland had been trying to get out of league one for a number of seasons and Lee Johnson was the latest manager to fail and be sacked, Alex Neil took over and led them to promotion so when you say clubs were established they were in fact sacking unsuccessful managers after failing to achieve their aim.
@@marcjones9608 he got Norwich promoted yes, but then they came straight down and he couldn't get them back into the promotion race the following year. So Grahams idea is go to Stoke cause the players are over 25 and don't need developing
If Mr Souness is right in his approach to football management why isn't it working at Aston Villa and Everton?
Does he think Alex Neil is a better manager that Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard?
How does sourness know what was agreed between safc and O'Neil? Plus Stoke are under the FFP rules this season so how is O'Neil going to be backed by thr owners!!
Stoke support Neil in the transfer market? They are in embargo!! 😂😂😂
Stoke are not in an embargo
