  • If you've watched a video targeted towards beginners you've most likely heard them say that you should throw putters early on. Honestly...I've said it countless times on this channel. Today though I want to highlight an additional reason I think people should throw putters more often as well as get more comfortable throwing these types of discs. The "Comeback Mechanic" is something few players are discussing and yet it hinders many player's abilities to score! What is this reason and mechanic?? You'll have to watch to find out!

When I first started playing I was grabbing 12 and 13 speed discs thinking they would go farther as most people do. I jumped back to putters pretty quickly (advice from one of your older videos) and started getting way more accuracy. I have slowly worked back up to 11 speeds but I find I throw putters on SO many holes and do pretty well!

I am your target audience. Started disc golf in Dec '22. Am Five foot three, 🦖arms and slow arm speed. Drive 250-280'. Six weeks ago, lesson with owner of Tree Love in Dallas got me a baseline form. A handful of mindful 15-30' putting work(working until making 65-100 putts from 15-30' measured) got my putting confidence up. Play regularly in +18-25mph winds. College ultimate background +20yrs ago. Only play 9 hole rounds on par 3 courses in Dallas/Richardson area. Went from +3-5 over PAR to Even to +1over PAR rounds. Tree Love lesson made aim better, got nose down, improved putting technique. My drives leave me +150-200' from C1, but I throw a firm Nomad and get into C1 about +75% of the time. Now I expext to drain 15-20', hit metal out to 35'. Putting mental affirmation, "Straight for the Chainbang." I expect to hit metal on every C1 putt. My two putts have greatly diminished. Even on +350-400' Par 3s, PAR feels readily attainable. Maybe I'll throw over 350' regularly one day, but right now I am having a blast getting so mamy PARs that a bogey doesn't bother me. The occassional 🐤 is icing on the round. Thx for all the great content. 🙏

Fantastic advice! I can confirm, playing for a while with putters only (ok maybe a mid too) has helped me a lot. Over the winter, the most accessible course to my home is a shorter 9-hole. All holes less than 300'. I made it my mission to understand the putter and mid up shots, and it has carried through to my summer golf game as well. Now I can confidently putt within 15' (working on 20) and feel fairly confident with upshots within 150' or so.
    Everyone, DO IT!!!

I was just thinking about this the other day. I truly feel like I'm in a low point in my game, as I was playing less in the winter but also was playing way better. My distance has dropped since then and I really believe that's because I've been leaning on my drivers. Back to putters and midranges! They're more for to throw, anyways.

I fell into the described trap. I started playing this past winter, and already have bag with 13 discs in it (3 putters, 3 mids, 3 fairway, 2 distance, and disc I use for weird scrambles). A couple weeks ago, I decided to go back to basics, and have been playing a 9 hole par 3 course (ranges from 75ft to 190ft) with just 2 of my putters on most days after work. I can tell that my approach accuracy and putting is improving dramatically.

Im throwing them about 240ft. So I've ditched my mids even on any hole under 280ft. Im getting used to the taller rim and it's not bugging me so much because I'm liking the results on my drives and approachs!

Great Video. I think a HUGE factor should be the course that you are playing on and how forgiving it is when you don't land on the fairway. A wide open course is much more inviting to throw the power shot, but when playing on a place with OB or thick woods, that's when it will really pay off to go the putter heavy route.

this one guy I was talking to the other day says his pals won't let him use a putter through a whole game. He says when he tries to throw distance, it ends up rolling every time. He just needs to understand the flight character of that disc.. it's a real nice putter too.. it would really float if you chucked it - I forget the brand black center with white rim kinda flexible. It's a good topic !

