    Hi Joel, watching all your amazing tutorials and finally getting organised after all these years. One questionI have, is, to free up space on my iPhone for shooting video etc, which can be very hungry, and at the same time being connected to the cloud, chewing up storage, what would be the best option for always having plenty of room on the phone? I have been advised to keep all original photos on my iMac.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety +1

      Great question @Russell James and thank you for the kind words!
      Videos, Pictures and Text messages are often the culprit of iPhone storage filling up quickly.
      Video will for sure eat up any cloud storage, no matter who you go with. No matter if you're using iCloud, Google, Microsoft cloud system for Photo storage/syncing, whenever you take a pictures or video it will sync there and also stay locally. If you delete it locally it deletes it in the cloud.
      So if you're not too concerned about having these files on a cloud and you just want to offload them, I'd get a simple flash drive from SanDisk iXpand to plug directly into your iPhone. I'll link it below.
      This flash drive pretty much is just a plug and play way to manually copy files from your iPhone/iPad to the flash drive which then you can safely backup or plug into a computer.

      No as far as attempting to keep everything on the cloud, I would highly recommend to turn on optimizing the storage for the device your on. Specifically for Photos on an iPhone it will be located in the Settings > iCloud > iCloud Photos > "Optimize iPhone Storage". I have another video that will explain this in depth that I will link below, but essentially this allows you to not take up space on your device for items you don't view often.

      Hi @Renea Dooserider! Sorry for the late response as I was out traveling all last week!
      Are the videos you're looking to find within Apple Photos, or are they just on your Mac in general?
      This tutorial is really geared specifically to duplicate photos, however there is another really good App I'd recommend called Gemini 2: The Duplicate Finder. It's created by a company called MacPaw. Here's a link! Check it out!
      macpaw.audw.net/c/2641440/284351/1733
      This can do way more than just analyze photos, it can do pretty much any type of file on your Mac.
      Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety

      Hi @Anne-Marie Andrews!
      I'm happy to hear these videos are helpful!
      So do you have a hard drive that is not working anymore that you're trying to recover lost files from?
      My best advice is to locate all possible photos and get them into one location and weed out the duplicates and verify if truly photos are completely missing.
      Do you have a backup of your computer and hard drives? If you're trying to find missing photos, you would need some reference to search by, either file name, date, location, etc...
      I hope that helps! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and so greatly appreciated!

      @Learnwithjoel  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi @Samer Rustom! Thanks so much for the kind words and support!
      So yes...there are some sorting options when items are in folders in Photos.
      Let's say you have a Folder called Countries and inside it are 10 albums. If you "right click" on the folder, you can choose to Sort > By Name. You can also access this option from the Menu bar under the "View > Sort" when the folder is selected.
      Sounds like you may travel some! Make sure to utilize the Places feature where it puts your photos on a Map!
      Hope this helps!

    HI Joel, Thank you for all your insight.. I have a question for you regarding albums. I saw in the review for Power Photos that if you have a duplicate photo that is saved into another album it will recognize that it is saved and it wouldn't elect to delete a photo saved in an album. Will photo sweeper also recognize this situation? Thanks so much!

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety

      Hi @Jessica and Erik Raygor! Sorry for the delayed response! So i'm not 100% sure if it will, but heres my prediction...Any photos in any album are just referenced photos to the actual photo in the Library, so my hunch is that it would.
      The nice thing about these types of software is it's just putting the so called "duplicates" in an album that you can then 100% verify if you want them to be removed, so you do have full control and it doesn't just go and delete them for you.
      Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your support!

    What I found that works for me is to create a smart album and the rule is "FILENAME includes (1)". Once you click done, delete the files in that folder. That should take care of some duplicates.

    thank you for sharing! I imported photos from hard drive to photos on macbook air under albums. looks like everything is getting backed up in icloud and into the photo library. i just realized that the option for saving space on mac was checked. does this mean the photo i imported from hard drive to the photo library is at a reduced size? therefore, it is the reduced size that gets uploaded to icloud? also the same copy is also showing up under imports folder in addition to the library folder and the album folder that i created. can i delete everything in the import folder? per your video, i understand that everything is stored in library, and sorted under albums. many thanks!

