7,200 lbs. of rubber rubbish pulled from Kaneohe Bay

  • It's tiring work. On a day like Sunday, Hawaii's pristine conditions make for crystal-clear blue water, but underneath that ideal view is a mass of junk at Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor in Kaneohe.

Well, here is something that CAN'T be blamed on TOURISTS. It had to be locals in Hawaii who did this. Locals expect tourists to respect the land when they visit and rightly so, but locals should be doing the same before critizing tourists.

After living on Oahu for 4 years , I don't know it all , but litter is a HUGE problem in paradise. From this kind of thing with the tires, to the homeless littering and using the streets as bathrooms, to people leaving unwanted furniture or anything on the sidewalks , to the wind blowing litter all over the place.

In 1968 when I was a little kid, I remember there was an old washing machine off shore a short distance in Ka'a'awa and my dad used to throw rocks, trying to get the rocks to land in it. And keep in mind, beach glass has to come from somewhere - it came from tons of glass bottles etc thrown into the ocean.

The State or City should find ways to step up enforcement of illegal dumping. The neighbors right across the street probably see everything happening, but don't want to get involved. Kaneohe Bay is polluted from run-off from many areas, including the base. Sad to see this happening, the free tire dump is just a ten minute drive from there.

The marine base, sewage waste facility and overcrowding (which caused large amounts of runoff) has had devastating effects on the bay and the life which once thrived there… but that’s basically the story of ALL of the ocean here in Hawai’i, even as recently as 40 years ago much of the beaches were still crystal clear… do you remember flying inter island and how when you were taking off or landing the water behind the airport was so clear it looked like a swimming pool?