  • @jakec5550
    @jakec5550 Před rokem

Love this and I genuinely agree. For me, it's not an "ego thing" so much as it's a "putters feel weird when I try to throw them for distance" thing. My slow speed go to throw is a midrange (EMac Truth, usually) and the only "putter" I've found that I can throw comfortably is the Envy and it's sibling the Proxy. I think this is because they feel closer to Midranges to me. Whereas my putting putter (EMac Judge) and other putters feel deeper to me and come off my fingers weird. Probably means I need to work on my grip with putters, but I just wanted to share my experience.

Pigs and Judges ALL DAY!! I have no need for anything else. I've stopped bringing a bag. I bring a new pig, and old pig, a judge and a do all Tbird in case I feel loose and have some wide open space to grip lock into. I get my old pig out to about 250 and my Tbird 310 (maybe). With putters I'll take the accuracy, cut the long holes down and score on the short ones. 2 years into the sport and at 45 years young, I see no reason to change. Game is much more enjoyable now. Can par most courses in my area and that's good enough for me.

I went to my home course last week and played with 3 discs. An over stable midrange, a slightly under stable midrange and a putter. I shot +5 (par 4s included, and two missed putts that shouldn't have been missed). My average at that course say this year is probably +8. And for reference I normally don't throw anything over 9 speed. Most of the better golfers I play with rarely pull out a distance driver. I'm constantly reminded by them to throw the slowest disc possible that gets you to the shot.

I'm doing a reset this year. I've shelved everything above 5 speed. I have a stable 5 speed, overstable 5 speed, understable 5 speed, very understable 5 speed, overstable 4 speed, stable 4 speed, and my putter. I've found my form is improving. I'm now into May with using only those discs. I plan on re-evaluating in July to see if I might add a couple of 7 speeds.

Super interesting. Most courses I play my max distance probably puts me 20 feet short. That's max and if I hit a good line. Basically taking mostly 3s now, because I usually have a 75 foot upshot. I went to a disc score the other week. Found a nine hole open park course. It was the first course that I could actually reach basically every hole. I did throw putters and mids but I really struggled. Further than I am used to throwing those discs, especially putters. There is long nd technical course near me that I don't play. I think that I am going to start going there nd just throw putters and aee if I can get pars.

Yeah, I'm guilty. I recently got seriously into the game and I did start with lower speed discs. But I mainly focused on mostly full power mid range shots and once I started getting those up to 250-300 feet consistently, I instantly started buying the fairway drivers. And my upshot game is still by far the most inconsistent part of my game. I need to go back to the basics and just start focusing on putters again

  • @tylerking7890

Ironic timing. My home course has a hole that’s just over 400’, all downhill, and has an understable line and overstable line, both separated by a thiqqq line of trees. Understable line is tough, but I’ve been trying it again the past few months. Couple weeks ago I get here and think, “Hm…what if I throw my beat-in Envy off the tee? It’s understable…”
While I missed my line, the disc found a gap in that line of trees and turned right, and it got down substaintially far, enough that I was able to approach with my Berg for a Bird. 👌🏼
Next day I try the same thing, hit the understable line this time, and I have a clear, 150ish ft. look at the basket to park it for another birdie, which I got.
So…I birdied a 400’ hole with putters. Sound advice, Robbie! 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

That's a good benefit with playing in the snow. After you loose a driver under the surface it forces you to throw your putters and mids more.
But I personally say the greatest thing for improving my consistency is proper field work. 30 mins a few times a week did so much, and especially when I switched from my course bag and instead put together a smaller bag with 4 pairs of discs. 2 Proxies, 2 Envys, 2 Hexes and 2 Reactors was what I ended up going with and just throwing the same discs and practicing angles with similar discs instead of a bag of 20 different molds made such a huge difference.
I think one of the downsides with going from driver to putter on the course is especially if you're not used to throwing a putter it's so easy to shank it and then feel discouraged from doing it again. Especially if you're the kind of beginner that started throwing with fairways, like I had to work away so much OAT after that first year, but now I'll throw my Proxy/Envy at pretty much anything under 60m. First year playing absolutely everything was dx Valkyrie range.