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před rokem

      Great questions @Hong Zhou!
      When you turn on the option for "Optimizing Photo Storage" within the Apple Photos Preferences, it will always upload the original high quality photo to iCloud. iCloud will always store the highest quality. It only optimizes on the Mac to free up space and show you smaller qualities and then when you click on one, it will download the high quality. So you shouldn't have to worry.
      I may not have clarified it in this video, but imports is kinda linked to the Library. So if you delete it in the import category, it will delete it from the Library. Where it doesn't delete is from Albums. When you have a photo in an album and you delete it, you will get a prompt to remove from album, or delete from iCloud. So you would just remove if you didn't want to delete it from everywhere.
      I hope that helps! Thank you for the continued support!

    Hi Joel,
    is it possible that the duplicate’s you are creating, when you export and import photos from the library at approx. 06:00, are modified/developed photos? Then it would make sense to not detect them as duplicated photos? The size would be different then and it depends on the information Apple compares to detect duplicates…
    Regards,
    Ulli

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi @Ulli Petersen! I think you're totally correct when you say that when you export, they could be slightly different, therefore not being recognized as a true duplicate. However with that example, I dragged the same photo from the desktop in, and it still was imported, so it shouldn't have imported it the second time around.
      I think in the latest version of Apple Photos Monterey it has improved a little, but still leaves me skeptical. There's some pretty robust third party software out there that detects duplicates and similar photos in the library. My fingers are crossed for Apple to incorporate these features someday!

    Man, really need some help here. I bought photosweep and did the “duplicate files” option. It deleted like 51k dupes (of almost 90k files), but not all (some I had like 9 duplicates accumulated), and my library now has seemingly all 51k files still showing as blank tiles of the original aspect ratio. It also deleted non-duplicates!
    It also wiped out every album pic I had, as those were the earliest copies of the duplicated files.
    I did back up the entire library to another disk so I CAN start over, but what to do differently if this is photosweep’s normal results?
    TYSM for the video!!👏👏

    Great video, thank you. Just got PhotoSweeper and trying to get the details before going through my large Photos library. I have a bunch of photos brought in from PhotoStream as .JPG and then reimported manually as .HEIC (since as you noted Apple doesn’t recognize these as duplicates). Almost all my photos are organized into albums in Photos. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s the jpeg and sometimes it’s the heic in the album. Any way to know which one is in the album without manually checking? Can I compare an album or albums (ie that “segment” of the library) with the rest of the library?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před rokem +1

      Hi @maisonpleine!
      You could probably use Smart Albums to isolate the file type in addition to excluding certain albums and such.
      Another trick could be to find all files that are .HEIC, then export as jpeg and the rescan with PhotoSweeper. I don't remember if PhotoSweeper has the option to ignore file extension or not. May be worth a peek at the settings before it scans for duplicates.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

      @@Learnwithjoel Thanks so much! I actually think I figured out the straightforward answer: after clicking Compare, a pop-up asks if you want to Auto-mark. If you click on Preferences, you can set parameters for Photo Sweeper to follow. One of them is "Albums-->Mark (for deletion) if not in an album." Then you can drag that item to the top of the list (so file size, format, etc doesn't pre-empt being in an album). I'm not sure I understood your suggestion but greatly appreciate your thinking about this issue! It seems a few other people had similar questions.

      Hey @Lillian Zelinski!
      It's can very common to have same file name and two different images. It could have been exported with a different name. The file could be changed in the finder.
      The actual file name can't be changed in Photos. You can add a Title to the photo, which is different, but you would have to either export it out to change the filename, or find the original in the Finder and change it there.
      Hope that helps! Thanks!

      @Learnwithjoel  Před 3 lety +3

      Ohhhh @Barry Wood, I hate to say, but you're up for a task!
      My best advice for this because I've done it before is to be very organized prior to scanning them in. Usually when items are scanned, they'll have the same titles, dates and times and really all the meta data besides the size will almost be identical.
      You for sure can try some of these softwares to assist in finding similar/duplicate files, but you'll for sure be weeding through them manually after a scan. Scanning old family photos has always been a daunting task, so know that you're not alone!
      Make yourself a cocktail, carve out some time and break out the work in small chunks. It's a long project, but will feel so good when it's done!
      Probably not the answer you're looking for, but I hope it helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!

      Great question @Alex A!
      Here is my hunch...I would bet that the majority of software only scan what's actually in the Apple Photo Library and since you have photos referenced, those probably aren't scanned.
      Depending what software you prefer, it may not be a bad idea to shoot them an email and confirm.
      You can certainly consolidate and I bet that would solve the issue and then also if you want to use iCloud Photos, those pictures would then show up there too as Apple requires files to be inside the library for it to sync to the cloud.

