They'll never be another character like Jock Ewing again. Jim Davis's role as Jock has to be one of the greatest in television history. The man stole every scene he was in.
elton john he was a solid actor with a very strong presence n well casted....his character became an intricate part of the show n it was never the same after his death. the writers seem to go in circles after his departure from the show.....the actro who played clayton farlow was well cast but he was by far know jim davis.....the wrtiers should have written jock out of season 5 all together...then within the last few episodes recast his role....i think that a phil carey, forrest tucker, or chuck conners could have pulled it off(each was tall with a very confident n demanding presence)....when they finally did attempt to write him back into the show...he was ill cast with steve forrest n because of the backlash the writers abandonded the storyline...

In the end, though, they were each other's soul mate, dysfunctionality, and all lol.
Yes. You really see how complicated their Relationship could be at times. Remember in The Pilot Episode where JR Followed Jock outside like a "Punk" where he's smoking a Cigarette. Sometimes JR acted so "Needy" when it came to his Father's Attention.
Jock always put his family's welfare before Ewing Oil which made him a believable & highly memorable character. Even though Cliff Barnes and the OLM was busy trying to destroy his company, Jock's first concern was for the whole Ewing family. TV shows today lack such a strong character. Even on Dynasty Blake didn't have the presence that Jock had. Alexis always got the best of Blake but Jock never had that problem. In a famous scene, Jock told Bobby off when Bobby scolded him in public & in front of Jock's friends when Jock took 10 million from Ewing oil for a project and Bobby didn't like it. Jock told him "nobody gives you power. Real power is something you take!" Jock set the tone in a fight with Miss Ellie. He sternly warned her saying " you're overstepping your place Miss Ellie! It isn't running this ranch. It isn't running Ewing's businesses! It isn't to say what we keep or what we give away! I am still the head of this household! With or without your permission!"
i clearly remember the episode where jock tells miss.ellie she is overstepping her place(that episode was in season2)...that was the late 70's...during that time texas men believed the women's place was in the bedroom or the kitchen n not the boardroom....Dynasty was ground breaking because alexis was the CEO of a billion dollar company...there is an episode in season 3 where she calls a meeting of the board....she comes into the boardroom(full of old boys) takes her place at the head of the table and tells them..she is a very direct women...she wants their approval to merge the two companies and if she does get the approval...she is prepared to fire them all on the spot and replace them with a board that will approve her plan...she appeared strong,confident, and a women in control...ground breaking and well ahead of its time....what mny overlooked was that JR was the mirror image of jock......he idolized his daddy and emulated his ways there is a clip on youtube where ellie asks everyone to leave the room so she cld have a one on one with JR...she expresses to JR that as she has observed him over the years she often regrets letting go of him too soon...she goes on to xpress while jock has mny redeeming qualites...JR has none.....this is the one and only time she speaks of his mny infidelities which he was nvr discreet about....jock was a hard driving Texan who had no tolerance for weakness and believed on the strong survive....gary was miss.ellie's favorite..once gary turned to the bottle and allowed jr to bully him n run him off southfork...jock no longer had any respect for him n viewed him as a weak mama's boy.....bobby was always jock's favorite(and bobby knew it)...jock did not appreciate bobby confronting him in public about the $10million he took from ewing oil...but he respected bobby for standing up to him which Jr wld have neverdone...while you got the sense that jock was hard driving old boy that wld destroy his enemie without a 2nd tthought...he was never a womanizer. dallas in its early seasons was a great...once jock died they seem to never recover...by season 8 it was a total snoozefest and by season 14 i think they had about 10viewers..

JR might´ve been the villain of the show but it´s moments like these when we could really feel sorry for him. He was a master manipulator but, when it´s about his father, he was like a harmless little boy being yelled at. He loved his dad but Jock´s shadow would always haunt him even dead. That´s what makes great villains: when they have greys which help audiences to sympathize with them.
Jock Ewing was tough but he always loved his family--Miss Ellie, JR, Bobby, Sue Ellen, Pam, Lucy, Ray, and Donna. He was a much better patriarch (who showed unconditional love) than DYNASTY's Blake Carrington.
I believe J.R. wouldn't be what he was as a adult if his father and mother didn't favored Bobby and Gary over him. Parental Favoritism can very hurtful.
Even the Bible shows the damage in families that child favouritism can cause i.e. Abraham favoured Isaac over Ishmael and then Issac went on to favour Esau over Jacob but their mother, Rebekah, favoured Jacob. Then Jacob favoured Joseph over all his other sons.
The difference is J.R. and Jock were ruthless in business, but Jock was a family man, J.R. never was, even though in later seasons he regretted not holding his family together. That's the one thing he never learned from Jock.
Did you ever watch Dallas: The Early Years? Jock is Not a villain. That movie tells the history very well. Digger was responsible for his own downfall. Jock told Digger, "You've been talking and talking about Ellie Southworth, for once you're telling the truth." Jock poured all Digger's booze down the sink and told him he would help him get sober. "But if you manage to screw it up again Digger Barnes, she's mine." Of course, Digger messed it up again.

