    To clear things up.
Jimi Hendrix initially used to play what was called a "Vox Crybaby", and it was made in Italy during the 60's by a company named JEN. In the late 60's, American company called Thomas Organ copied the design using different components (probably due to what was available in the U.S. at that time) and named the pedal "Crybaby". Jimi Hendrix is noted to have played both models, with Thomas Organ Crybaby being used on his late recording such as the Band of Gypsies. As both companies failed to register trademark to the name "Crybaby", in mid 70's Jim Dunlop bought the rights to the design, and therefore the name which is still in their line of products to date. Both Vox and Dunlop have marketed their retail pedals as a classic, original recreation of the 60's wah pedal, but all of the current day models paled in comparison to the originals. Since the early 90's, Dunlop claimed to have reproduced the original specs of Jimi's own Crybaby, although all of their attempts to recreate the pedal proved to have little to no similarities to either of the two original 60's designs.

Vox seems to be much wider of a sweep and more versatile, but there's just something I like about that Cry Baby tone. It's rich, it's full, it's got a very specific character. Can't say which I prefer, but I do already have a v847, so if I just get both, I could have the best of both worlds.

As an analogy, consider each as pedal as the same individual vocalist singing into a mic... to MY ear(opinion), the Crybaby sounds like the vocalist is singing quietly but with the volume being amplified electronically. The Vox sounds like the vocalist singing loudly with little volume amplification, a more "diaphragmatic" or natural sound.

Both pedals are not true bypass and they are known to be tone (treble) sucking because of a "not so stellar" input buffer. In this video the Vox might sound more open (or trebly) because the effected sound doesn't go through a treble sucking buffer. When the Crybaby is on, instead, the effected sound goes trough the Vox treble sucking input buffer. If you reverse the pedal chain (putting the Vox before the Crybaby), you might get a totally different result. You really need an effect bypass loop (or mod both pedals to true bypass) to be able to do a fair comparison.

In February of 1967, Thomas Organ released the wah pedal to the public. At first, the device was marketed as the “Clyde McCoy,” named after a jazz trumpeter who extensively used a mute to create a “wah-wah” effect in the 1920s.

  • @CalebePriester
    @CalebePriester Před 5 lety +1

Vox's inductor clips the guitar signal asymmetrically, however the Dunlop's inductor doesn't, it has symmetrical clipping.
Think about diode clipping, you can use the same diodes to make the signal clip symmetrically or you can use different diodes to clip the signal asymmetrically.
"I saw no differences at first with tiny sine wave drives. It wasn't until I turned the generator up that differences appeared. The Crybaby inductor performed exactly as I would have expected it to. That is, it had an output that was essentially a pure sine wave right up until the sine was big enough or lowe enough in frequency to start it into the first touches of saturation. When that started, I got precisely what theory predicts: appearance of the third harmonic of the dirve waveform, followed by fifth, and finally a touch of seventh when I really pushed it. However, when I did the same to the Fasel inductor, the onset of saturation-generated harmonics happened a bit sooner, and a second harmonic appeared with the third! As I turned the drive up, the fourth rose with the fifth, and I never got a seventh harmonic. The inductor, all by itself was clipping asymmetrically.

After years of crybaby’s of different types I like the vox the best. The vox doesn’t choke out when you lean it back like the crybaby does and you don’t have to lean the vox all the way forward to achieve a good sweep. I can play most of a solo with 75% of it and It goes all the way down when you’re hitting the right notes. Crybaby’s just don’t hit that spot for me on the high bends like a vox does. The vox is superior in every department.

+soh loh Came here for the exact same reason. I just got the Vox a few days ago without really thinking about trying out the Crybaby as everyone talks shit about them...low and behold I find out one of my favorite guitarists/tones has always used a Crybaby and not a Vox as previously thought by the majority of people..now I find this video and actually thought the same thing you did about the Vox being dead-ish/flat/decayed compared to the Crybaby...I'm mad about it.
Somebody, please convince both of us. kthks.

      Tyler McClanahan
i actually gave up on deciding for now and picked up tremonti's sig wah pedal which doesnt have a mechanical sweep and is prob the most transparent ive heard... however sometime soon i plan to pick up a crybaby because i think its going to be more fun to tweak nobs inside the thing to my own preferences like all the greats did.
i think the vox is going to be less intrusive and easier to get the hang of wah pedal techniques maybe but i wouldnt be disheartened at not having a crybaby right now, its all about knowing what your particular pedal has to offer i suppose
and using that to your advantage
also dont quote me on this but i think crybabies are a little more prone to damage

having them hooked up into eachother like that doesnt do much for a fair comparison, since they both have quite alot of tone suck even bypassed. Using a true bypass looper or just demoing them seperately and then mixing the clips together would be a fair comparison.

Take the Vox apart & adjust the shaft to the potentiometer, taking a little treble off & they are exactly the same pedal.

I love VOX, I will get one tomorrow. Sounds better than Dunlop to me. I am not big fan of Cry Baby pedals, but those two pedals sound very similar. To me, VOX is slightly better, sounds better on clean sound and I love his nice, sweet sound better than on other one.

I have a Vox V845 and to me it misses full range tone, it goes to muted to open too quick , therefor I need to be very precise with my foot to get the tone I want. I am thinking of getting a Cry Baby instead.

I think I prefer the crybaby. Reason being is that the VOX seems to be a little sharper to listen to and kinda hurts my ears (I'm wearing headphones haha) while the crybaby seems to muffle it a bit, making it easier and smoother to listen to. Just my opinion :)

I use to have a Vox. Several years later I’m back looking for a wah and I’m still undecided but leading towards the Crybaby. Wonder what it would sound like to use both at the same time?

Theres two versions of the vox 847 an older version that uses a yellow fasel inductor and the newer that uses a red fasel inductor. The older one is more vintage/60's sounding wah.

i've owned a crybaby 535Q and i currently use a V847. (not "V847a"). The Crybaby sounds so forced and almost artificial and whiney compared to the vox. From clean to dirty to lead, the V847 sings more naturally than any other Wah I've used.

Virtuoso rock guitarist Buckethead uses a Vox wah pedal with devasting results, IMHO he meets and exceeds what Hendrix accomplished - PLAYLIST with 23 examples: czcams.com/play/PLVtE11FxKtYmsoV01VntEHt-SezzIt1E3.html

Listening while running the audio through my home stereo set (giving me room acoustics with real speakers; no headphones) I can't really hear a distinct difference between the two most of the times. Except in the last bit with the pinch harmonics/flageolet tones: there seems to be just a slight "edge" or output peak with the VOX at a certain point of the pedal's position whereas this isn't noticeable to me with the Crybaby which sweeps through the frequency spectrum more evenly to my ears.
As I have an old Colorsound Wah from the 70s which might qualify for "vintage" but tends to be very bright generally and also seems to "push" the output at a certain position (thus causing some distortion for just those frequencies) - which is actually quite annoying - I'd possibly go for the Crybaby, if I were to judge from this vid.
When giving a VOX and a Crybaby a side by side try in a music store recently, though, I had the impression of the VOX being just a little bit darker and overall a bit more "pleasant". Although that one was a 845 instead of this 847. But that VOX had way more mechanical "creaking" than the Crybaby - but that might be helped with a few drops of oil at the bearings, I guess...
