      @@heavymetal11 Neither TikTok nor its CEO are legally obligated to hand over user data as the Chinese government itself stated yesterday. China's laws don't apply to companies that operate outside its jurisdiction. TikTok isn't even majority-owned by Bytedance.
      The fact is that US lawmakers are too dumb to read a map, much less understand how technology works as is evident from the hearings. They came with a preconceived bias of the platform and already had a predetermined decision on a ban. They were not there to be convinced. Nope those lawmakers are not actually concerned about data security. Ironically our data would be more secure with TikTok than with other tech companies like FB that don't have independent data gatekeepers or monitoring of source code. With all that in mind, a ban would never pass in the Supreme Court as it would then fall under the 1st Amendment.

      @asleepawake3645 Před rokem +27

      @@ibot2157 , MNCs are international businesses, so different people in different countries work on data from multiple countries. Normally there are data administrators ( not to be confused with database administrators ) who set company policy on data handling. Someone, let's say in India, would have to work on the data of US customers, but the policy states that the data is only used for very specific purposes, for example, troubleshooting. If the employee uses it for something else, for example, research, it is not allowed, and employees can get fired for violating data policy. So strong MNCs need a strong data policy, not just because of privacy, but because data is basically the lifeblood of compabies today. America was the one who pioneered offshoring IT operations to India, so yes, as an example, almost every American company hands over local data to other countries ( or any other country it operates in ) But somehow when it comes to China, it suddenly becomes a security issue and everyone of Chinese ethnicity suddenly becomes a spy for the CCP. Just like the way republicans handled researchers in US universities. So in short, yeah, thanks to cloud and hyperconnectivity, your data is shared because it's already in your user agreement whenever you bought your phone, dowblnload and install an app, or use a computer at work. Want your data to remain private? Remain living in the jungle book called trumpism, at least you won't bother civilization.

As for India being an offshoring destination, India is a divided democracy with western-ish legal system atleast the constitution has all their buzzwords and IP laws arent(defacto) stacked against foreign companies like its in china(do you really wanna talk about that ?). Before airin out idiotic self righteous grievances a little bit of introspection would be nice. As stupid as americans are they have a genuine concern here

      getting back to point that cloud computing you were talking about actually relies on access to cheap land, low operatin costs, reliable power supply and proximity to a end consumers to reduce latency, when the company gets to be on the right side of a rulin govt of country with huge market, then thats a plus America has all off those advantages abd more. Also If Americans treated foreign companies like China treats them I would LOVE to see the outcome. Chinese employees have a history of engaging in industrial espionage this is a known quantity. French do it, Isrealis do it even the Japanese did it. But all these govts are Either neutral to American interests or support it. China does not So why should America reciprocate by Allowing china to erode its advantage by doing nothing.

      Why is there so many posters arguing it is a valid question when it is very obviously a loaded questuon? A valid question tries to be impartial. Crensshaw is a republican politician edicated in propaganda, not ethical journalism. Stwphem Colbert would probably get more out of interviewing Chew than Crenshaw ever could spreading false narratives about tiktok.

      😱 so the grilling was all a veiled castigation to Singapore? Never thought of it, but wouldn't be surprising given how the republican campaign is all about getting the racist vote.

    Lol so what if he’s Singaporean? The question is whether TikTok had to submit to the CCP. It doesn’t matter whether the CEO is Singaporean. But then again, even if that happened, it’s bound by secrecy, so asking the question will yield no answer.
    The question is lame, the answer is pointless and people pointing out that he’s Singaporean completely missed the point.

    The Singapore and Chinese government have an agreement between them about their nations defense. Good for Crenshaw! He did exactly what he's been elected to do.
