  • Whether you are a mountain bike rider documenting their adventures with friends and family or a full time content creator. A high quality reliable action cam setup is one of the most often used pieces of gear you will bring with you. For years GoPro has dominated the space even though there have been many complaints of freezing, over heating, or losing footage all together. Lately we have been hearing a lot of good things coming out about the DJI Osmo Action 3 and we were lucky enough to get our hands on one to test for a little bit. In this video we just wanted to take a look at some different cameras head to head on the same trail with similar lighting conditions and setups. We are really curious to hear your thoughts on what looked best!

Hey Everyone, Hope you enjoy this video! It was really cool getting to ride and hang with Nik, Kailey, & Joey. We hope you enjoy the multiple camera format as well. The trail we were riding ( Levitate ) was so much fun! Here is a link for anyone who is curious about it. www.trailforks.com/trails/levitate-92231/ . We honestly are always trying our best to provide the best experience for the people who watch our videos and one of the biggest things is having watchable footage that is smooth but engaging. Its always interesting to see what the footage looks like after it goes through CZcams compression but so far our pick for quality was
#1 GoPro Standard Lens, #2 Osmo Action 3, #3 GoPro Max Lens, #4 Iphone 14 Pro.
When it came to Horizon leveling we felt like
    #1 GoPro Max Lens , #2 Osmo Action 3, #3 GoPro Standard Lens , #4 Iphone 14 Pro
Finally For Use-ability , Reliability , & Battery It has seemed like this so far
#1 Osmo Action 3, #2 GoPro Max Lens, #3 GoPro Standard Lens, #4 Iphone 14 Pro.
Let us know what you think or if you have any other questions we missed, we would love to hear what looked best to you!

+ no over heating issue (yet)
    + longer battery life
+ $100 cheaper compare to GoPro

They both looked really good. The color on the GoPro was a bit better on my screen but if it wasn't there to compare with the DJI, I don't know if I would see any difference. From a viewer perspective, it seemed pretty comparable.

This video was helpful for me. I'm leaving on a trip to Sturgis SD next week for motorcycle week and I was thinking about getting an action camera to document some of the riding. I was looking into the Insta360. I just couldn't get myself to pull the trigger on the camera knowing I probably wouldn't use it much after this trip. I am however due for an iPhone upgrade (I'm still on the 12). I decided to order a good RAM mount for my motorcycle.. and I'm just gonna upgrade to the iPhone 14 Pro before I leave for my trip. I also ordered an external wireless mic to use with it. Anyway... I appreciate you taking the time to make a video like this.

I think the thing I found most interesting was the sound quality and I’m interested to know what the GoPro and separate mic set up was as it looked like DJI mic and GoPro. I’d love to know about reasonably priced additional mic solutions. Bearing in mind mine is for fun rather than needing the quality you guys have. Really interesting vid, cheers

I noticed that the iPhone gave the viewing feel a little more raw like in the old days but kind of in a good way. The Osmo Action 3 looked really good as well and so excited to see someone put the pressure on GoPro because companies get stagnant if they aren't being pressured by someone else to be better. Not saying they are horrible and haven't come along way but when you have two people in competition things move much quicker. Great video by the way and I liked how you had different riders in front each time.

In the world of youtube compression, its picking nits.
We(youtubers) obsess a bit much. The vid quality on either action cam is very acceptable.
The ease of adding audio on the dji is a nice touch. Audio, imo, is practically more important that overall vid quality. I can deal with a less than stellar image, but nothing gets me to stop watching a video faster than horrible audio.
That said, ive been using the foam covers (wind slayers?) on my gopros for a long while and they really make the gopro on board mic sound pretty clear and block wind noise.
Anyways, just wanted to leave my .02 to offer feedback.
    Best of luck.

Having used both GoPro and DJI for a while, I personally prefer DJI if I know I'm going colour grade it afterwards. I usually film D-Cinelike with the 2.7k full frame capture do get the ability to reframe later. Never really found any of the HDR modes to my liking though.
Portrait orientation is also available on the action cameras, if mobile media is your prime audience.
The fact that you can get three DJI cameras for the price of two GoPro is also quite nice.
GoPro, however, makes instant-pop video for direct sharing easier imo. I prefer working with DJI video, but for someone who just wants to download to phone and send to some social media with minimal editing, I'd say GoPro has the edge.

