22 hrs a week can mean anywhere between 35-50 in reality. Lesson prep, marking writing, marking tests, posting a quota of learning aid materials, fixing problems with a new course that isn't developed fully yet etc, dealing with problem students , preparation for observations (ie "professional development") , dealing with school equipment issues, breaks in between classes where you aren't paid but it's not long enough to actually do anything etc all of these things are a part of your contract and are done outside of the paid teaching hours. I'm not saying don't try it, but new teachers should be made aware of this reality and not mislead.
Yes, there is additional work over and above teaching hours. Lesson planning is the biggest chunk of the unpaid workload as an ESL teacher and the time it takes depends on the teacher's experience and how much material the school provides. But it usually won't be more than around 30-35 total work hours per week (if you teach 22 contact hours) for most ESL jobs though.
So?? You have the Same thing regardless, You sound like an American who wants to Get Paid for Breathing in the Job, for using the toilet, for Taking a Shower so you can Go to Work; The American Worker is the Biggest Complainer in the World and Wants to Get Paid for doing nothing, really.
22 hours Full Time, clearly that's not a full week. Where normal people work more hours during the week, teachers are no different. Although contact hours are 22, the pay often takes into account planning time and everything else on the side. It's the teachers job to make their downtime more efficient, improve their planning skills and so on.
@@dead0show teachers are different, you can't teacher anymore than that without burning out. Teacher is really demanding.
There's plenty of teaching jobs to be found that don't require lesson planning. Since you don't get paid for it, find a school that does it for you and provides you with all the necessary materials
This is the first video I watched from you, and I really liked it. It had a ton of valuable info in a short amount of time. I like how you are calm and well-articulated. You seem like a genuinely nice guy! Great job! I will subscribe and watch more.
I love that park. I stayed in some Airbnbs in those Vinhomes condos, too. Loved the views from the higher floors.
Yeah it’s a nice one!
Hey Alex, just wondering have you picked up/studied any Vietnamese during your time there? If so, or you know expats who have, would you mind sharing about how English teachers can learn Vietnamese? Thanks for your great videos!
Thank you, it was very helpful
Hi Teacher.
New subbie here.
What areas would you consider "desirable"
Do we get school holidays to explore?
Hi Alex ive just come across your channel and really enjoy it ,bbut because im old i. Cant do the teaching would love to give it a go though ,and i want to go to Vietnam , thank you for all your vids
Do they accept Bachelor Hons degrees? I only have 2 years left of studying.
Off subject but.....

Hi Alex.. I am Mon native Arabian. Can I have your hand to go to teach in Vietnam? If yes how can I contact you?
Thx, I just paid for a TEFL course
Can I study while teaching? (Online studying)
Are there learning centers where ESL teachers can teach?
I am interested i have my tesol certificate and a bachelor degree in ESL, how can apply for the jobs.
I guess you are teaching in Ho Chi Minh now, Did you like teaching and living more in Da Nang or where you are currently living.
Yes, I really want to teach English in Vietnam. I am a registered teacher by profession from Papua New Guinea. Could you give me some information on how to add apply?
what about International school rates for teachers with PCDE. B.ED, MED, QTS etc?
Just stayed at landmark plus next to landmark 81 for like 3 weeks, a little far for my family to come visit in and out, about 15m 20m ride from district 1 tho. The crib was cool, clean, safe pool few restaurants nearby and vincom shopping center, but not near many bustling street foods, gym was small and had a weird smell tho
I don’t have a degree qualification, can I still do a TEFL or TESOL ?
If u just have tefl and no bacalors degree whats the salary take home a month, cheers
Anyything over $1500 net would compare favourably to ESL Japan, where health and mandatory pension payments skim off a sizable chunk.
the salary is extremely low are they offering benfits like free accomodation a salary of $1200 is quivalent to what people teaching english in china are saving every month after expenses
How much per hour is normal for private tutoring?
To teach in school, do i need à degree in education ou licence ? Thanks
Hey! Do you still offer classes in Cambodia? In order to teach in Vietnam do you have to hold a bachelors?
I never had one when I was teaching in Vietnam. Main issue is that right now due to covid you can only get a one month Visa so it kinda fucks any chance of working long term
Where do you find ESL jobs paying that much for only 20 hours a week? I’ve not seen any on the job boards. Everything now is less pay and 30 hours plus a week
i want to come Vietnam
now I'm teaching in china
do you have any job offer?
Can we bring our family in Vietnam?

