this feels like a weird one to question "why no return?" because it felt like a one game gimmick for how specific it was.
Yeah I agree, pretty much all of the hubs have been reduced to cameos and everyone's fine with that. It's not really missing.
There also hasn’t been (outside Sparks of Hope) a Mario game based around space where its use would make much sense.
Last Spotted at Super Nintendo World's Yoshi's Island Adventure ride in a small window. Nintendo seriously keeps neglecting Super Mario Galaxy 2

I always loved Starship Mario. I thought it was such a cool and unique hub. Seeing it develop and gain more residents as you progressed through the game was so satisfying, and I just loved the atmosphere. I would love to see it return some day. Let us never give up hope. Galaxy 2 still deserves to be brought back! Justice for SMG2!
The moon from Mario Odyssey would have been the perfect level to feature a small cameo from starship Mario.
Starship Mario was likely further out in the universe at the time.

Pauline went missing in action in 2015, but she had the best return of any character I know of, so she’s no longer missing

First Galaxy 2 not being on 3D All-Stars, now it turns out Starship Mario rarely appears in various Mario games?! Ok… NOW Nintendo really wants to pretend Galaxy 2 doesn’t exist.
I’d like to see both the Comet Observatory, Starship Mario, and the Odyssey in the same game: the observatory can travel to different planets that the Odyssey can explore, as well as launch Mario to distant galaxy style levels, and Starship Mario can travel to nearby galaxy levels.
I feel that would be too redundant. Just one ship is enough.

Well, Nintendo almost always likes to do something new with Mario.
It's in his garage with all his other vehicles over the years, like the big boot
I feel like Starship Mario has some missed potential. I like some of the ideas it has going for it like being a planetoid with gravity, connecting to a Starshroom with the Warp Pad, and recruiting characters from the galaxies you visit. Though the characters you recruit don't react to the new places you explore. They just offer the same advice over and over again. And Starship Mario could've been expanded to feel more like a home away from home. Those two empty rooms with the gambling lumas could easily be replaced with a bedroom or kitchen.
What ever happened to the red Kameks with propellers on their heads. In the Yoshi games
They appeared in Super Mario Party and LEGO Mario. But yeah they rarely appear, they didn't even appear in Yoshi's Woolly World or Yoshi's Crafted World
I have always wondered what galaxies Mario would visit if Starship Mario went left instead of right. A tropical jungle galaxy, a magical clocktower, a Japanese zen garden, or the interior of a supermassive house? What about a M. C. Escher inspired galaxy with upside down stairs and vertical hallways?

The "Hub Worlds" are a big part of the Super Mario series. But Starship Mario is tied to Super Mario Galaxy 2 which is technically a Super Mario Galaxy game not a Super Mario game. Plus SMG2 doesn't play like the previous Super Mario games so that might suggest a difference in importance of Starship Mario.

Actually Super Mario Galaxy 2 is canon. The ending resulted in the creation of the reboot Marioverse. You know like New Yoshi Island, New Super Mario Bris., ect.) Therefore making it canon.
There is no Mario canon!
@oscarvaldovinos6597 It takes place in an alternative universe that happened because of Galaxy 1's ending, so in a way, it's kinda canon.
These MIA videos are very pointless when they are in relation to things to a very specific game (in this case Galaxy 1 & 2). Or the previous one about Shadow Mario, who’s just a Browser Jr. in disguise specifically in Sunshine. So come on guys…!
This, in my opinion, is a huge downgrade from the Comet Observatory.

Kinda crazy how you make a missing in action video based on Mario focusing on his shadow doppelgänger, only to make another one to talk about his head shaped hub world 2 weeks later. And I agree. I miss starship Mario. That’s a probably significant reason I enjoy the 2nd Mario galaxy over the first.

while i don't miss it that much as it was a downgrade to the comet observatory/lubba especially to rosalina(wish her being playable had been a 100% reward for that brutal endgame.) do remember when starship mario was just going to be a planet mario went through in the trailer & do like alongside it's appearance in fortune street/super nintendo world and smash bros.
if a future mario movie sequel had the bros. go into space(which i'm 100% with how it's inevitable rosalina will show up.)like if it was the starship mario being how they traveled with the bros. bantering about it's look.
Okay, so tell me. What would be the point of unlocking Rosalina as a playable character? I mean, you’ve finally 100%ed the game and for literally no reason Rosalina becomes a playable character. What’s the point of that? You’re not going to go back and play the game again just because you unlocked her. How would that work anyway? You can’t play as her because;
1. She wouldn’t have a move set yet, so Nintendo can’t think of any unique features
2. Rosalina is meant to have been kidnapped by Bowser in Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor (or Generator). You can’t have two Rosalina’s.

I believe the Starship Mario will return when Super Mario Galaxy 2 is coming to Nintendo Switch as a Port/Remake if it's never happening. I hope Super Mario Galaxy 2 coming to Switch in someday. 😢❤

A missing in action that I'm thankful with its disappearance. Massive downgrade from the Comet Observatory and the Odyssey essentially replaces it.
You could do a Missing in Action for the entirety of Super Mario Galaxy 2 itself.

The starship was the reason I quit paying this game after a few levels. It was a terrible hub world and made the game feel more like 2d mario than 3d.