On the GoPro 11, with the Quick app you can make the 8:7 video have HyperView and horizon leveling. It will also let you get a really good 9x16 show all with the same video. This way you get the good 5k 8:7 which you can than reframe any way you like.

awesome vid as always. the gopro seems to have the edge on video quality (just) however there is more to filming than just the quality, the user experience is important, if your camera overheats... then you have no film at all. the DJI seems to have great features, easy to use, and partnered with the audio attachment that seemed to be the best all round package. Its only the colour that seems to edge the gopro ahead for quality. great comparison though, i have a gopro and am looking at what to have next the gopro 11 is great but the DJI is super tempting.

I liked the DJI and GoPro about the same. The phone worked well for vertical but hard to watch horizontal, and I would say if you are throwing away resolution and natural aspect by going vertical anyway then you might as well use the Insta360 for the versatility, unique angles & lower replacement cost if wrecked. I hear your point about already having a phone, though! I loved and still use the Osmo Action 1. WAY more reliable than the GoPro Hero 7 that I got around the same time. I wonder if the Osmo 3 will be as reliable. I haven't had much trouble with the Hero 11 Mini, though. That is probably my current fave.

I couldn’t agree more with your conclusion. I own the Osmo Action 3 because my GoPro 8 died and that’s not the first GoPro I’ve had die on me. Additionally, the connectivity between the GoPro and their Quik app can be super finicky and I don’t have the same issues with the DJI app/camera. I also really love the DJI accessories and the magnetic clip mount thing that works with both their camera/accessories as well as all the GoPro accessories so I’m able to use all the existing GoPro accessories I already owned. That was a smart move on DJI’s part. Great video!

Here I am thinking I’m searching something novel and probably won’t get many results. Nope, instead one of the best MTB (and overall) channels has a video comparing the exact activity, mount, and phone model I’m researching. Not to mention I’m already subscribed. Haha too good. Thank you guys for putting this out, looks like my 14 pro max will be just fine to capture me sending it literal inches through the air on my next ride!!

The first video and slight angle looks the best for me. I wish you could do a side by side screen between the 1st video and gopro. May be it's just me but I prefer to watch a riding video with less view of the handle bar. I prefer not to see it at all unless it's a product test. I feel that when I'm watching a ride video with just the trail and horizon, I feel like I was the one riding, even though I cant ride that good or even that fast😂😂😂

I really liked the Osmo in the higher definition. I didn't miss the horizon compensation at all. The Osmo in standard was ok. But like the GoPro in most settings, you can (or at least I can, cause it drives me nuts) see a decent amount of over pixelization (or blurr) in the perifrey items in frame (clouds, mountains, rocks...items farther away). The iPhone is probably fine for the weekend warrior. I wouldn't want to make a living (or part of one) doing action stuff after I've used superior equipment in the past......Keep up the good work!!! You and April are always fun to watch!

The battery life and tolerance to a wider temperature range make me favor the DJI. I've had so many rides I couldn't record on because the GoPro was hanging/not starting, or the cold made the battery life plummet.

  • @MckWells

I think the GoPro looks better when it's in Hyperview (I always do this in Premiere Pro with the GoPro FX ReFrame plugin and I record in 8:7). Make sure to record in Natural color mode because it has local tone mapping to preserve those highlights more than the flat color mode. LTM was introduced in the Hero 11 and wasn't present in the Hero 10. Also the cinelike colors really should be reserved for color grading. It's difficult to compare ungraded footage side by side. Both the GoPro and the Osmo looked like they needed contrast and saturation boosted, the iPhone stood as a pretty good reference point when comparing colors. Look at the deepness of the blues and greens and how rich they are on the iPhone and how dull the colors appear on both action cams.
That said, I think the GoPro still has the best detail and highlight recovery with local tone mapping on it's sensor. 4k60 hyperview (or 5.3k 24p if you're in the forest/lowlight) from the 8:7 sensor gives you the best of both worlds for posting on CZcams and gives you the ability to go vertical for mobile. I think regular hypersmooth is still best in class. I saw a couple moments where the rock steady would flick a bit on the lip of a takeoff. And it doesn't seem to have the same depth in the small details on the trail.
I'm not a huge fan of the max lens mod for MTB fov footage. 2.7k is okay, 4:3 isn't super desirable if you're cross posting on different platforms, and keeping the camera level removes the sense of the rider's field of view. It has a tendency to point the camera left or right during or after a berm which just feels weird. It's better used for capturing video of someone else where your own body isn't in view.