Bobby had Jock's Love "Unconditionally" while JR felt his Father could only love him if he bought in Big Business Deals. He even admitted to Bobby in Episode 2 when it was a Five Part Miniseries that Daddy wasn't an easy man to work for.
I always believed Jock loved his boys he loved JR for his business sense and his cruel business man technique. He loved Bobby because Bobby was hot headed and quick tempered and didn’t mind roughing you up if you took Bobby there. That reminded Jock of his roughneck wild catting days. So he loved Bobby for that. Gary he couldn’t connect Gary to him in no way not roughing it up or his cruel business tactics. Which to Jock Gary was weak. He felt Miss Ellie had her influence on Gary too much.
Great scene that's not really about Sue Ellen, it's about JR and why he does the things he does. Nothing JR did was ever good enough for Jock and he knew it was always only a matter of time before Jock, the man he worshipped, was going to come down on him again. Even when Jock was long dead, JR could still feel and hear Jock's pressure and disappointment..
Jock was indeed a hard man for a tough character for Bobby to often felt the pressure too despite being more favorable to Jock. It was not always about J.R. as far as what Jock wanted out of him to just wanted nothing but the best from both sons he knew to count on. J.R. was far from a disappointment for a son and a man to really becoming the oil tycoon he was keeping the family business afloat even for a scoundrel. Who wouldn't be really. If it were any son for Jock to looked down on for a disappointment. It was obviously Gary to couldn't measure up to Jock's expectations in raising to become strong men with strong egos to boot.
Jock was a moral man at the end of it all, constantly keeping JR in check. He had a sense when JR was doing something wrong. It wasn't about pressuring JR at all.
John Wayne was the original choice to play Jock, but he turned the role down as he was dying from cancer. He recommended his good friend Jim Davis for the role.

When watching the show I always thought Jock was the epitome of a man's man and that JR was the son most like him. There is a scene where Elly is reminiscing about her boys. She said Jock took over raising JR when Gary was born. Jock said he would make JR a man's man.
Vito Corleone once infamously said... "A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man." implying it towards his own oldest son, who, like J.R., was an overly ambitious philanderer. I used to say "If the Corleones were oil barons, they'd be the Ewings."

Jock at times was abundle of contradictions. He tells JR to stay out of Bobby & Pam's Business when Jenna Wade #1 came back to Dallas, Texas yet he tells JR to take care of Sue Ellen. I think he was more obsessed with having a Grandson & Heir than Sue Ellen's wellbeing. Also when that Episode took place it was JR's silent way of saying "You Made Sure I Didn't Marry Who I Really Wanted, So Don't Tell Me About Interfering".
To a degree I can understand how frustrated JR is with Jock at times. I've always felt that Jock was harder on JR because of how Gary turned out. Looking back, I would have loved for Gary & Jock to have a One On One talk. Jock "apologizes" for being so hard on Gary because he reminded him so much of Arthur Southworth (His Maternal Grandfather) and his Uncle Garrison whom he felt was a "Loser" for not staying to help Miss Ellie save The Southfork.

