  • Exotac TitanLight Water / Air proof lighter - Review - ZimCo Survival
    The new Exotac Titanlight is a mix of a win and a fail all put into a single item.
    This waterproof and air proof lighter is the perfect design for a long term liquid fueled lighter perfect for preppers or survivalists looking for a multi fuel lighter. However with that said it has 1 major flaw that keeps me from recommending it.
    Due to its waterproof and air proof nature it has a tendency to build up air pressure in the fuel chamber. at that point it forces the fuel up through the wick and causes the top of the lighter to burst into flame. Ive managed to light myself on fire multiple times :)

    My thought about the pin coming out or being loose. There's a warranty on the unit, why don't you send it back and get a replacement. All of the problems that you are stating, I have not had any of these maybe you have a faulty manufactured unit.

    This should be THE go-to video for getting some basic (and even more advanced) info on this lighter. I was amazed at how much info you supplied over and above the many videos I've already seen on this lighter! EXCELLENT presentation!
    Re the pin direction -- you are stating over and over "putting it in right" (i.e. correctly), "what happens if you put it in the wrong way vs right way" (words to that effect), etc. The key word is RIGHT! (of course you have to have the lighter oriented so that the wheel is facing you, not the windscreen). But until your video I wasn't aware that there was a directionality component involving this pin.
    You have by far the best description of the fuel leak issue of any video I've seen so far (and I've looked at a bunch of them). I'm impressed that you feel that the Zippo type avoids this problem because there is the ability for pressure to equalize around the base of the insert (you are the 1st I've seen that has suggested that as a cause-effect). I'm wondering if something like that pressure relief could be done by having a VERY SMALL hole drilled into the top of the lighter so that any pressure inside the lighter would preferentially go thru that hole instead of the wick. Not sure you would want to try that trick out on your own lighter, but just curious. I'm thinking of getting one of these myself and I might very well see if that is an option.
    An interesting side note to this leak issue is that given the number of smaller peanut lighters on the market, I've never heard of this leak / pressure problem in those smaller models. Do you have any theory as to why they don't seem to be bothered by it?
    You mention the wick but I would have liked to have seen HOW you change the wick. I wasn't aware that such a thing was even possible.

    If you fill it up the whole way leave it sit with the top cap off for a few minutes. This eqaulizes the pressure.

    Exotac posted a video with demonstration on camera of EXACTLY how to fill this lighter and what to do to equalize the pressure after you fill it. 2 capfulls from dead dry. After that if it starts to go dry , one capfull. The REASON a Zippo doesn't have a pressure issue is because its an OPEN system , it EVAPORATES. If you drown a Zippo and light it with lighter fluid everywhere, you get what you get. Same applies here😂A Zippo will leak if YOU over fill it and lay it down, or stick it in your pocket. The Toehill and Maratac XL Peanut are great lighters, but there are matches that are more wind resistant.If you don't know how to use common sense and use any fluid lighter as a damn candle, instead of buying ...IDK...a candle..you get what you get. Don't over fill them, wipe your hands and the lighter off

    Great review. Regarding the problem of over-filling, be careful and don't overfill perhaps? How about underfilling slightly? It looks like a great lighter to use. Interesting about the Zippo wicks - how about a piece of cotton string of same thickness? It's not the be all or end all that it can't use a Zippo wick. How about trying other wicks for candles or does Exotac sell wicks? (Not a big unsurmountable problem really, it's about making do as close as possible. When out in the field, one is going to have to make do if the shops aren't open. ;-) )

    The cons you mentioned are acceptable to me. The only annoying one is the zippo wic. Frankly sounds lie your wanting idiot proof, but right now I don't see much better considering most peanuts doing have the woodblock and don't have as much fuel capacity.

    Excellent review. I was considering getting one of these until I saw this. I didn't realize it had so many issues. I'll stick with my Peanut XL.

    Ummm...read and follow directions is a good thing...Overfill? Turn it cap DOWN...take cap off, pour excess fuel back into lighter, screw on bottom, wipe hands and lighter..ignite...you know which way the pin goes in IF you paid attention to how it came out. Ever use a Zippo...?? Instructions say "Wipe your hands and lighter"... no it does not take hours for the pressure to equalize. Oring replacement can be had at hardware store. Wics and pins are available from Exotac cheap...A Zippo holds 90 drops to fill...guess where over 90% of that fuel goes...into the air. Lighter fluid is $100 a gallon😂

    So basically, this functions great if I under fill it slightly?
    I am awaiting the arrival of one from my Massdrop order.

    $50 to light yourself on fire? Hey, where can I get in line for that? ;-) $50 buys a whole hell of a lot of good butane Scripto piezo lighters, my favorite. Will light even if you store it overnight in a glass of water. They say they don't work at altitude or in cold weather, but I live near 8000 feet in a ski area and I've never had any difficulty.

    how long does one filling last you. like how many lights?

    • @ZimCoSurvival
      @ZimCoSurvival  Před 6 lety

      On average I would say about 30. Each one having a 10 second burn duration. I could be wrong but with one cap full of fluid that's about what I get

      I’ve had one since December, I probably overfilled mine, but mine lasted way longer than 30x for 10 seconds. It holds a lot of fluid.......love the lighter though. And great review, I had the same problem with lack of info

      Not a problem! I was so hoping that it would be the perfect combination of a peanut lighter and zippo. Unfortunately it fell very short!

  • @probablyinconsistent4756
    @probablyinconsistent4756 Před 9 měsíci

    Maybe dont overfill the lighter? This happens with all lighters that use lighter fluid. Exotac even has a video showing how much fuel to put in and warning not to overfill. You cant complain about not knowing something if you purposely ignored instructions.

  • @Francois_Dupont
    @Francois_Dupont Před 4 lety +2

    i agree with you, for 50$ it is shameful to sell such badly designed product. Exotac say to only use 2ml of fuel in it. 2MILLILITER!! this is ridiculous from a lighter this big.

      @Francois_Dupont Před 2 lety

      @JohnnySilverfoot i really wanted to buy one. i like the color and aluminium design.
      sadly for this size, price and functionality i rather just haul a mini-BIC and a ferro rod (for backup).

      Even with just two cap fills it lasts for months with normal use.
      How does that work for you with your zippo??? Not hardly.

      Not a bad design....why don't you try reading the dirrections and pay attention to detail when field stripping the unit slick.
