Remember when Benjamin Martin did the prisoner exchange? Right as he was leaving, Tavington came in and said, "I remember you, with that farm and that stupid little boy. Did he die, uh?" He then said, "You know, its an ugly business, doing one's duty, but just occasionally, its a real pleasure." He enjoyed it.
Robert Sandberg I know. But I think he's saying that just to rattle him, to get him to show agression. A claim supported when Benjamin says "Before this war is over I'm going to kill you" Tavington replies "Why wait?". If Benjamin shows agression, he gets busted, and Tavington really wanted to get his Ghost, and they have no need to go through with the prisoner exchange.
If you saw the beginning of the movie, Mel Gibson's character fought at Fort Wilderness. The war was so brutal he refused to support the Revolutionary War because he did not want to fight anymore therefore he would not support the fighting of American young people because of the brutality. However, when his son dies in this scene, he realizes that his protesting is doing nothing to save these young people and decides to fight.
I first saw this movie when I was 18. This scene straight up almost gave me a heart attack! This kind of thing really happened. I cannot imagine the anguish of having my own child die in my arms. Especially caused by a narcissistic military man. When we get to where Thomas was, in the throes of death, we better have Jesus as our Savior. The man who was crucified next to Jesus said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in Paradise." Salvation is that simple. Just ask Jesus to save you. If anyone blows this off today, when you get to your final minutes, just remember the man next to Jesus and ask Jesus to save you and He WILL.
@LordVerdo The film makers were aware of that when they made the movie. They say in an interview somewhere that Tavington was based on one particular man, not the entire British army.
He was in trouble a lot however by Cornwallis so not exactly as he was really valued for skill but in the end Cornwallis curses him for the final disobeying of orders he will ever make and Cornwallis sends all his troops to take the glory instead of Tavington and leaves Tavington behind whilst the rest retreat as retaliation.
They did make a point somewhere that the British were not. It was only Tavington's character that was messed up. Watching Cornwallis and the other officers show how the British actually acted.
Actually, when you think about it, it's Tavington that commits crimes in the film, the soldiers are forced to follow him and keep their mouths shut about what was going on. Things like that happen a lot of the time in armies all around the world.
To everyone saying Thomas was stupid...he wasn't thinking about the aftermath. It was adrenaline, an in-the-moment rush. He was just trying to save his brother and best friend. You all might not think rationally at a time like that.
And the sight of Thomas' toy soldier figurines, which would be Thomas' "army" literally going up forth to fight the British, just as he would have wanted it.
I will give you guys a bit of heads up: I have studied the American Revolutionary War for almost two years now, and I will share with you one letter that Colonel Charles Stuart wrote to his father the earl of Bute said. And no, I did not make it up! "Wherever our armies have marched, wherever they have encamped during the last campaign, every species of barbarity has been executed, we planted irrevocable hatred wherever we went; which neither time nor measures will be able to eradicate."
What is interesting is that his boys never saw him fight like this. He fought in the French and Indian War, and he learned from the Indians that you don't stand 100 yards apart from one another a shoot without cover. He uses cover, like an Indian would. He fights like an Indian. His boys are shocked seeing thier Father fight.
too bad the whole world is being killed and poisoned (both mentally and physically) by the ultra rich elite. Don't worry, only 300 million people will be alive in about 20 years ON THE WHOLE EARTH! British, American, Coca Cola, Nestle ITS ALL THE SAME JUST DIFFERENT NAMES IN THE NWO!
iloveyoutheletterU It doesn't matter what race you are, what religion you are, where you were from. Everyone dies. "War will make corpses of us all." - Faramir in The Lord of the Rings book.
Well, in this movie, they weren't all bad. Right before that part, an officer thanks the guy for healing the British soldiers. THEN, the colonel came and said: Burn his house, hang his son, enlist his black workers and... BLAM! Stupid boy. BLAM! Wounded americans.
