  • In this talk, researcher Keisha Siriboe shares insightful learning behaviors that parents, educators, and concerned adults can apply within their lives as well as in the lives of children. Drawing from global education policy trends and her own research, she advocates for more parent-child reading aloud to promote parent-child bonding as well as effective literacy development. Keisha Siriboe is a researcher focusing on early childhood literacy, parent education, access and equity issues within Hong Kong. Her research won an outstanding publication award from the American Educational Research Association this year. In Hong Kong, she provides parent-child early literacy programs through her social enterprise, Stories of Us, and has established a long-term social service children's program at St. Barnabas Society with the Graduate House, University of Hong Kong (HKU). Globally, she works with the Word Educational Research Association, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the American Educational Research Association to cultivate student leadership within educational research and policy development. She is currently a doctoral candidate studying English-language education at the HKU, and in 2014, she was the first African-American to graduate from Beijing Normal University with a master's degree in comparative education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have such fond memories of my mom reading to me and my sisters throughout elementary school
It really nurtured my love for books, and my connection with my mom
I am so grateful she took the time to do that each night 💕

From the time I knew that I was pregnant, I started reading to my child. I had read about it in an article where the Chinese people did it. I tried it, and I think that it really worked. It introduced children to reading, and loving books! I believed it because at age three, my daughter knew how to tell the time, and counted from one to a hundred, and lots more.
She was enrolled in grade school at age four. I took her to a school nearby and told a teacher how much she knew, and I'll like to enrolled her. The teacher enrolled her, soon after giving her a few multiplications, divisions and subtractions. Then asked her to read a lesson from the first year book in her class; the teacher was surprised at how well she read, with correct punctuation.
She was then taken to the first standard class, and was asked to read the first lesson, from a child's book. As she stood reading in front of the class, many children bent their heads in shame. Their class teacher said this child is only four years old, and have never been to school, and she can read a lesson from a standard one book, ONLY FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!
MY daughter NEVER went to a Montessori school; I taught her at home. I do think that every parent should try to teach their children as early as possible!
Miss Patricia Khul from Washington, Seattle university also believes it!

Have you read the article in question? I suspect not, so how do you know it is nonsense? I haven't read it either, but perhaps it is more to do with the concept of reading with children in general and not specifically from conception...

Well, I can't find the article but it's true that kids can hear speech while in the womb. That doesn't mean that kids will be smarter or anything like that if they're spoken or read to. I think it's more likely the way a parent teaches kids once they're born. Continuing to read aloud to them, teach them basic skills etc. from a young age.

Im 18 and Im reading 'a series of unfortunate events' to improve my English vocabulary, but sometimes i find it difficult to understand certain words, and occasionally put it down, even though I love reading. In my city we don't have a freakin bookstore library let alone books in English so I tend to read e-books to my little brother it's difficult when you don't have the resources you need to learn, and I have to use the internet for literally everything. however, I feel like my brother's reading skills is getting better i see a little improvement I'm so proud of him, and I hope to see him one day speaking English fluently, i don't want him to have the same education that I had. besides, is not his fault being born in a poor family

As a former Kindergarten teacher, and now an elementary school administrator, parent and grandparent, I absolutely agree with the importance of parents reading to their children regularly. The key is truly to be consistent and enjoy those precious formative years of early childhood. My children, now grown adults, all had an amazing start to school because they could read before kindergarten.

I was reading a story with my little 4-year-old daughter last night, interacting as best as possible, and she remembered what had happened and asked questions this morning on the way to kindergarten. I listened to another story last night and immediately pushed myself into reading with her while she learns to cope with divorce and her own development.
I agree with this connectoin and bonding.

The literacy component and bonding is great! The opportunities to follow up with discussions to teach and learn values is INCREDIBLE! I honestly think we should do more reading aloud with each other as adults. I think it has the potential for more power than watching movies or discussing books read separately.

Story time is my favourite time of the day. There is something magical about fairy tales/stories. We read to our children every day. In very rare cases that we don't do it, I feel guilty. Children learn so much through stories. I am grateful to my parents who were avid readers and they were buying lots of books for us. Buying picture books is my obsession. And I started writing them as well.

This soooooo true. I have no idea what genes attributed to my intellect but I do know my mother read aloud to me since I could remember thus taught me to read before I reached kindergarten. The fact my mother & father did this in a severely negative environment lead to my high IQ more so than any gene expression especially since the fact is that IQ heredity is expressed on a higher level in richer upper class social & family environments. As for the kids in Hong Kong the parents must be talking math formulas out loud with their kids😂

Also read aloud books beyond their reading level while they follow along in their book so they can match more "advanced" words to their sounds, if a kid wants to get a book beyond their reading level, let them dont tell them its beyond their reading level, if they want to read a book they will work to read it.

I live in Bangladesh, where libraries are not functioning like most other countries. Most of them don't even have a children's section. However, I will try to follow your suggestion. Apart from the libraries, what is your opinion in general? Should I read to him general (I mean, not specific to his age) storybooks, or age-specific books? Also, since he studies in a Bengali medium school, where emphasis is given on his mother tongue, Bengali. I was wondering if it is useful to read to him English story books and translate into Bengali. This way he may develop a taste for English and catch up the language sooner, when his school starts increasing emphasis on English (in later years). Thanks.
