      Go up on your tungsten size. A 1 or 1¼oz will drop right in; you won't have to wonder. Sometimes they just suck it in; other times they'll knock the snot out of it. But have at least a 7'6"-8' daubin' stick to snatch 'em out when they snap it up.

      @@shadygraves I have a 7’6 heavy kistler helium it’s a broom stick for sure I’ve been throwing an oz weight but it seems like the only bites I’ve been getting is just a pick up and the fish runs like crazy pulling my rod. But for as much as I punch heavy pads where I’m at I’ve never picked up and felt a fish . It’s always on the initial fall. Not even the initial pick up. Which makes me think I’m not recognizing the bite on the first pull. I’ve felt what I thought to be my bait hitting a strand of grass but I feel like I’m missing something here . Also I haven’t produced many numbers on this technique this year. Last year I was on em now it’s been few and far between

    • @shadygraves
      @shadygraves Před 3 lety +1

      Great question. He's right; 5-6 pumps or shakes of the rod is standard if you wanna fish at a faster clip. If you DON'T separate the tentacles on a Sweet Beaver, it more closely resembles the "folded up", fleeing posture of a crawfish. It also tends to glide and fall in different directions more, giving you a larger strike zone than just up and down. Put a small glass rattle in it for that clicking sound and to make you shake it more. Also, spray it with BANG Crawfish scent. This attracts fish, makes them hold on longer, and also "slicks it up", giving you better grass pentration. Hematoma Beaver or Junebug BB Cricket will get you BIT.

  • @captainstevespatafora4185

    Great tips brother Balzz! What tips can you offer to keep a 2 oz tungsten from hitting the water like a bowling ball? I can get the 1 and 1 1/2 in pretty quiet but seem to land a bit harder than I would like . As usual I appreciate any advice . Thx in advance bro !

    • @shadygraves
      @shadygraves Před 3 lety +2

      My advice would be to put a plate in your back yard and practice. That 2 oz tungsten makes a Godawful racket and will even break that plate if you don't put the brakes on and pull back, EVER SO SLIGHTLY, just as it hits. Break enough of your wife's plates; you'll get good in a hurry! Seriously, PRACTICE. You must be in 100% control of your tackle at ALL times. That little back pressure comes with practice.

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Před 2 lety +1

      honestly i could care less - green, black, brown, just not flourescent stuff. i think there's so much cover where you're using braid that it sort of just blends in. personally i think it's the sound of braid in water and the sound it makes rubbing the grass that spooks fish.

    Whoa- so you're throwing 3/4 ounce on your open water rig? Wow- maybe this is why I suck at flipping. Not at the actual act of flipping- I'm fine there, my problem is just getting bit. But it's been drilled into my head over and over again to always use the lightest weight possible- maybe this is the problem, I'm not getting a fast enough fall to attract bites? I mean I understand when you're punching you have to use whatever will get you down there but, in open water, around the cover- I would've assumed you went down to a half ounce at most- lower if possible.

    • @shadygraves
      @shadygraves Před 3 lety

      @@shadygraves Thanks for the info.- yeah, sounds like I've been going about it all wrong. Does depth ever come into play? Like what do you consider too shallow to try punching or pitching around? Or do you just lighten up then or what?

    • @jaaypriest1018
      @jaaypriest1018 Před 3 lety

      Weights depend on the time of the year, fish activity, and wind along with cover obviously. During the spring/spawn I might flip anywhere from 1/8oz - 1/2oz Depending on cover, wind, and depth. Usually during the summer, I like flipping a 3/4oz to the same places and depths I'll flip a 3/8oz earlier the year because that faster rate of fall will trigger a more aggressive reaction bite in those hot months when the fish have a higher metabolism...
