  • Paul Lee, 28, moved to Bangkok, Thailand from NYC three years ago. He lives in a 650-square-foot one-bedroom apartment in the Thonglor neighborhood, which Paul says is "the SoHo of Bangkok." The apartment came furnished, and Paul has access to amenities, including a pool and a gym.

My life and all of my previous values have completely changed from the hustle, hyper-consumerist and doggish style of NYC to my new life here in Thailand.       Love this! My husband is Thai and we want to retire here someday.
      I wish you could go over the details regarding citizenship or a visa to be able to stay in Thailand for so long. And if you learned the language prior to moving. I know there’s lots of small details to make this work so I’m very curious!

    Medical and dental is very affordable and world class in Bangkok. It is a great city for a lot of people.

      Affordable comparing to what? For example, speaking of a dental care. What is a turnkey price to replace a tooth with an implant, medium implant supplier, not from Switzerland but from Brazil, Neodent, for example. I guess, this should be paid out of pocket - I doubt that a regular nomad insurance will cover such treatment.

      Rama 9 Hospital wants to charge me $1200.00 for a colonoscopy. This is after I paid $600.00 for a battery of tests for a health check up for my age which said I was fine. Dont tell me Thailand is cheap...

      yeah, as a Thai who also a US citizen I have been living in both countries. While Medicare in the US is an industry where giving birth could bring one into lifetime debts. I still feel bad for Thai citizens the most though most of us had to work aboard to get that "cheaper" feeling to live in our own country.

    I love Thailand. The people are so friendly, and their hospitality is superior. The cost of living is incredibly cheap compared to the US. I can eat out every single day, and the food is amazing. I also feel so safe here.

    Im the same age also a transplant from nyc and lived in Asia for 4.5 years (Seoul, Bangkok, Shanghai)
    Never looked back
    These asian cities are light years better than like NYC, LA, etc.
    Safe, convenient, clean, good night life, plenty of food options
    If you can work remote and have an American salary living in one of these cities its like a dream

      I disagree man. I think Thailand and their government will continue to make Thailand and it's culture thrive. As long as expats, tourists, and foreigners come here and respect the people and the culture, it's fine. Thai economy also thrives on tourism/expats, etc.

It’s called the foreign earned income tax treaty. Secondly when you live in Thailand you pay less taxes to the Thai government. Please, educate yourself before making assumptions like he isn’t paying taxes or something. You’re just making a fool of yourself.

    I moved to Thailand from America around the same time as Paul. I’ve done a few trips here before I settled on Thailand. The cost of living in Bangkok is a bit higher than the rest of Thailand but very doable. Especially if you have income from abroad. My advice is if you get the chance to live outside the US, even for a bit, take it and see what else is out there. Bring that new perspective home.

      Even inside the US. I've lived in LA all my life and when I got out to other states, everything was like 3-4x cheaper. Even going to northern California, it's half the cost. Just have to avoid the really big cities.

    My husband and I were fortunate enough to be able to pay off our mortgage early. We were both still working, and took the payment amount that we had been using to pay off our mortgage faster and we put it straight into investments. We were able to retire early because of almost 7 years of putting away what would have been our mortgage payment as well as maxing out our 401K/403B plans. Thankfully we were taught by both of our parents the value of living within our means. Thank you for your advice. I know it will help people. we are interested in investments that could set me up for retirement , I mean I've heard of people that netted hundreds of thousands during these crash, I listened to someone on a podcast who earned over $650K in less than a year, what's the strategy behind such returns?

    Wonderful story. A heck of a financial journey. Not only is financial literacy not taught in school, neither is financial arbitrage. To have the ability to be in a country with a strong currency, then use that currency buying power in another country where it can do more, go further, and be able to live more comfortably is priceless.       Because he's speaking from an American perspective--as an American. $150k in America is middle class but it doesn't go far. By living in Thailand, he can save for retirement and live his best life. He's smart and brave to do this at 28.

    Hey, we workout at the same gym :D Glad you like it here. I've grown up in Bangkok in the 90s, the city still has a lot of room to improve, but it has seen some progress years by years. And yes, the happiness is not only about material things, sometimes it's more about how much you can save as well.

    *The market is pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.*

    Someone who has their priorities straight...... Quality of Life is more than just burning cash in NY. With income of $150k per annum the exchange rate arbitrage affords a high quality lifestyle in BKK but without the ruthless 'hustle-culture' of a major western city.

    Congrats to Paul for making the decision that is best for him. I was born in Thailand, but grew up in the States and currently live and work in California. Aside from the year-round heat and horrible traffic, Thailand is a great Asian city with lost of places to go and amazing food. You'll never be bored in Thailand. And of course, it's way more affordable than the states. Maybe when I get closer to retirement, I might follow Paul's path and maybe consider living there part-time. It's just going to continue to become more expensive to live in California.

    I lived in Kuala Lumpur for 3 years and Jakarta for 2 2010-2015 best thing I ever did. I did not miss the USA when I lived in Asia. I made so many friends that I still talk with today. Like you I hit Fitness First everyday it was great. I have a few more years and I am done retired. Can't wait to move back!

      That's smart. I'm quite lucky exposed to personal finance at an early age, worked full time when I was 19, purchased first home at 28. Going forward, got laid off at 36 amid covid-outbreak, and immediately consulted an advisor to stay afloat. As of today, I'm only 15% short of my $1m goal after subsequent investments.

      Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. Investing is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire.

      And that is in the city think about how cheap it is in comparison to Miami or California and getting beach front luxury. You can get is in some areas for $200 a month.

      I can speak thai conversationally now. I take thai classes twice a week and also have a Thai girlfriend which helps a lot. But in the more popular regions of Thailand, most locals can speak basic english and there's also huge international communities with english speaking expats as well.

      I will give you a trick. Stay in Thailand only during the rainy season and winter (we used to have before global warming). Then go back to The US during summer here.

    How did Paul get involved in a formal or official capacity in Bangkok real estate? It'd help others to know. Formal SE Asia jobs are hard to get as a foreigner, unless they're very technical. I assume Paul's actual service is marketing/promoting real estate, and he gets a commission kickback and does relo "consulting" of some sort.

    I've visited a couple of times and I can definitely see myself living a digital nomad life there for a few months at least. It's especially comfortable when you earn western money and the people are so kind. I feel safe there

      Paul has an Education visa learning the Thai language. It’s normally 6 months but can be extended if you continue your education. There are other visas such as the Elite visa for people under 50. There is the retirement visa for 50+ years old. A digital nomad visa is coming soon.
