JR was witty, charismatic and could be quite likeable if you were inside with him, but a scene like this reminds you what a wretched cruel man he could be. It's actually quite a difficult scene to watch. Arguably the last great season of Dallas.

He made JR charming and surprisingly likeable much of the time. Despite all the evil things he did. Jim Bowie in real life was the same way. He did some truly horrible things. Womanizer, slave trader being just two examples. Yet, he was so charming that the very same people who hated what he did, usually spoke very fondly of the man himself.

He never does because he doesn't want any trouble to fall on Sly's brother, not that he has ever met the brother, but he knows how hurt Sly would have been. Poor Cliff. I was re-watching the early seasons recently and Cliff is actually charming, black hair, great smile, a noble figure, comes off as a John/Robert Kennedy type a charismatic guy just wanting to do good things, like the anti-JR. The sort that walks into a room and people notice him and think he has a bright future. And you look at him there, he's a shell of a man, grey hair, talks in a unclassy manner, half drunk. He was dragged into a war that is eating him alive. Who knew that the guy from Season 1 would become that.

J.R. got so much perverse pleasure from making Cliff's life miserable that, if you gave him a choice between (a) having hot, steamy sex with Miss America, and (b) seeing the look of horror on Cliff's face upon realizing he had been out-smarted yet again, he'd choose the latter.