Often times the chance of upward mobility is an empty promise. If I were you, I’d use your degree in management elsewhere, but it’s your call.
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. Is it possible to transfer money to an UK account if your salary is paid into a Vietnamese account?
Hi, when I lived in Thailand, I used Wise/Tranferwise - check them out
You’re welcome! Yes, you just have to give proof of legal employment to your bank then you can transfer abroad.
hey Alex , please do you have any idea about this : About the new rules from Department of labor, you must have Toeic 700 (from IIG in HCM) or C1 or C2 (from CELTA), because your nationality don't use English as mother language.
Yes, you need to complete an English proficiency test if you aren't from a designated native-speaking country.
@@ninja.teacher thanks for getting in touch buddy , is this a new update or this is how it's been dince so long?
Onemore Question please: do you still need to pass the test even if you already graduated with a bachelor's degree in English studies?

Hi Mr Alex l am in HCM city with tesol. How can l get in tounch with you
Thanks for all the useful info Alex. Ill be retiring in 4-5 years and am working on my bachelor's. Ill be close to 60 at retirement with a good income. Question is will I be to old to work in southeast Asia? Also im a part time personal trainer. Would that be a benefit for landing a teaching job? Or could I use it for a little extra money if I wanted?
I can only speak from my experience teaching in China, but age is not a consideration provided you have the right 'face.' What I mean by this, is that Caucasian teachers are preferred over all others. This sucks, but this is how it is here. I don't have experience in other Asian countries, but I have heard from people here that have taught in Thailand, this is still prevalent. As for teaching, why do you want to do it? Is it necessary to have the extra funds coming into your account or is it because you need to do it to live in Vietnam? I'm not sure if you're aware, but Vietnam doesn't offer a retirement visa like Thailand, Cambodia, or the Philippines. You'll need to travel out of the country after a set period of time, and then fly back in or whatever. And this can lead to questions being asked by people at immigration.
One thing I have heard, is that the government is meant to be meeting about immigration issues, and there might be a possibility that in the future, they will change their stance on issuing actual retirement visas. If they do that, and you have a decent amount of funds built up before moving, then working isn't exactly retirement, and it might be better to just find another country to live in.
As for the personal training thing, you might be able to get some extra work but it's risky too. If you're on a retirement visa, in say Thailand, then you literally cannot do anything else to earn money under the terms of that visa. It's against the law and you'll get in trouble if you are caught, so you'd be taking a risk. It's why despite the fact that I could make good money teaching privately here, I won't risk it because I have a family here.
At the end of the day, once I get to the point where I'm able to retire, unless something drastic occurs that will necessitate me going back to work, then I won't do it. I'll be chilling on a beach, sipping a beer or coffee, and reading a book. I guess it boils down to what you consider to be an acceptable use of your time. Hope this helps in some small way.
@George Lazenby thank you for all the useful information and food for thought. The reason I'm looking at teaching is its a opportunity too give back to the world, help others. While making enough to live off? In a beautiful place.
@@mikelmeadows6254Vietnamese people dont discrimate foreigners based on their skin colors as long as you follow some common rules like any other society. You need to have a bachelor degree at least and have a citizenship from native english speaking countries like us, uk, australia, canada and newzealand.. Most foreign english teachers in vietnam can easily make more than 2000k a month and live comfortably with local cost of living. Of course some can make even better with 3-4000k in some international school or private teaching schools but its a little more demanding.
Hi. I really like your videos and you have a lot of experience so I was hoping that you could perhaps answer a question for me. I was wondering if grades matter when you apply to teach abroad. If you have a few failed courses, but you eventually got the degree and postgraduate degrees, would there be any issues you may face with being hired? Would really appreciate your advice! Thanks!
Nope, that shouldn't be an issue!
Truly Gorgeous Park.
SIr is there and age limit to teach in Vietnam
Luckily I have my TEFL of my country and it was easy to legalize it. My question is in your TEFL academy because It's located in Vietnam, can people directly legalize it without the need of a ridiculous agent who wants to charge 280 USD for USA or Uk certificate? With the certificate of ninja academy can I go to maybe the ministry of education and later to the ministry of foreign affairs in Vietnam? I would save more money.
Did you check the Academy? It says that it is certified by ACCREDiTAT
"Our Online TEFL Course and Vietnam TEFL Course have been accredited by ACCREDITAT.
ACCREDITAT is based in Scotland, UK and is an independent, international accreditation body which sets rigorous Standards for the accreditation of TEFL Providers. When an organisation has been accredited by an accreditation body, it means that they have been assessed against internationally recognised standards to demonstrate their competence, impartiality and performance capability."
Have you heard of them? Is it valid to work outside of Vietnam?
Hi Alex, i have a tesol cert but its not the original one . would they consider it to teach there in Vietnam?
It depends in which center … and also a bachelor degree or master degree is needed.
Master is better but it is not compulsory for teachers in education center, high schools and lower. However, for university teacher, they do need master degree.
Hi. Do classroom teachers have to be vaccinated in Vietnam? I know you don't have to be vaxxed to enter Vietnam any more.
Yes, most schools will require teachers to be vaccinated.