Jock knew about J.R.'s extramarital affairs as well; he pointed it out to him on the episode that Sue-Ellen was giving birth to John Ross, when he said to him, "I never denied you boys of having a good time, hell, I used to have fun myself from time to time". The parents looked to other way most of the time to J.R.'s mishaps.
I think Jock was harsh here. You can see the great acting from Larry Hagman when Jock critises JR for being a bad husband. I mean there was never any pleasing Jock. JR ran the company well and for him to do this he had to pull long days. Somthing had to give and it was his marriage.
JR was always the alpha male in the room except when his Daddy was there. JR never gave his daddy any sass and when Jock spoke to him regarding the family, JR listened (doesn’t mean he did the right thing lol) he didn’t start raising his voice and storming out the way Bobby always did when he didn’t agree with Jock. Throughout all the years on CZcams, nearly every fan comment was that they loved the scenes between JR and Jock because of JR’s love for his father. We’re so used to JR going after Everyone that it was heartwarming to see that the meanest man in television history, had a soft spot for his parents and son.
The interaction between Jock and JR notwithstanding, my favorite part of this scene might be that the family portrait in the background is actually the 1978 cast publicity photo put out by CBS.

Something like that. That was when Three Piece Suits were popular. I remember seeing a lot of them on The Daytime Shows like Another World. They are trying to make a Comeback but they aren't as stylish as they once were. It's probably early Summer and during this time of the Year people wear light color clothing.
You can tell that Hagman's wardrobe took a big step up in the next season. By the end of this season, it became clear that Hagman was the star of the show. So maybe that's was the reason. Also, the furniture and props improved in that next season. In the Jock Ewing heart attack episode, you could tell that Lorimar and CBS were not investing much in the show. All that changed the following season.

Most people confuse whining with expressing frustration. Whining is more incessant and constant whereas being frustrated is a momentary thing. I'm not condoning J.R.'s abuse of Sue Ellen but I can also understand his frustration with Jock.

Jock always favored Bobby but Jock had more one on one great moments with JR. Jock spoiled Bobby and his scenes were never intense like with JR. Jock may have favored Bobby but it was JR whom he raised to be a mans man like himself and taught him everything JR needed to know about the oil business and gave him the fever for big business. Jock basically spoiled Bobby by letting him become a playboy type and basically bringing him into Ewing oil to distribute the three B's. Booze Broads and Booty (bribing political figures for the company) while JR learned from the bottom up. It was JR that Jock put in his chair to run the company when he retired and knew that JR was as serious about Ewing oil as Jock was.
You are very correct. Jock may have loved Bobby the most but he knew JR loved Ewing Oil as much as he did and was willing to do anything to keep it on top. Such a shame Jim Davis died, the show would've been so much better for many years with Jock instead of that hot tempered, buck toothed, Clayton Farlow.

In fact during Summers he worked as A Clerk and didn't get any special treatment from "Daddy". He got "his" through hard work where Bobby got his handed to him. Joc favored Bobby but nobody could never be a successful businessman as JR was that's why he was hard on Jr to make Jr a hard man to do what he needed to do to run that company and be successful
I think that Jock & JR inadverdently made a mistake when they talked "Business" at The Cocktail Hour. Even after their Conversation Jock knew deep in his heart that it was a waste of time because JR always did what "He" wanted no matter what the price and who got hurt. It would have been heavier if JR had said "Remember Daddy, I was always part of Ewing Oil in some ways than Bobby or even Gary were and you made it clear that I never got special treatment because I was your Son."
J.R. wasn't really good at being tender or communicating with SE. He just verbally was mean & mocked her. I don't think Jock would have talked to Miss. Ellie like that. He tried a bit after the baby, but SE was recovering from postpartum depression and he hooked up with her sister so she moved onto Dusty.

JR might´ve been the villain of the show but it´s moments like these when we could really feel sorry for him. He was a master manipulator but, when it´s about his father, he was like a harmless little boy being yelled at. He loved his dad but Jock´s shadow would always haunt him even dead. That´s what makes great villains: when they have greys which help audiences to sympathize with them.
I like how JR addresses Jock "Sir".
Jock Ewing was tough but he always loved his family--Miss Ellie, JR, Bobby, Sue Ellen, Pam, Lucy, Ray, and Donna. He was a much better patriarch (who showed unconditional love) than DYNASTY's Blake Carrington.

Even if Jock was a villain - before J.R. ever was (which was hereditary), he had a lot of redeeming qualities --- ex. the love of his children.
The difference is J.R. and Jock were ruthless in business, but Jock was a family man, J.R. never was, even though in later seasons he regretted not holding his family together. That's the one thing he never learned from Jock.
Did you ever watch Dallas: The Early Years? Jock is Not a villain. That movie tells the history very well. Digger was responsible for his own downfall. Jock told Digger, "You've been talking and talking about Ellie Southworth, for once you're telling the truth." Jock poured all Digger's booze down the sink and told him he would help him get sober. "But if you manage to screw it up again Digger Barnes, she's mine." Of course, Digger messed it up again.