In 'my silly fantasy world' (if you were referring to my quote) is Lord of the Rings race actually is very very significant... Perhaps you should pick up the book and read it
Thank you for having a level head. I cannot believe how Americans and Brits alike are getting their panties in a twist over a movie. I would like my fellow Americans to realize that you don't have to be rude to be patriotic. I am proud to be an American and I am also proud of my largely English heritage. Get over yourselves people.
The two best ways to die in a Mel Gibson movie. 1. Be Mel Gibson's family 2. Be the guys who kill Mel Gibsons family. Braveheart: English people kill his family, he beats up England. Same in the patriot. In Mad Max, people kill his WIFE AND SON and he basically beats up the future.
another thing, is that you see Mel gison, watching his free, black, workers his friends being forced into slavery by the brittish, the wounded, defenseless continentals crying for mercy and being shot, his son Gabriel being shipped out to be hung, and worst of all, his 14 year old son dead in his arms is when he realizes that he has to fight for freedom against opression.
I was watching this scene at school today and I almost started crying because the character who died looks exactly like my friend Elisia and yes she's a girl.
I agree that Great Britain is the bravest nation in the world. During the Second World War and the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain was the only nation in Europe to stand up to Hitler and Boney, respectfully.
btw how come the only video of the plane going in the first tower when he heard the plane he didnt look for the plane while he was recording he looked straight away at the first tower as if he knew it would go there
Then, there is the letter that Tarleton wrote to Cornwallis; in it, he wanted to lay waste to the countryside with fire and sword. This Tavington is based on Wemyss, a British officer, Tarleton, and Christian Huck. Pick up these books about the southern campaign of the Revolutionary War: the road to Guilford Courthouse, and Partisans and redcoats. Now before everyone accuses me of hatred against the redcoats, that is not true. Some were good, and some bad, just like our side.
Only happened because of that madman Tavington. 99% of the time the British gave quarter and acted honorably, before this scene a British infantry officer thanked the Americans for treating their wounded and reacted in horror to the order given to execute them.
Standing by someone doesn't have to mean allowing them to warmonger where they want. The West is still a strong group of countries who would defend each other in the event of a war, and just because Britain supported you in invading in the Middle East doesn't make them the only country to stand by the US.
I, on behalf of the British people past and present, say that we are very sorry to the world. We are sorry for losing the american war of independence.
That was the British empire, sadly. I thank God that they are not like that anymore. I thank God that they are our friends. If you doubt this scene, then read about the what they did in putting down the Irish and Scottish "Rebellions." Not all were like that of course, as shown. Hopelessly blinded by loyalty to their king, is all I can say.
The villain in this movie was great, really cruel and sadistic. You really despised him and when the actor brings out the worst in the character the death becomes really satisfying.
Mel Gibson was amazing as always as an actor. You can say about the private Gibson whatever you want, but as an actor he's simply amazing. But Jason Isaacs deserves a lot of kudos as well. It takes a lot to play villain you hate so damn much and which you formerly abhor for all that disgusting things he's doing in the movie, that you just want him to see dead and to see how he gets what he deserves!
@happycompy Yes, it is out of his power: He cannot do anything about it otherwise he would lose his life according to the rules of the British army at the time. I felt so bad when he died in the next scene, I literally almost cried, lol. I was like noo, he was so nice!
@knarfnavillus I think it more about Tavington just plain crazy with power and evil. At 2:09 you see that guy feel bad about all this but he's not in charge.
Jason Isaacs as Tavington is a bloody good actor if you ask me.
He has to be to make you hate him.
The background music in this movie makes the movie even better.
i watched this in history class, and i started crying! this is an amazing movie, well done!
*Sips tea*
one of most memorable films of my childhood
This is the saddest scene . . . I cry every time.
BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME! Mel Gibson movies bring out every emotion its incredible! Thanks for the clip.
love this scene
@730Teresa730 the actor who plays gabriel is Heath Ledger, he was really amazing in this movie. RIP Heath Ledger
Totally I love this scene..
bless you man
To be fair, Tavington didn't look like he enjoyed it. He looked just about as nonchalant as if he was swatting a bothersome fly.