Hi Alex, do you know if its possible to find an english teaching job even if I am not a native speaker? Right now I am working on my TESOL but I am not planning to do IELTS. Is it possible to find a job as a non-native speaker without IELTS?
There are non native English teachers in Vietnam. In your case, without experience, you might face competition for jobs in big cities. You might sacrifice 12 months with lower pay and teach in smaller cities for the experience. There are facebook for job openings. Make a video presentation of yourself and post there, your recruiters will contact you if they're interested in hiring you. If you don't have a strong accent you could have a chance.
I am a non native teacher in Vietnam. And I just wanted to get out of south America for a 1 year. I found my job in Facebook. I fought with my agent. She abandoned me. If there is a problem with the school you are alone. Well the work permit took a long time to be processed. My visa was about to expire and u had to do an extension. And you will need to legalize all your documents, TEFL , IELTS, diploma.
Thank you guys for the info. Is IELTS an absolute must when looking for a teaching job?
@@luciahlavacova7609 i don't have IELTS. You can have TOEIC, TOEFL. But you must pay an agent to legalize your TOEFL IELTS in us or uk. The problem with Vietnam is a lot of competition. Every tourist that is working illegally and the scams. CZcamsrs who are lying that's it is easy to get a job.
IELTS is all the rage in Vietnam. Not taking IELTS is the dumbest decision that u can make. As u mentioned, u r not a native speaker so how can u show your english level and compete with vietnamese teachers with IELTS 8.0 overall and above. I know this sounds a little bit racist, but if u look white, u will make more money. Vietnamese loves white people, especially they are english teachers.
Hi Alex, long time follower of your channel, just a quick q: do you need to be born in an English speaking country to be able to teach in Vietnam? Cheers!
No need. But if you was born there, you easier an English teacher in Việt Nam more than.
Or you can teach France, Germany ... coz there are some International schools in Việt Nam now
You don’t need to be but it’s typically easier to secure work for those who are.
@@ninja.teacher Thanks, that's unfortunate, as I'm fluent in English, should I still give it a go?
@@cdbaxul4726 No you don't need to be born there as I am not. But I agree with the first comment, it's easier if you were. Just depends where you're from.. if you're from any of the 7 recognized English speaking nations, you probably can find a job. I'm currently looking for a job myself. Good luck to you. ^^
As a Vietnamese IELTS teacher, native speaker is the best choice and get paid highest. Vietnamese teacher is the second best choice with CELTA qualification and graduate international student from England, U.S.A, Australia. As students are Vietnamese right, so it would be a lot easier to communicate in their mother tounge. That is why Vietnamese teachers are pretty good choice, and they get paid lower than native speaker teachers too. For foreigners who speak english as second language, as long as you look white some Vietnamese parents would love to let their kids be your students. But trust me, it is not a really great idea as you are basically a non-native speaker trying to prove your proficiciency in English.
In general IELTS is actually a money making scheme with very little use in real world, one big tip is be natural and don't try too hard. If your vocabulary is good and you watch a lot of English content for 3-4 months and start understanding it well then you should be ok for about 7-7.5 score. There are two kinds of people, people who are naturally good, and people who have to practice, choose your category but approach is same, be a natural speaker and writer without having to think to answer a question.
But finally IELTS is a money making scheme with underpaid testers, substandard equipment and loads of obsolete tactics.
agree wholly with you
If you have had experience teaching in Thailand and China already for 8+ years but didn't get a work permit does the school in Vietnam still recognize that in order to get a higher salary?
Our Minds have been trained to Think that what he said is not a lot of Money, but in Vietnam that Amt could mean having a Quality of Life, and Still being able to SAVE some of that money, while in the USA, people Make 5 times that amount and are Angry and upset all the time due to Stress because it doesn't matter how much they make; NO Amount in the USA is ever enough!!! Is there any kind of police background checks done on teachers or tudors? In Australia for example you must have a "Working with Children" card. I'm not a teacher just a concerned Dad.
In Japan for example, there are no criminal-record checks; however, I would put your mind at ease since typically there are most often (always at my schools) always several staff including other teachers and usually a school manager present at all times. Kid’s classrooms normally have windows and parents are allowed in the classroom to observe lessons anytime. I’ve never taught in Vietnam. If I were you, I’d visit the school with your kids and observe their first 1-3 lessons to make sure you are comfortable. My bigger concern would be the quality of the instruction.
I'm in the process of moving to Vietnam to teach. The answer is yes, there is. You must provide them with a criminal background check.
I’m a native Canadian with a BA degree but no tefl
Any chance I could get a job as an English teacher?
I’ll be starting the tefl course soon tho
A completed TEFL course or other relevant teaching qualification is required by the Vietnamese government to work legally so I’d recommend taking a TEFL before applying for jobs as schools screen applicants based on whether they have one. You can check out our TEFL courses at ninjateacher.com
Any TEFL of 40 USD is accepted by the ministry of labor in Vietnam.
So ninja teacher do you also help with job placements?
We offer a program that includes pre-departure support, in-country orientation, classroom training plus placement in Vietnam. We're not recruiters so don't offer stand-alone job placement.
Hi Alex, please am yet to get a reply. Please. Sorry for the inconvenience.
As a south african, if you work in Vietnam, how do you receive your money each month? Is it like in SA where they transfer it?
They can transfer your pay to your bank account.
Hi Alex. My partner and I have been offered positions teaching at a kindergarten for 70hours per month for 1000$ plus 100$ accommodation allowance. We have online teaching experience but this will be our first time going to teach overseas. Is this a reasonable offer that we should look at accepting or is it below par?
It depends on your nationality, qualifications and where the job is (smaller cities pay lower typically but living expenses are lower too) but this is quite low if it’s HCMC or Hanoi.
@@ninja.teacher thank you for the reply. This is for Vinh city in Nghe An province. We are native English speakers from SA. We both have degrees and TEFL certifications.