Bobby had Jock's Love "Unconditionally" while JR felt his Father could only love him if he bought in Big Business Deals. He even admitted to Bobby in Episode 2 when it was a Five Part Miniseries that Daddy wasn't an easy man to work for.

I always believed Jock loved his boys he loved JR for his business sense and his cruel business man technique. He loved Bobby because Bobby was hot headed and quick tempered and didn’t mind roughing you up if you took Bobby there. That reminded Jock of his roughneck wild catting days. So he loved Bobby for that. Gary he couldn’t connect Gary to him in no way not roughing it up or his cruel business tactics. Which to Jock Gary was weak. He felt Miss Ellie had her influence on Gary too much.
Great scene that's not really about Sue Ellen, it's about JR and why he does the things he does. Nothing JR did was ever good enough for Jock and he knew it was always only a matter of time before Jock, the man he worshipped, was going to come down on him again. Even when Jock was long dead, JR could still feel and hear Jock's pressure and disappointment..
Jock was indeed a hard man for a tough character for Bobby to often felt the pressure too despite being more favorable to Jock. It was not always about J.R. as far as what Jock wanted out of him to just wanted nothing but the best from both sons he knew to count on. J.R. was far from a disappointment for a son and a man to really becoming the oil tycoon he was keeping the family business afloat even for a scoundrel. Who wouldn't be really. If it were any son for Jock to looked down on for a disappointment. It was obviously Gary to couldn't measure up to Jock's expectations in raising to become strong men with strong egos to boot.
Jock was a moral man at the end of it all, constantly keeping JR in check. He had a sense when JR was doing something wrong. It wasn't about pressuring JR at all.
On "Dallas," JR was close to Jock and had worshipped him, though his best wasn't good enough, in real-life, Jim Davis was Larry's idol!

John Wayne was the original choice to play Jock, but he turned the role down as he was dying from cancer. He recommended his good friend Jim Davis for the role.

When watching the show I always thought Jock was the epitome of a man's man and that JR was the son most like him. There is a scene where Elly is reminiscing about her boys. She said Jock took over raising JR when Gary was born. Jock said he would make JR a man's man.

Jock at times was abundle of contradictions. He tells JR to stay out of Bobby & Pam's Business when Jenna Wade #1 came back to Dallas, Texas yet he tells JR to take care of Sue Ellen. I think he was more obsessed with having a Grandson & Heir than Sue Ellen's wellbeing. Also when that Episode took place it was JR's silent way of saying "You Made Sure I Didn't Marry Who I Really Wanted, So Don't Tell Me About Interfering".
I'm surprised that J.R didn't become an alcoholic the way he puts away that booze every time he takes a drink on Dallas.
But if you watch close he only takes one or two sips and he puts it down and leaves the room or patio or what have you.

To a degree I can understand how frustrated JR is with Jock at times. I've always felt that Jock was harder on JR because of how Gary turned out. Looking back, I would have loved for Gary & Jock to have a One On One talk. Jock "apologizes" for being so hard on Gary because he reminded him so much of Arthur Southworth (His Maternal Grandfather) and his Uncle Garrison whom he felt was a "Loser" for not staying to help Miss Ellie save The Southfork.
Gary WAS a loser, while JR was the ultimate winner.

I think Josh had that talk with JR because he knew how sick Sue Ellen was and could relate because he took care of his first wife Amanda and still did even after he married Miss Ellie he took his responsibilities very seriously.
its interesting that miss.ellie knew of jr.'s affairs with other women but someone' as shrewd n savvy has jock did not seem to know....i guess it is because women are much more intuitive than men...
Jock knew about J.R.'s extramarital affairs as well; he pointed it out to him on the episode that Sue-Ellen was giving birth to John Ross, when he said to him, "I never denied you boys of having a good time, hell, I used to have fun myself from time to time". The parents looked to other way most of the time to J.R.'s mishaps.

