"he said the lawyer was a confidence man.."
This is the little details that made this show so good. "Confidence man" is the original term that was shortened to "Con Man".. It was only used in older times, like as in when the elderly lady was young. She used the correct term for her time, and the writing... just.. what an amazing show this IS.

A plot hole: Once he’s retrieved the check, there’s no reason to keep it and it’s evidence against him. Tear it up and throw it down a sewer. Or if you want to erase its existence, tear it up, put it in a nice bowl of cereal, eat the thing and let your digestive system and the toilet dispose of the remaining particles.
And paper is a fiber, so it’s even good for your digestion! 😜

This guy seemed a bit above average intelligence, but not a bad person, so committing murder (if he did it) would have thrown him. Not thinking clearing. But even the really bright killers usually screw up something. It’s their one bright mind against literally an army of investigators, scientists, computers, data banks, now dna evidence. It’s not a great era to be a killer in. I must admit, this would be a hard one for a jury though. Should this guy go into a system, where he could be snuffed out like a light in days, for erasing a piece of filth? A defense attorney would play those jurors like a violin. But I’m guessing it’s not him? Maybe his wife?