So does the 3 year work experience requirement not apply to ESL teachers for the work permit?
Yes, just a bachelor's plus TEFL needed for ESL jobs according to all the schools we work with.
The thing is that the school will hire you. You will come with a business visa 😂 of 3 months. In this 3 months you will apply for a work permit. The ministry of labor is requesting you 3 years of working experience certificate legalized. So probably school are giving money. A person from Egypt was teaching for 2 years. Before 2020 it was easier. No need for C1 certificate, no need for TEFL because his school gave false documents 😂 now he wanted to renew his work permit and he was black listed from Vietnam 😂
If you get the PGCE, can you use your 2 years experience teaching with TEFL or do you have to get experience in your home country?
It depends on the school but some international schools will accept teaching ESL experience plus a PGCE.
@@ninja.teacher the years of experience is a requirement of the ministry of labor.
How can i get that job?
Can you work as an English teacher in Vietnam with only a TEFL or TESOL certification and no degree ?
A bachelor's degree is required by the Vietnamese government in order to process a work permit and Temporary Resident Card and work legally in the country.
@@ninja.teacher The youtuber reborn abroad is promoting working without university diploma. He says he has contacts with the ministry of labor.
Aren’t living expenses high in Vietnam though? And will that salary range suffice?
You can live very comfortably on that salary range from my personal experience and many of our teachers.
@@ninja.teacher If you do not mind, may you kindly do a general breakdown of expenses for an entry level salary and the salary range that you mentioned, is that before or after tax?
I will agree with one particular aspect of this (from a perspective of being in Cambodia )which is that schools do seem a bit desperate . Eg my school employed only (almost 100%) native speakers (for the expat jobs)for my first 10 years here but since post covid reopening they have hired , at my campus, approx 50% non-native English teachers. And it is a top school. I've never seen anything like that here.
How are the salaries in Cambodia?
Which school?
@@TerryFreak389 low, but so is the cost living.
As if native speakers are the only ones capable of speaking fluent English. I’ve seen native speakers w horrible grammar 🙄
Cambodia looks so dangerous
I can’t believe I have to ask this question but will a non-native speaker of English who’s not white get a similar salary?
The reputable schools in Vietnam don’t discriminate based on race. There is a preference for hiring native speakers as ESL teachers, though, so it typically is more challenging to secure work, and you may be offered lower rates, unless you have higher qualifications such as teaching degree etc from your home country.
@@ninja.teacher Thank you for the response.

