See the sand and mud it kicked up in the aerial photo? It probably did significant damage to the ocean floor, the reef, and any sea life in the area. They probably caused significant environmental damage. We just saw how much a boat owner got fined for their boat damaging the reef and by the looks of it the damage from this will likely be much larger. Cruise ships need to be banned from approaching our shores this close except in designated docking channels.

@@river4462 of course tourism is a blight on our ʻāina, our culture, our traditions, our people. We, including us, didn’t learn a damn thing from the COVID lock down nor did we do anything different to change our dependency on tourism. Believe me, I understand the anger and the passion of wanting our Hawaiʻi and our poe kanaka āpau to come home. Our people are trying to survive and sadly these cruise ships bring in the money to keep the jobs and the economy going. It’s simpler to rant and rave but until an idea is born that can make the islandʻs economy be based in a more healthful industry then we are stuck with tourism. I don’t have the answer to change the economy. This problem is rooted back to the overthrow when even our Aliʻi made the wrong decisions and allowed the haole to get an influential foot in the door and then we were overthrown. Had we had the opportunity to be like NZ or Tonga, etc and have restrictions on who can own land, do you think we would be in this situation? I doubt it. I truly believe reparations for kanaka maoli is long overdue but politics are a friggin’ mess and ALL politicians are forced to play political games of give and take. The cruise ship captain is ignorant, did wrong and ignored the rules. It is being investigated, hopefully they can levy a big fine. The rules are there. Leadership cannot get rid of tourism, so the cruise contracts will continue. With the horror of the Maui fires and ALL the economic problems and issues (not even measuring the human pain in to it) that resulted from it, our state budget is already faltering and we have years of recovery ahead of us. Give me a feasible solution because I desperately want to hear what can save Hawaiʻi.