      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety

      Hi @Hannes F!
      So keep in mind that if you have a photo in three different albums, they're not actual duplicates.
      Anytime you add a photo to a regular Photo Album, it's just making a reference to the actual photo that lives in the Library.
      Also with any of these options, your existing albums will always stay intact.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

    • @durohr232
      @durohr232 Před 2 lety +3

      @@bosmanka I think the reason he tries to avoid answering these questions because this video is sponsored by Photo Sweeper and that one cannot handle this situation.
      However Power Photos can cleanup in a way that the remaining photo is added to the albums where the duplicates are removed keeping the albums intact.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety

      I can see it from that perspective @Dirk Bosman, but it there is one duplicate that lives in one album and that photo is also duplicated but in another album, Apple Photos still treats it as two different files.
      With all of this software, it's scanning the Photos Library as a whole. It finds actual duplicates or similar photos and then just identifies them for you and puts them into an album so that you can then remove/delete if you want.
      Existing albums will be there, but if the original photo is deleted, yes the photo will be removed from the albums. Any photos within a regular album are just references to the actual photo that lives in the library.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety

      Hi @Durohr! I certainly don't try to avoid answering anything, even if I don't have a good answer, and It would be awesome to be sponsored by Photo Sweeper! I signed up as an affiliate just like any other person could.
      Power Photos is for sure excellent and honestly I recommend users to try them all and use what fits their needs and workflow the best.
      The biggest thing is that the regular albums only hold photos that are referenced to the actual file that is in the library. So you wouldn't be able to keep an album in tact if you were to eliminate and delete photos from the library. So the nice thing about all of these software option is that when it does the scan and identifies the photos as "similar" or "duplicates", it just marks them in an album for the user to then decide what to actually do with them.
      Hope that helps clarify!

However I have a problem which doesn't appear on tutorials - how can I delete a photo from one Smart group when it is duplicated in two. When I try to delete from one of the groups I get a message that the deletion will delete from the Library , which is not what i'm trying to achieve

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Před 2 lety

      Hi @Neil Calvet!
      So Smart Albums are just designed to find photos based off the parameters you set. So the Smart Album will always change depending on that criteria. The photos are not moved or copied from the library to the Smart Albums, it's more of just a reference to the actual photo that lives in the Library.
      It is working as expected if you delete a photo from the Smart Album it will delete everywhere else. Unlink the regular album, which also makes a reference of the photo, you can add photos to a regular album and when you delete it, it will give you an option to just remove from the album and remain in library, or delete from everywhere.
      The reason that your photo would be showing up in two different smart albums, would be because it must share some common trait to the parameters you set in the smart album.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

      Even if you have the free version of Google, you still get 15GB of cloud storage, and Google Drive works so great on pretty much all platforms. Best thing to do would be to upload all the photos from your Android into Google Drive and then go to your Mac and either visit: drive.google.com and download them, or download their google drive app and it will auto sync too.

      Are you talking about side by side with 2 libraries viewing in Apple Photos or within a 3rd party software?
      As far as Apple Photos goes, you can only have 1 library open at a time.
      Is the goal to consolidate and eliminate duplicates? If so, I would for sure combine everything into one library. Now that Apple has a built in feature to merge duplicates, (which seems to work pretty well. video to come on that) I would go that route.
      As far as sharing iCloud storage, are both of you using the same Apple ID, or are you doing family sharing?
      I always recommend having one main library that is locally downloaded with all original images. Then you know you truly have 100% off all of your files if internet goes crazy.

    Hi Joel,
    I loved your describing Photo Duplicates.
    I am another issue concerning Photos and was wondering if you know about the following problem or could address it. Thanks.
    Ever since OS Catalina, I have had trouble moving imported photos like I used to be able to. When photos are imported to my selected album they are added to the end of the last imported photo(s). When I want to move them to a spot where others like them are located I used to use the "Drag & Drop" method and it was great. Fast and efficient. Now I can only move a photo(s) the height of my computer screen. Then I have to release the photo(s) and "Drag" to the height of the screen again and again. This morning I had to "Drag" 12 photos 21 times before being able to "Drop" them at the location I wanted them to be.
    Is there a workaround to this problem. Apple Support Supervisors say my concerns have been sent to engineering for their appraisal. I have gone through 3 OS launches with no change.