Not legit no. It's part of the work visa requirements.
I'm quite surprised at the salaries you mentioned. I visited Vietnam in early 2017
Where I remember salaries were 22-25 $ per hour.
Back then salaries in china were a bit higher but not a massive difference
And the work was more demanding. more hours and mandatory hours in most schools outside of teaching hours.
In 2019 while living in china I was still thinking Vietnam is probably the better choice for a teacher who comes for a year or two, although in china the salaries were around 3k
Nowadays those same teachers in china could easily require 4 and up to 5k

Is it possible to teach in Vietnam with a D.U.I. on my record?
In some cases you can get a local check in place of a background check from your home country.
In my case I have a felony marijuana charge. According to the attorney I had spoken with, by completing my B.A. I will qualify to have my charge expunged (June 2025). This is the state of Illinois and different states may vary in law though. I just finished my A.A. and have a clean record otherwise. Once your charge is expunged, only law enforcement will see the expunged charge and a potential employer would not see the expungement. I want to teach in Vietnam also. Having an FBI criminal background check, school transcripts etc. and take them to the Vietnamese consulate in whatever state you are in and they will translate it to Vietnamese for potential employers. This is the process I have to go through. Good luck !!
I think a DUI will automatically expunge after a 10 year period anyways, if all required classes are completed that have been assigned by a judge/court.
people should be warned that ho chi mihn city is a pretty sordid and amoral place with rife corruption. that corruption goes right to the top , so dont get in trouble, whatever you do and keep your passport as safe as possible.
If you’re after the money, China is the place to be. I made about $3,500/month for teaching 9 hours at most at one point. Problem is that ppl tend to go kinda crazy if in China too long, and the jobs there are pretty ridiculous. A lot of them don’t really consider you to be anything other than a fancy object the school owns, so job fulfillment and pd potential is incredibly low. There are exceptions of course though. Vietnam offers a more rewarding experience imo, but to each their own

Just a small point on English grammar/vocabulary: at 01:26 you mention 'less hours per week' when the correct term is 'fewer hours per week'. 'Less' is used for aggregates (time, salt, traffic) that cannot be counted whilst 'fewer' is used for things that can be counted (hours/days, grains of salt, cars/vehicles).
As of January 2023, Vietnam is flooded with teachers and wages remain low. Do not be naive and fall for all the sugar-coated talk you hear on sites. The ESL industry here is going downhill. They now prefer many Europeans, or teachers form all corners of the world who are non-native speakers because they work for lower wages than native speakers, and they also use this as an excuse to pay lower wages. You will see 25-35 people applying for one job as of 1/2023. Furthermore, some of these non-native English speakers have worked themselves in to HR and language school managers who will only hire teachers from their non-native English -speaking home country. It is not a fair system at all. They prefer young teachers under age 35, often state you must be good-looking, and often hire women over men regardless of accent, experience, or education.
Most of our TEFL course graduates receive multiple job offers earning on the high end of the range mention in this video so this take of a flooded market and low wages doesn’t match our data.
@@ninja.teacher Receiving offers and getting a job are two different things. I don't know where you get your data. Maybe that's all you rely on-data, instead of being here, seeing it, experiencing it. like so many companies, you could make a war sound inviting as long as people but it that's all you care about.
Seriously, i was taking to people from Africa, i think it was Nigeria. She told me she wouldn't care earning 300 USD per month in Vietnam. Her dream is to come with a Visa for long term and do Partime Jobs. The companies that are selling TEFL, TESOL certification are making up the situation to look easy to teach. Even native speakers are scammed by schools. Even people which the list of 80 countries , they are teaching illegally with a tourist visa. 😂 There are a lot of native English speakers backpackers with not TEFL who just cross Cambodia every month. People from Chile don't even need Visa for 3 months.

It is not hilarious..if you teach and live in US then more stressful and you spend almost your salary for expensive living cost..
You should look into how far it goes in Vietnam / what it has to offer compared to teaching / living in the states .
Drugs illegal there ?
7:16 Don't you need a master for University? Can you bring your pets?
Many universities require a masters, yes, although we’ve seen people teach at unis without one.
You can bring pets. It’s an expensive and complicated process though.
It used to be that ESL was a reliable industry for people that went abroad, found they liked it, and wanted to stay. Then CZcamsrs started posting videos about how cheap countries were and how much banh mi and beer you could afford on teachers' wages. ESL has since become a vehicle for desperate economic migrants. The supply of teachers swelled and the quality of work and remuneration shrunk. As videos like Ninja Teacher's continue to bring in foreigners interested less in foreign culture than a cheap apartment and job that demands little expertise, it's no wonder the industry is now a race to the bottom, and that locals increasingly dislike the entirety of ESL teachers.
too negative, dog
Is 3 years of previous experience really a requirement. I'm a (decent) Saffa and the d00ds from other countries are pretty hard on us. . . Probably because of our less honest countrymen. They claim 3 years apostilled experience is a deadset requirement. Is this true??
Teachers with a degree and TEFL (without proof of 3 years experience) are being able to obtain work permits in our experience.
@@ninja.teacher got it. I've been sent on a wild goose chase by Brits and Americans who don't want to hear of another Saffer in their area lol
