Finally! I started building my own house. Pt1- foundations and concrete slab

  • Finally the project I've been waiting for years, my house. I'l be filming the whole process from the start to finish and in this first episode of the series you can see the steps from marking the ground to concrete slab pour. I thought about revealing the 3d renders of it but I think I'ts better to see it going up bit by bit:)
    The house itself will be constructed in combination of 3 main materials, concrete, thermo block bricks and glulam wood. hopefully it will be very energy efficient and also look nice:) I don't know how many episodes there will be but I'l try to post as often as possible.
    I started by marking a contour where the top layer of 20-30 cm of surface soil should be removed. After that, my fiancee and I again marked the guide lines where foundations should be dug. Foundation trenches were then filled with 30 cm of ground up gravel and compacted. Compaction test is done afterwards to make sure the base is compacted enough. We then made rebar baskets and lowered them into trenches. We also positioned anchors for concrete posts and walls. Sides of footings were lined with hard extruded polystyrene. After the first pour, we trimmed the top 3-4 cm of polystirene into level plane and we made the formwork on top of it for the slab. Space between the footings was also filled with gravel and compacted. On top of it we placed 8cm of xps and polyurethane foam which we covered with plastic membrane. We placed the rebar mesh on top of it and poured the slab..
    I hope you like this first part of this project, many more will follow! Please ask any question in the comments and as always, subscribe for more!:D

      Things are starting to change here slowly, we have more and more customers searching for wooden houses, mostly post and beam, especially after the two earthquakes from last year.. Nothing beats wooden houses in an earthquake. I first planned this house to be mostly wood but after prices exploding, I had to think rationally and redistribute material percentages..

      I depends on where the house is situated and also the type of structure that goes on the foundations. Concrete and thermo block is quite heavy so it needs heavy footings. We also live in a really seismic active area. there were two earthquakes last year that did a lot of damage, especially in the old city centers so the code is quite rigorous. We still wait for the big earthquake that happens every century or so that leveled Zagreb to the ground last time 100 years ago. Better to be safe than sorry :)

      It's basically used to measure the comapction of the soil - the one in the video is used to measure the dynamic elastic modulus which can be directly corelated with soil stiffness so that you can be sure that soil was compacted enough to do concrete work. So in a way yes, it measures soil density.

    You do such beautiful work! I am really looking forward to seeing this home emerge from the construction. Also, it's great to see your fiance working on the house as well; there's nothing that works better than this kind of work on a big project to solidify a relationship.
    A question: did you consider putting in a basement? Here in southern California, where land is very expensive, people build swimming pools all the time, but hardly anyone puts in basements. In the midwestern U.S., land is much less expensive, and people gain much more usable space in their homes by putting in basements all the time (counterintuitive, I know). Is there much frost and ground-heave in Croatia?
    Another question: Your architecture is excellent, but it looks like you situated the house to be parallel to other houses and the street. Did you have a chance to consider sight lines to hills, water, etc., or did lot line restrictions motivate your layout?
    Thanks for posting!

      Hello steve! Glad you like it! Yes I love working on this project with my fiancee, there is something special in building our home together.:) Here some houses have basements but most don't. We both grew up in houses without basements so we honestly didn't even consider it. I know a few people that have basement's and they have problems with water. They have older houses though and water insulation technology have gone along way since then but we just don't feel we have a need for it. We positioned the house so we have optimal sun trajectory during the year to heath the house thru glass panels during the winter months and to keep it in shade during summer. we will try to achieve it with a large roof overhang on the south side.

    Hi, Great job you did there with your wife! I'm Amazed on how skillful you both are. Just q quick questing assuming you are building in Croatia. What is the code for foundation depth there? I saw geologic engineer did tested the pressure of the surface after digging but I'm curious if there is any strict code there or you need to pass the geological tests only. I'm building a house here in Bulgaria and the constructor wanted me to go 1.4m depth without any geological tests or smth since he wanted to be on the safe side which I found fine. Had to ask the contractor company that do the initial job to dig deeper then the initial project and we added some bottom concrete to fill the 40cm deeper that the constructor required. I'm just curious how things goes in Croatia on foundation topic since we have similar climate zone in Europe.

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, Thank you! Here you have to go below the freezing depth, which is 90 cm here if I remember correctly. When all the site work will be completed, the depth of these foundations will be around one meter deep. In the project, i had a choice to add some bottom concrete or 30 cm of compacted gravel underneath the foundation.

    Fascinating build of your foundation in Croatia - very well engineered. I look forward to watching the build. I'm curious about the spread of building techniques from one country to another. For example, would your local building control officer ever agree to something like FastFoot, that seems widely used in the USA czcams.com/video/okizuEjhbjE/video.html. I'm in the UK, and have not seen it here yet. Just wondering what your take is on something like that? The reason I ask the question is because you had to put a lot of effort in, I'm just curious if something like Fast Foot could speed things up....if acceptable to building control.

      @@iaincrawford5472 well here in Greece it's quite common to dig down around 4 meters and cast a solid foundation in concrete into the bedrock, its quite a dirty and messy process. • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  Před 2 lety +1

      The depth of foundation is given in the project by authorised structural engineering office and in this case I could choose between 30 cm of compacted gravel under the foundations or 10 cm of base concrete, I chose quicker and cheeper method but equaly good. The soil is more and more compacted the deeper you go because of all the pressure from the soil above it. It's better to dig a bit deeper to reach more compacted layer and change the clay with material with far better properties than to stay shallow. Clay is like dough when wet, gravel and rock is not..
