  • The palatal expander can also be used in adults who have a narrow palate. Here we show the MARPE technique, one of the best known.
    00:00 Introduction:
MARPE is the name of a rapid palate expansion technique. We show how it is done in this 3d video of the Pardiñas Dental Medical Clinic (j.mp/cPardinas) .
00:04 When is the MARPE technique used?
There are cases in which the patient has a very narrow maxilla or palate, which can cause a malocclusion with all the problems derived from it. To correct this problem, it is possible to resort to a technique called MARPE, with which an expansion of the palate can be achieved by disjunction of the palatine bone through its median suture.
00:28 What device is used to expand the palate?
For this, there are various devices that are anchored to the palate, and with which the patient, through small daily activations, generates an expansion movement in this device, causing the palate to widen little by little. Once the planned expansion has been achieved, new bone will begin to form in the space created.
00:48 Is it necessary to use orthodontics to correct narrow palates?
This type of technique is normally associated with an orthodontic treatment to correct the malocclusion. The type of the combined orthodontic technique used can be conventional with braces or with clear aligners.

Is it possible to do this without SARPE, I'm turning 21 soon. Is it already too late, or is there any chance if I were to see an orthodontist/oral specialist? If there's alternatives, would you recommend SARPE over the alternatives?

How effective is this for sleep apnea and breathing issues, i have an extremely high/narrow palate and over here in the UK its just dismissed as if it doesnt work at all, ive had septum/turbinate reduction, still really ill and CPAP does nothing, nearly 43 years old!

    • @Dentalk
      @Dentalk  Před 8 měsíci +1

Each case should be analyzed individually. In some cases in combination with an orthodontic treatment it may improve sleep apneas.
Also the type of apneas should be analyzed, it’s not the same an obstructive apnea than a central apnea.
Sometimes it also needs the use of a sleep appliance in the mouth.

I just had the marpe with surgical assist. started with 30 mm inter molar width and now at 34.5 mm and I can tell you my BREATHING IS NIGHT AND DAY. I still have sleep apnea since I have a posterior tongue tie and still choke on my tongue at night. I would suggest starting off doing myofunctional therapy exercises as this will help with your sleep apnea. I have gotten my surgical expansion with dr. coppelson in Los Angeles. Best of luck to you.

yes it can. it's called mandibular synthesis distraction osteogenesis. surgically assisted by cutting midline of mandible and using a distraction device same as marpe. fewer doctors do it, but it's necessary often to match the expansions of the maxilla to achieve proper bite and prevent bruxism from size discrepancy between width of maxilla and mandible.@@Dentalk

@sunflowerstudies8719 U didnt ask me but as someone who has one I think I can answer ur question. First it depends on how bad ur bite is. I had an crossbite and the expander treatment is gonna take me 5 months. Only 1 month was needed for treatment the other 4 months the expander needed to stay in and let my jaw heal and adjust. Later I'm gonna get braces or any other thing that is gonna repair the tooth gab and teeth. Don't know how mich this is gonna take me I'm not a orthodontist and if ur interested to know bc it's important for the process I'm a teenager.

We can’t do that without a proper visit to the clinic.
It’s necessary to have a ct scan, digital models from your mouth, an articulator mounting, pictures etc.
It’s a 1 hour visit to get all the tests, then a few weeks are needed to fully study the case and decide the treatment plan.
