I own a Basset Hound, and I am really happy that I decided to buy one beacuse they make really good pets. The Basset Hound is hard to train, but all you need is just time. I'm a dog trainer, that's why training my dog was easier.
I really recommend this breed beacuse they make fantastic pets.

I'm about to go and adopt a Bassett hound and I was very curious to ask. How did you get your bassett hound to be potty trained? I know they are quite stubborn so I was curious on someones opinion and what they did

    • @Kris_797
      @Kris_797 Před 3 lety +2

Take your dog outside every two to three hours and after naps and meals. Puppies tend to eliminate after playtime, so you should also take your dog outside then. If your dog eliminates, click the training clicker and give your dog a treat along with lots of praise. This helps the dog to develop positive associations with urinating and defecating outside. While you don't need a training clicker, the sound of the clicker, when used consistently, will strengthen praise and training for your dog's positive actions. Walking your dog as frequently as possible not reduces accidents, it also helps fight obesity, a common ailment among Basset Hounds.
Keep your dog in a crate when you are unable to supervise your dog. Dogs are unlikely to soil small areas in which they must sleep, and crate training helps dogs learn to control their bladder and bowels. Dogs should not be kept in their crates for longer than a few hours, as this increases the chances of an accident, and makes future mishaps more likely. This is especially true for puppies.
Take your Basset Hound outside immediately if they have an accident. This encourages an association between eliminating and being outside. Next clean up the mess with an odor neutralizer. Basset Hounds were originally bred for their scent-tracking ability and are strongly guided by their nose. If your dog smells urine or feces in the carpet, soiling the same spot again is much more likely.
PS. Each paragraph is each step.

Saying 'they make a very good companion with children' is an understatement, they are so calm and tolerant they will happily just sit there while a young child pokes and prods them and pulls at their ears, cheeks and folds of skin, they really are gentle and sweet, like when you feed a dog by hand you gotta be careful because you might lose a finger, not with the Basset they will gently take food from you, no snatching no missing fingers, at least that's how mine used to take food

Bassets don’t have owners, they have staff! Bassets are extremely trainable, they love nothing more than pleasing their loved ones and if they cotton onto something you respond positively to they will do just to get the praise, the laughs, the hugs, the attention or the food…….. everything with the basset is about the food, at least in their eyes anyway!

A well bred basset can weigh considerably more - ours is 36kgs at 5 years of age and quite muscular with an hourglass figure. Very active too - he thinks nothing of 10km+ walks on a daily basis. An absolutely wonderful breed! Negatives: slobbery and hair everywhere :)

Very good video , bit i disagree on a few topics.
    1. Bath every 1-2 weeks is too much. I will say between 1-2 month.
    2. Cleaning their ears once a week is not enough.
It should be gentle cleaning every day.
I really like the video and even laughed a bit, but the numbers and such is very wrong and that may be confusing people.

I lost my Bassethound a month ago. Yes they do have major health issues. So ,if u have a good income to afford a lot of Vet visits as they get older they are the most loving dog to have. Oh, they do get large benign tumours, means lots of surgeries. I can no longer afford this loving breed.

I agree. Our fur friends r definitely not "sad clowns". The bassets we have our highly intelligent, beautiful, gentle, sweet & loyal. This thinking they r "sad" is just a foolish human way of thinking & "clown" is not appropriate way of thinking because although they may make us happy & delight us with their actions & vocalizations, they really not aware how desperate some of us r (me!) 2 have something wholesome & real 2 relate 2. Have a good day & thanx 4 sharing your thoughts.

Nope. They are not guard dogs. They would probably sit there wagging their tail while a burgurlar ripped u off. But u never have to worry about neighbors complaining about incessant barking or howling. Unless u go off and leave it in a strange place for too long of a time like a hotel room.

The drool can be awful. Our last basset (a rescue) was a dry mouth. She only drooled when waiting for food. Our first basset could give you a shower with his drool.
