  • Since his debut in 1947, Chief Wahoo has represented the Cleveland Indians. Although the image has long been controversial, recent team victories has brought the logo under closer scrutiny. But where does the image and name actually originate?

    These protesters need to get a life. Chief Wahoo is a symbol, a caricature, a cartoon. It's not supposed to be realistic. It's goofy and whimsical, and designed to make people, including Native Americans, laugh in happiness, not as a derogatory gesture. It is also interesting that no evidence has ever been shown that a majority of the Indian population has a negative view of the Chief. I am certain of this because if a poll did show this, believe me, the protesters would use it! This whole thing should be a non issue. It figures that two people who lead the protest are being indited for embezzling government funds that were designated to go real Native Americans What a bunch of hypocrites!

      A lot of Irish are proud of being depicted as hot-blooded, aggressive. I have friends in Ireland. They don't care about this. They like being called the Celtics or the Fighting Irish.
      A lot of Irish - Americans go to or open up bars and celebrate this.
      I don't know any Native Americans proud to be made fun of as Chief Wahoo - which if you listen to this video is a derogatory name.
      Please consider an end to arguing for the sake of making a point - try to resolve issues instead of arguing for the sake of enjoying an argument.
      If people are offended for good reason, then move on and find a new name.
      If enough Irish or Irish-Americans are offended by Notre Dame, then they should change the name. I know hardly no one - and I'm a die-hard football fan - and I have a friend who started on the ND oline and works for ND right now. I hear almost zero protest about ND's mascot. Nobody when I went to ND was protesting about the name.
      So it sounds like you're using ND to argue - but its a bad / weak argument bc few Irish people are truly offended. Whereas plenty of Native Americans are offended.

    Their used to be a Chief Wahoo McDaniel who was a professional wrestler. He always wore his Indian headdress to the ring, did the Indian war dance, and had a chop to the chest moved called the tomahawk. He was a real Indian too, playing the stereotype Indian. Does that make him a racist, making fun of his own people?

    • @Niros8889
      @Niros8889 Před 4 lety +1

      No. Nor does it make him insensitive towards those who do deal or have dealt with racism. However, if you (on an assumption you're not a Native American or at best your an "Elizabeth Warren") did the same it could be misconstrued. (or perhaps properly construed)
      Chief Wahoo was formed on the basis of racist inclinations towards Native Americans, the newspaper articles in the video above show it plain, however, society and culture change. Similar symbols and many of the other "derogatory names" (i.e. Indian or Redskin) have been used by Native Americans to assert their culture.
      Their use of those derogatory symbolism doesn't mean some won't be offended by let's say "The Ridiculous 6 by Adam Sandler" or even Chief Wahoo. Of course not everyone will share that view, but is it wrong for someone to have that view?
      Is it wrong for a person to be offended? Is it wrong to want change, or even protest for change? I would say it isn't, nor is it wrong for the Cleveland Indians to get rid of Chief Wahoo. Personally, I think they should get rid of it, but this isn't an important hill to die on. (At least the symbolism, anyway.)
      However, I don't think we should "ban" it. That is the government shouldn't ban it. Corporations can ban the symbol or the names if they like.
      Anyway, "Pro-Wrestling" is soap operas for men. lol. Just felt that needed to be said.