@LordVerdo The film makers were aware of that when they made the movie. They say in an interview somewhere that Tavington was based on one particular man, not the entire British army.
Even during that time that man would have been court marshaled
He was in trouble a lot however by Cornwallis so not exactly as he was really valued for skill but in the end Cornwallis curses him for the final disobeying of orders he will ever make and Cornwallis sends all his troops to take the glory instead of Tavington and leaves Tavington behind whilst the rest retreat as retaliation.
Too true.
@GeneralKabul I remembered the lines of Tavington,"Did he died?, that stupid little boy"
Okay, Tavington, you don't have too many shoes.
They did make a point somewhere that the British were not. It was only Tavington's character that was messed up. Watching Cornwallis and the other officers show how the British actually acted.
I like how Mel Gibson was still walking in slow motion after his son was shot.
Actually, when you think about it, it's Tavington that commits crimes in the film, the soldiers are forced to follow him and keep their mouths shut about what was going on. Things like that happen a lot of the time in armies all around the world.
i love the way that Gibson just recruits child soldiers for no reason
To everyone saying Thomas was stupid...he wasn't thinking about the aftermath. It was adrenaline, an in-the-moment rush. He was just trying to save his brother and best friend. You all might not think rationally at a time like that.
And the sight of Thomas' toy soldier figurines, which would be Thomas' "army" literally going up forth to fight the British, just as he would have wanted it.
@Varyalover my point is, if you had your son die in your arms wouldn't you want vengence?
I will give you guys a bit of heads up: I have studied the American Revolutionary War for almost two years now, and I will share with you one letter that Colonel Charles Stuart wrote to his father the earl of Bute said. Mel Gibson is a damn good actor. You can really see true emotion in his eyes and face in every movie he does.
The guy that played Tavington in this movie also plays Lucius malfoy in the Harry potter movies!
That's my England. That's how they roll.
@jakestep17 I know! I can't decide which one's more moving: Death of Thomas or Gabriel?
i am so glad that tavington had such a brutal, harsh, painful, and utterly humiliating death. i really am
Mel gibsons face at 0:36 is heartbreaking.
The second you see that tomahawk in the flames you know there's going to be blood!
R.I.P. Heath Ledger
Travington used "Avada Kedvra"! It's super effective
Halo Announcer: NIPPLE SHOT
thank god someone with somecomin scence
This isn't directed, Written, or Produced by Mel. He just acted in the film.
The thing I love about The Patriot is that it's not just Braveheart set in Colonial America. Not at all!
Still a fun watch, though.
I cried really hard when he died
it was a sad day
That Tavington was indeed cruel and gruesome
well too late now. its 13 years later
I actually feel sad for that one british officer who looked at the son with tears going down his face.
you didn't answer my question ...
he is not only cruel , but he is sadistic, evil , selfish and brutal
America gooooood, England baaaadddd
too bad the whole world is being killed and poisoned (both mentally and physically) by the ultra rich elite. Don't worry, only 300 million people will be alive in about 20 years ON THE WHOLE EARTH! British, American, Coca Cola, Nestle ITS ALL THE SAME JUST DIFFERENT NAMES IN THE NWO!

Hahahahaha i read this with Patrick Star's voice hahahaha
In 'my silly fantasy world' (if you were referring to my quote) is Lord of the Rings race actually is very very significant... Perhaps you should pick up the book and read it

cant help it but tavington is so cool

Tavington came back from the dead and disliked this video 4 times.
2:32 - Trivia: that little guy is Logan Lerman.
another thing, is that you see Mel gison, watching his free, black, workers his friends being forced into slavery by the brittish, the wounded, defenseless continentals crying for mercy and being shot, his son Gabriel being shipped out to be hung, and worst of all, his 14 year old son dead in his arms is when he realizes that he has to fight for freedom against opression.