Thinking the Osmo 3 gets my vote. I do like the taller frame of the max lens, but you can see a little better quality from the DJI. The standard lens go pro was visibly shakier than the others and during an extended video that might get annoying. Since you use the separate mic audio quality may not really be an issue, but for those who use the camera mic, I think the DJI had better audio. The magnetic mount is also a really nice feature. Curious if the DJI allows voice commands like the go pro, I use the voice command feature quite a bit so i don't have to keep pressing buttons.

I'm a fan of the GoPro, but I didn't notice much of a difference between the Max lens mod. I was impressed with the iPhone, but we definitely need a wider angle. I personally tried the DJI recently, and while I loved the user experience, mounts, accessories, software, etc. I couldn't get past its performance in less than ideal lighting. Under dark trees, or at dusk, the camera lost its ability to stabilize. In perfect lighting conditions it was great, but when things became less than perfect the GoPro took a very demanding lead. For my use case this was a non-negotiable. Thanks for the video!

For looking the best, it's gotta go to GoPro, I mean, it's very expected because of how long they've been top dogs. BUT, for me personally, I would get a DJI Osmo Action 3 because of battery life, overheating, and errors with losing footage from the SD card. I'd rather take a more functional and practical camera than a 5-10% better video. (You can also color grade the DJI footage to have more saturation and contrast which would get you even closer to the GoPro)

What exposure control does the DJI have? Most (maybe all) action cams tend to expose way over, the GoPros allow you to compensate the exposure down, does the DJI offer that?

  • @PuffinPass

I would say the DJI for a couple of reasons. First off the quality is equal to that of the Gopro if not slightly better. Second, the mount system, come on this is a no brainer to be able to just set it once and forget it. Third, pricing...Gopro nickle and dimes the customers to death with every little gadget just to make the thing usable such as the Max lens mod, extra batteries (DJI gives you 3 in the box) and the media mod if you want to attach external audio. My next action cam is going to be the DJI for these reasons mainly but also a few others that just add up to a failing QoL with Gopro, I am just glad there is finally a competitor that can be taken seriously.

D-cinelike mod in Osmo Action is a flat profile made for color correction in post, it offers more dynamic range in exchange of more time editing, that's why it looks very bland, I think this should have been mentioned :)

DJI: buttery smooth on big hits, trees don't look grainy especially when you're going fast. For the audio, since it's a dedicated one, is superb. Color is muted, might need to fiddle with the settings a bit.
GoPro: smooth as well, color is vibrant. Background trees look grainy when you're going fast, only the foreground looks detailed.
I'd take the DJI tbh, I'm convinced because of how EvansMTBsaga showcased it though I think he's using a diff GoPro. It's not bad for the price and the stuff you're getting.

Currently I think the Action 3 has the edge, it's just a shame that confidence with DJI has took a real bashing with regards to the focus issue :( It was obviously a hardware issue and not software but DJI refused to officially state it. There are lots of videos on CZcams showing the fix which was just a minor turn, anticlockwise, on the lens to correct the error as it was set too close to the sensor. I'm now hearing that some Action 4's are also being released with the same issue, I hope they get a grip of QC soon as they could really hurt GoPro this year or next with the Action 5, let's hope so.

I think the quality and color of the osmo is my personal favorite but the audio could be a bit better, GoPro has great quality and great audio but I feel like the color is a little dry, color can always be edited but it’s definitely nice when there’s one less thing to edit. The iPhone is good but doesn’t really compete against the GoPro and DJI. It’s hard to say which is the best but I think with a separate mic the osmo might be the best option. Either way I’m excited to see what the future has for action cameras!

I’ve used go pro and had nothing but headaches, the picture quality is fine but everything else that goes with it is not, battery life appalling, over heating every 30 minutes and turning itself off randomly, then I brought a DJI action 3 with the DJI remote mic and have had no issues what so ever, they are much cheaper as a bonus.
