    Exotac is high quality. I’ve had the first two items you discussed for over a year and they are top rate, heavy duty and nicely machined. A pleasure to use.

    Speaking of fire, made a major score at the True Value Hardware Store in my area. Strike Anywhere Matches! Didn't even know they made em anymore. Both large kitchen matches & the smaller type in a box. No strike pad required. Light em on a rock or on a good pair of Levi's. Bought enough to fill two ammo cans with match boxes. Fire...meat....good.

    The lighter looks pretty nice. I'll have to check that one out. I've been using the Exotac Firesleeve & Firerod (ferro rod) for quite some time now. They work extremely well. For a lighter I typically carry a Bic in the Firesleeve and a Zippo with a Thunderbird Yellow Flame Insert that runs on standard pressurized butane like a Bic. They work really well, as long as you keep them inside your jacket in cold weather, but you do lose some of the utility that you get with a liquid fueled lighter. I also keep one of those little Peanut lighters on my keychain. It works, but windproof it is not.

  • @duxdawg

    For me the best thing about the fireSleeve is the button on the lighter doesn't get stuck in the on position while jammed down in my pack while travelling - emptying the Bic.
    Yes, I know many ways to start fires with an empty Bic. Yup, used to use a ZipTie under the button. No, doesn't happen often. Yet when it has, been very disappointing.
    Thing is, after a long hard hike I just want some hot tea and hot food right now. The fireSleeve assures me of it. Thanks ExoTac!

    After my last outing where my bics were out (my fault for not checking first, being in the hood of my pack pushed against other gear the buttons had depressed and leaked all of the butane out), having not filled up my match box and only having one match and one initial fire (again, my fault for not checking supplies and not keeping the fire I did have going), and for literally one of the first times ever just could not get a fire going from my steel when I needed to, I think I'm going to get the Exotac lighter. Or at least the bic holder to prevent future fluid leaks like I experienced. The lighter may be $50, but I would have burned a $50 dollar bill that night if it would have gotten me a fire going. I thank nature for relearning me that night to always recheck supplies before heading out, and not to slip by thinking I'm just too experienced not to get a fire going. I admit that fully and I'm glad I was able to learn from that lesson.

    No doubt this is good equipment, but $50. for a lighter is pretty darn high. UCO match case comes with matches & extra strikers for about half the price of Exotac, and it's waterproof, international orange & has an o ring too. I think the cover for the bic is a great idea, but I'm having reservations about the hold open feature as it could cause problems especially for someone that uses a bic everyday like to light their cigarettes.

    you can get an electric stove top lighter at most gas stations and truck stops for about $20 its entirely wind proof as it works like an actual stove top being a metal coil that heats up to red hot in a matter of seconds and is the size of a usb memory stick! NOW that being said, it does have a few downfalls such as it is electric and requires a recharge after so many uses so in a bushcraft scenario would be bad unless you happen to carry a solar charger or power banks around. the other disadvantage is it looks near identical to a common usb drive with a male usb plug on the bottom for charging purposes theres so many ways that could be damaged and rendered unusable when the charge ran out not to mention the hazards if a child gets ahold of it.
    but honestly its a pretty decent lighter and a nice conversation piece. if the design was changed up abit and possibly a built in solar strip like a calculator it wouldnt be a bad choice for camping at least, i wouldnt trust it in a bushcraft situation but for what it is its a decent edc lighter!

      Only ever seen the clear plastic ones do that. Never had a Bic fail me unless I ran it dry. But I have to agree with Zachary, why are you holding the flame for that long? You might want to look into getting flame extenders such as trioxane, Live Fire, WetFire, fatwood, etc. Every one of those takes like 3 seconds of flame and will burn for minutes. Hell, even petroleum jelly infused cotton balls can buy you 30 seconds to a minute by putting just a second or two of flame to it.

    Eh there products are pretty pricey and in my opinion not worth the money, good it's made here but to much. I bought a couple of there stuff thinking it would be amazing but it's just like everything else just a higher price. A Ferro rod with striker I think was like 15bucks steel was like maybe 2in and the handle is like 3 to 4in wasn't impressed for that kind of money ,good review though for sure.

    • @WayneRogersOutdoors
      @WayneRogersOutdoors Před 6 lety +1

      I have used denatured alcohol in a bic type lighter in a pinch and it does work but the alcohol on the wick evaporates so fast when you uncap it that it's just not practical. The lighter fluid being a petroleum product doesn't evaporate so quickly.

      @Mateusz Bartosik Bullshit, just hold a Bic in your fist for 10-15 seconds and it will fire up. Even if you just dropped it in a frozen creek, just shake it out and blow off any excess moisture from the striker wheel then hold it in your fist for a few seconds and they work. Been using them for years.

    All these “boy’s” complaining about the price tag, but their willing to spend $50 bucks on some other stupid crap they REALLY don’t need, cracks me up! They obviously don’t work with tools for a living, and they don’t understand quality. So go ahead boys, buy your toys. And one day, when you grow up, and finally wake-up, it’s about buying things that will last your entire life, not buying something numerous times thinking your saving money when in reality, your not.