I was watching this scene at school today and I almost started crying because the character who died looks exactly like my friend Elisia and yes she's a girl.
When I was in 11th grade, there was a girl in my literature class who also looked quite similar to Thomas.(The character who died)
I agree that Great Britain is the bravest nation in the world. During the Second World War and the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain was the only nation in Europe to stand up to Hitler and Boney, respectfully.
Anyone else get goosebumps at 3:05?!
btw how come the only video of the plane going in the first tower when he heard the plane he didnt look for the plane while he was recording he looked straight away at the first tower as if he knew it would go there
But killing wounded soldiers was under Colonel Tavington's order and later in the movie he gets in trouble for his actions.
Then, there is the letter that Tarleton wrote to Cornwallis; in it, he wanted to lay waste to the countryside with fire and sword. This Tavington is based on Wemyss, a British officer, Tarleton, and Christian Huck. Whatever Gabriel's real name is HE IS AN AWESOME ACTOR IN THIS! I haven't even seen the whole movie. Only parts of it on CZcams.
Only happened because of that madman Tavington. 99% of the time the British gave quarter and acted honorably, before this scene a British infantry officer thanked the Americans for treating their wounded and reacted in horror to the order given to execute them.
I know right? No world wars so far.
The best movie ever, other than Braveheart which is essentially the same thing in a another country.
Standing by someone doesn't have to mean allowing them to warmonger where they want. The West is still a strong group of countries who would defend each other in the event of a war, and just because Britain supported you in invading in the Middle East doesn't make them the only country to stand by the US.
Yeah okay "Chocobear: LOL
@TheTemplar117 Me too. I wonder who plays him...
guys reply please
is the guy in the blue uniform heath ledger???and does he die in the movie?
Tavington could've at least draw his wand out and yelled out "Avada Kedavra!" at Thomas, making his death quick and painless. Don't you agree? Lol.
I, on behalf of the British people past and present, say that we are very sorry to the world. We are sorry for losing the american war of independence.
I hope they realize they shot him on the opposite side of the heart
holy shit tavington was a fucking boss
depressing to know that probably all of this was real conditions.
two unjust deaths first Thomas and later Gabriel.
And Canada too bro.
To see a bit of payback, do a search for "mel gibson the patriot tomahawk fight scenes"
THATS A BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(troll face)
God save the King!
I live exactly where this movie was made right on the property where it was made and in 4:07 that stream I've walked through
2:10 that British guy feels bad
I seriously did not expect that when i first saw it i was like "OH SHIT!" especially with all that blood. NOT a pretty sight O_o
The villain in this movie was great, really cruel and sadistic. You really despised him and when the actor brings out the worst in the character the death becomes really satisfying.

3:18 Early Koni. Giving children weapons tut tut.
@happycompy Yes, it is out of his power: He cannot do anything about it otherwise he would lose his life according to the rules of the British army at the time. I felt so bad when he died in the next scene, I literally almost cried, lol. I was like noo, he was so nice!
"gabriel run" ???? he was chained up plus had numerous guards around him he was kindof asking to get shot
Why do you think we rebelled against England? Study the history of the Colonies and their relationship with England, and you’ll get your answer.
Jason Issacs ROCKS in this film, he's almost like a Nazi officer. He completely steals this film from Gibson.
calm down dear...its only a movie
@knarfnavillus I think it more about Tavington just plain crazy with power and evil.
At 2:09 you see that guy feel bad about all this but he's not in charge.
The British are some of the bravest fighters in the World.....look at their military history highly trained troops who rather die than surrender.
It's funny to think that's the kid from Everwood.
@Varyalover so you'd rather him dispair rather than be brrought to justice?
Same thing
and then mel goes mad.....
YOu're right mate. Well said. Worst people in the world.
plz reply to this, but did they take abigail away? im watching this movie in school and this is where we r :D
DAMN U LUCIUS MALFOY
