An interesting point to consider is that according to the novel Tarkin Palpatine didn't actually care much about wealth. He truly cared more about Power. The luxury he surrounded himself was partly to indulge old fantasies and to reinforce his status in the eyes of the galaxy.

    • @cloudmaster182

Yea, he didn't rly have to be interested in it. He inherited a lot of wealth from his family, and then even more upon becoming a Sith Lord and I think the more wealth/power he attained, the easier it became to acquire more.
But yea, he definitely only valued wealth as far as it bolstered his power

It's funny because, conversely, the Emperor often seemed so...humble? He wasn't, certainly, but he carried no jeweled scepter, and wore no golden crown. He didn't garb himself in the finest clothes, but instead wore simple, black robes, and even his cane was rather nondescript. I totally accept that he had all the money, and bought the most expensive things, but he didn't have to flaunt any of it to remind people of his status; he was the Emperor, and everybody knew.

      1) A big chunk of Spanish gold was pirated off by the English. Meanwhile, sunken Spanish Galleons are found every now and then containing gold by treasure hunters.
      2) All the wealth (gold, jewels, art, furniture, etc) the Nazis stole from the Hungarian Jewish families worth billions was put on a gigantic train to be shipped to Austria. It got captured by US troops and the Americans as well as a few locals at the train station looted it. The US government also took a lot of it too. The US government paid the ancestors of said families something like 200,000 dollars 60 years later.

    • @AnnPMadera
      @AnnPMadera Před 5 měsíci +6

He already had a problem with keeping people loyal. And, despite his arrogance, he was clearly genuinely afraid of mass revolts. It's why so much of his reign was marked with propaganda designed specifically to make himself, and the Empire as a whole, out to be saviors, protecting the weak and impoverished from insurgencies and preserving peace.
If he just took whatever he wanted whenever he wanted without paying it would make the rebel cells (and then the Rebel Alliance) claims that he was nothing but a tyrant ring far more true to the average citizen of the Empire, which would only lead to even more people joining with the Rebellion, or at least starting local insurgencies. He wasn't a complete idiot. He needed to look like he was the good guy. Movements like the Partisans under Saw Gerrara he probably welcomed because they were great for Imperial propaganda.
A good guy would naturally pay for his luxuries. He doesn't coerce or steal from the people; after all, he's their protector and friend. That's the narrative he had to sell to maintain authority.

I really love getting down to minutia of the star wars universe its political sphere its finances the technology and also the characters and what happened between major events why they do what they did, how they do what they did, their motivations but also how thier day to day actions amd how those actions led into these massive iconic events we all know and love. I know alot of people hate all the politcal stuff in episode 2 bc it makee the movie drag in the middle but i think it wouldve actuwlly been really compelling and interesting if it had been spread over like say a couple seasons of a snow. Showing the different senators and their motivations and the back stabbing subterfuge but also good senators trying to do what they felt was the right thing but also the ones that appeared on the side of good but had secret nefarious agendas for personal gain, to a lesser than palpafine as hes the master of that but still probably compelling and huge in scale bc its over a whole galaxy. Even papa palps in all his immense power couldnt rule the galaxy without tons of delegation. Sorry i began to rant but thats why i love tnis channel bc it goes into the little tiny things i wonder about the star wats universe its an almost 50 year old icon of pop culture so it has so much buried deep in the cracks and layers that isnt explored that much or that deeply by other channels

One thing you had mentioned was that Palpatine funded the entirety of the Clone Army from his OWN pocket. But in the Darth Plagues novel the order was placed by Hego Damask through his company Damask Holdings, and through the intermediary of a Jedi Master Syfo Dias. So none of that said anything about Palpatine paying for it out of his own pocket. Could it be a Legends vs. Canon discrepancy? I would really be interested to see a video on Grand Admiral Thrawns background, facts about the Chiss people, the culture and traditions of the Chiss, the facts that Chiss navigators called “Skywalker’s” are actually force sensitive children navigating the unknown regions etc. A lot of information to cover in regards to Thrawn, his people, his society, worlds, military etc.

*Anakin:* My Lord, how did you finance the Death Star?
*Palpatine:* Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth J. Powell from the FED?
    *Anakin:* No.
*Palpatine:* I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Wallstreet legend.
Darth J. Powell was a Dark Lord of the Wallstreet so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create... money. He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep interest... from the ones he cared about
*Anakin:* He could actually... save people from paying for their debt?
*Palpatine:* The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
    *Anakin:* What happened to him?
*Palpatine:* He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was inflation... which, eventually of course, happened. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice margin called him in his sleep.
Ironic. He could save others from debt... but not himself.
*Anakin:* Is it possible to learn this power?
*Palpatine:* Not without a money printer.

You should really know your protocol, young padawan ;). A king is "his royal majesty". Whereas an emperor is always styled "his imperial majesty". An imperial majesty outranks a mere royal majesty (i.e. king). In the old day a king wasn't even adressed as majesty, but as "your grace". But as the European kings grew envious of the Holy Roman emperor, they copied the title of majesty, necessitating the present-day distinction between a royal (e.g. King Willem of the Netherlands or King Charles of the UK) and an imperial majesty (e.g. emperor Naruhito of Japan).