One thing I’d say about the break the 300 foot hole into 2 150 foot shots is I think for most people a 200 or 225 foot shot is very similar difficulty to the 150 foot shot. I find it much easier to throw a 220 foot shot and then a 80 foot shot.

When I do go play longer courses I find myself grabbing drivers when I can honestly just throw a mid range the same distance more accurately. After six years of playing I have gone back to playing and practicing with throwing putters. I reached a point to where I wasn't progressing. It was starting to get to me. I knew I could play better than I have been. I could feel my body not doing what I knew it should have been doing. I felt I was constantly trying to max power drivers and the majority of the time, I was sacrificing form and control. I had to stop. I've even been playing our minis with putters only. Knowing I was not going to be in contention to place. But I was really at the point I was about to give up disc golf for good. By playing with putters I have started helping my form along and even getting close to the same scores at the minis with putters as I was doing with my whole bag! I may go all summer like this.

  • @albertoquagliaroli4230

Ok, but for me (short thrower, max 95 m, 310 ft), being essential the grip, I find that my grip on a Putter (I have 15 putters, more than discs in other categories) is notably different than my grip on Fairway and also Midrange discs. So, for throws up to 40-50 m (130-160 ft) I usually use a putter, but farther, up to 50-60 m I find much better the midranges. Over 60 m I go with fairways.

I think the only compliments on my throws are putters off the tee. I do approach with them too but I still beyblade them into the atmosphere.

I love throwing putters. If it's in my putter range I'm throwing a putter.✌️

I am an older guy been playing 4 months, family have bought me must be 50 discs, and I have to admit I dont get it at all, I throw exclusively a beat up old base plastic destroyer 0 feet to 280 (max), where I pay its usually windy 15mph and up , putter just blow away in the wind, the destroyer I can direct in the wind and well seems to put okay, short shots I just throw it gently, works great for forehand , just shorter shots on F/H as I get a bad feeling in my elbow if I push it much over 220 ish

This is why I buy discs labeled as "Putt and approach" so I can fool myself into ot seeing them as straight up putters.

I wouldn’t say only putters, but if your playing a pitch and putt course (all holes are 250ft or shorter) just limit yourself to like 7 speeds or 5 speeds and lower, find those neutral or understable discs you can throw well. Being able to throw your mids off the tee and putters for everything else is far more valuable than sticking solely to a putter only round. Plus…mids and putters are hard to forehand IMO and most people would be better off learning and trying to throw an understable putter or mid straight(ish) vs forcing themselves to have overstable putters that can take the torque of a forehand and using that shot too often. Like how many times do you see Calvin or Simon forehand a 100-150ft layup? Almost never.

Thanks for your thoughts here, I am not following on the significance of the last sentence though? Would you mind elaborating on that one and how it relates to more folks throwing putters?

100% AGREE... PUTTERS 1 2 3 4 , MIDS ARE JUST 5 SPEED.. WHY DO YOU ALL THROW THE MID FOR A MILLION SHOTS AND BAG 4 OF EM 🤣🤣.. I THROW PUTTER COMFY 250.. BUT 280-300 IN RIGHT CONDITIONS. BARELY USE MIDS.. IF IM AT A TEE THAT IS UNDER 300 IM PROBABLY USING A PUTTER.. i highly recommend being good at left to right with righthanded backhand. as soon as comfy with that, most putters well go on any angle you put on it.. also try to master nose as putters can be a devil with slightly too much nose biting and cut rolling.. a soft putter is essential on slopes, will stick

The advice, "beginners throw putters" is for backhand throwers, which is 85% of the population.
Throwing putters forehand is challenging for everyone, including pros. (Former Ultimate players have an advantage here)
Better advice IMO, "beginners throw neutral 5 speeds". Forehands are easier to learn with 5 speeds, and all the disc flight characters are close to putters. Like putters you can throw midranges with touch. PDGA #308.
