I had an interesting encounter with the Batfish back in about 1982. At that time, I was a pilot instructor based in Wichita, Kansas who trained corporate pilots. I had an assignment to train several pilots who were new to the plane their company had just purchased. As their instructor. I was sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma from Wichita to check them out in their new jet. I am also a WW ll historian with a keen interest in our submarine forces, as well as carrier aviation since my dad had been a torpedo bomber pilot on the USS Enterprise. While in my hotel room, after a day of flight training in Tulsa, I just happened to be reading a book about the USS Batfish. At the end of the book, I read that she was now moored in the Arkansas River in Muscogee, Oklahoma as a war memorial. It then hit me that the WW ll submarine I was reading about was only 50 miles from where I was! At the end of my flight training duties, I drove the 50 miles to Muscogee and was able to conduct a self guided tour of the fabulous USS Batfish!!

I been on that submarine more than the people that served on it. I was born going to see and crawl around the inside and climb the outside, I been going to it since I was like 4 so I've been there over 100 times. It's about the only good thing to see in Muskogee.

Our USS Batfish, why she is a beautiful and proud Veteran. I was honored to visit her a few years after she arrived in Oklahoma. in 1978, my Boy Scout Troop spent the night on her and I've visited her 3 more times since then. The Batfish was not born in Oklahoma but with her courage and willingness to fight for my freedoms we cherish so highly; she has spent a good portion of her life in Oklahoma so she is now an OKIE! I'm damn proud of what she and her crew did in WW2. The USS Batfish is truly a Lady of the GREATEST generation.

Unlike what you see in this video, the first kill was by radar only with the crew never actually seeing their target visually. This was a technological miracle for early 1945.

With major flooding along the Arkansas river near Muskogee, Okla., The Batfish which has been dry docked as a war memorial, is currently loose from it’s moorings and floating again. This may be one of it’s most dangerous missions!

There was story about about a sub off the shore where this story takes place where the sub actually went into combat with another UNKNOWN U.S. submarine. The two subs never made contact with each other never even knew each other ever until years after the way. The one sub just before it went into action which may have been the sub Harder had been tied up on the carrier Bunker Hill it had instruction to take needed medical supplies the carrier gave them to a remote island when it came into battling multiple Japanese submarines... I believe this is part of the story but only part of it as stated. I believe the Harder was lost just a few weeks after this happenings... I HAD a close relative that passed away about 9 years ago and all he told were stories surrounding the Bunkerhill and the York Town carriers... Part of thee epitome of the reasons when I signed up they were only putting me on a carrier... My great uncle had a load of stories and I mean story after story of WWII. He also had the paper work & copies of news articles to back it all up. I finally found out 1997 after he passed on he claimed to have been new age radar operator. I found out he was one of the TBM pilots going on suicide missions to test the first airborne radar known to us at the time. Some of his stories also did not add up to his total history on board the York Town and Bunkerhill. He was ordered to work on in between the CV6 Enterprise and York Town to perfect the radar. In other words they just did not immediately stick radar in any plane before they tried out on a few Hell Cat fighters where as he had to write WDC about the results. He denied most of that because it is really as boring a story as it interesting. My uncle upon his death had a 1960's era Western Electric telephone unit made in the summer of 1947 according to the date on the thing. That type of phone is what turned into being the exact telephone we used from the 1950's into the early 1970's... Only he had one 20 some years before anyone even seen one. He also had a one kind solid state Western Electric AM FM UHF CARDINAL radio receiver half the size of anything made even during the 1970's. That radio I have here with me.

Is this a real story of the batfish on Muskogee? I realize it's dramatization but are any of the views if the ship running the real thing. I love going thru that ship. Went thru one in San Francisco bay once too. An aircraft carrier came into the bay while I was below decks. The sound of the propellers is etched in my memory. Not to mention the waves making the ship jump up and down. Enjoyed it so much

In February 1945, the batfish sank 3 japanese submarines in the span of 76 hours, which is a very incredible feat. This is based off of that, and the batfish was used through the 50s, when this was filmed, so I believe its the actual ship but with actors as some of the sailors? Theres a lot more information about the ship and its career, but the highlight of its career would be what's depicted in this film

Once went through an Oberon class sub at Sydney Australia maritime museum. Got to the control room and asked how they steered wire guided torpedoes, he pointed to the small tv type screen and said we just run a pencil over this touch screen. So they had touch screens in 1958, imagine what they have now.