I think Jock was harsh here. You can see the great acting from Larry Hagman when Jock critises JR for being a bad husband. I mean there was never any pleasing Jock. JR ran the company well and for him to do this he had to pull long days. Somthing had to give and it was his marriage.
But he ended up in other women's bed at the end of the night instead of home with his wife
Jock was actually a horrible father. Especially to JR. I think he pushed JR over the edge many years before Dallas appeared.
Of course JR tries to make the conversation about Cliff Barnes.
JR was always the alpha male in the room except when his Daddy was there. JR never gave his daddy any sass and when Jock spoke to him regarding the family, JR listened (doesn’t mean he did the right thing lol) he didn’t start raising his voice and storming out the way Bobby always did when he didn’t agree with Jock. Throughout all the years on CZcams, nearly every fan comment was that they loved the scenes between JR and Jock because of JR’s love for his father. We’re so used to JR going after Everyone that it was heartwarming to see that the meanest man in television history, had a soft spot for his parents and son.
The interaction between Jock and JR notwithstanding, my favorite part of this scene might be that the family portrait in the background is actually the 1978 cast publicity photo put out by CBS.

Something like that. That was when Three Piece Suits were popular. I remember seeing a lot of them on The Daytime Shows like Another World. They are trying to make a Comeback but they aren't as stylish as they once were. It's probably early Summer and during this time of the Year people wear light color clothing.

You can tell that Hagman's wardrobe took a big step up in the next season. By the end of this season, it became clear that Hagman was the star of the show. So maybe that's was the reason. Also, the furniture and props improved in that next season. In the Jock Ewing heart attack episode, you could tell that Lorimar and CBS were not investing much in the show. All that changed the following season.

Dallas as a whole was a great series. But the early episodes with Jim Davis (Jock) were my favorites. RIP Jim, Barbara (Miss Ellie) and Larry (JR).

That's what J.R. is, whining how he has "tried to always please his daddy and become what he wanted", that's pretty sad isn't it? The painting on the wall is interesting: JR stands in the middle, Jock is behind him and most notably Ellie and Bobby are absent from the limelight!
Most people confuse whining with expressing frustration. Whining is more incessant and constant whereas being frustrated is a momentary thing. I'm not condoning J.R.'s abuse of Sue Ellen but I can also understand his frustration with Jock.

This was filmed in early 1979, Jim didn’t start getting sick until late 1980. Even the Texas scenes filmed in the summer of 1980, he was fine.

Jock always favored Bobby but Jock had more one on one great moments with JR. Jock spoiled Bobby and his scenes were never intense like with JR. Jock may have favored Bobby but it was JR whom he raised to be a mans man like himself and taught him everything JR needed to know about the oil business and gave him the fever for big business. Jock basically spoiled Bobby by letting him become a playboy type and basically bringing him into Ewing oil to distribute the three B's. Booze Broads and Booty (bribing political figures for the company) while JR learned from the bottom up. It was JR that Jock put in his chair to run the company when he retired and knew that JR was as serious about Ewing oil as Jock was.
You are very correct. Jock may have loved Bobby the most but he knew JR loved Ewing Oil as much as he did and was willing to do anything to keep it on top. Such a shame Jim Davis died, the show would've been so much better for many years with Jock instead of that hot tempered, buck toothed, Clayton Farlow.
Yes, but Jock dangled his love in front of JR where Bobby had it unconditionally. JR worked at Ewing Oil from the time he was a Little Boy. In fact during Summers he worked as A Clerk and didn't get any special treatment from "Daddy". He got "his" through hard work where Bobby got his handed to him. I was so angry when JR "read" Bobby back in the day but he was right on about how hard he worked for his.
Joc favored Bobby but nobody could never be a successful businessman as JR was that's why he was hard on Jr to make Jr a hard man to do what he needed to do to run that company and be successful

I think that Jock & JR inadverdently made a mistake when they talked "Business" at The Cocktail Hour. Even after their Conversation Jock knew deep in his heart that it was a waste of time because JR always did what "He" wanted no matter what the price and who got hurt. It would have been heavier if JR had said "Remember Daddy, I was always part of Ewing Oil in some ways than Bobby or even Gary were and you made it clear that I never got special treatment because I was your Son."
When Jock Ewing tells JR Ewing to: "sit down because I want to talk to you" I know for a fact that it is lecture time between father and son.

J.R. wasn't really good at being tender or communicating with SE. He just verbally was mean & mocked her. I don't think Jock would have talked to Miss. Ellie like that. He tried a bit after the baby, but SE was recovering from postpartum depression and he hooked up with her sister so she moved onto Dusty.
