Sony Z90: When an a7 III or GH5 Won’t Do?

  • Even for us hybrid guys, sometimes a dedicated camcorder is the better option -- especially when it's the Z90 with its punching-way-above-its-weight-class, one inch sensor with phase detect hybrid autofocus lifted directly from the Sony RX10 Mark IV. The image quality (IQ) is stellar, sensor working hand-in-glove with the outstanding Zeiss Vario-Sonnar f/2.8-4 lens -- at least in good light. The pricing is so aggressive and the camera so good that Canon and Sony have had to lower the prices of their competing models.
But the ergonomics and software interface -- collectively, the user experience (UX) is frustrating. Sigh.

Good morning, everyone. A number of you have asked for / lamented the absence of / specific comparisons to hybrid cameras. But please check the links below, where I do in fact compare earlier versions of this sensor found in the RX10 Mk III and Z150 to the a6300 and FS5! The primary difference between the sensor in the ‘90 & RX10 IV on the one hand and the earlier version in the Z150 & RX10 III is phase detection AF. Please check them out!

I run a food media channel and currently shoot content on the A7S and A7SII, had the Sony VG10 a couple years ago and always wanted to return to the camcorder form factor so I don't have to deal with issues like crappy battery life and limited record times when shooting episodes. This camera piqued my interest but I was unable to find a decent enough review of it until now. Thank you for such an in-depth review of the camera. It's all the information I needed to help me in my decision making process.

I got the Sony Vx-2000 which I think I have had since the late 90's and it gets a lot of respect in the skateboarding industry but it is slowly deteriorating and this thing looks like it would be the ultimate skateboard camera. I love the old school feeling of that top handle while filming runs versus all this new DSLR with handles and phones, etc. Old school is my preference but I need to get what would be the ultimate skate cam to replace my VX-2000 and also the better quality image of course and this looks like the ultimate. Thanks for the awesome info.

Hugh, I am very impressed with your unique style of reviewing the Z90! In a short review, you touched on all(?) the salient uses of the little gem. Two of my gurus agree with you. I have been eyeing the Z90 since it was born. I am semi-retired now after 30 years of photography and video, I am like a kid at Christmas, expecting a Z90 one way or another. Nice discussion. I have no need for the multi cam functionality of the z90, but i was seriously looking at the nx80 or canon xf400 for my work. The majority of it is weddings, but i also do a little commercial work. The only reason i haven't pulled the trigger is because of the bad lighting conditions i have to contend with and i like to have that blurry background for some of my shots. I know i can get it by zooming in some, but it may not be possible when i really need it. I get tired of fiddling with lenses and missing moments as a result with my current cameras. Was thinking of getting this and keeping a mirrorless on my shoulder to switch when i need it. I dunno just thinking out loud :)

Just bought this camera two weeks ago and I'm very happy coming from the sony x70 that is its predecessor. I've owned a BMPC 4K too and I can tell I have a good point of comparisson speaking of quality image and the z90 is amazing. For the depth of field there are a few tweks you can do with the built-in nd filters and playing around with zoom and light if you know how to do it so thtat's not a problem. Maybe this is the perfect documentary camera or promotional web video camera aside of course its broadcast capabilities. Thanks for your review it was very helpful for me!

I just picked this camera up in March and I am more than pleased with it. There is a bit of a learning curb , but like you stated in your video, dedicated camcorder videographers take the time to figure it out and keep going without complaining. I come from a news back ground and while the Dslr/mirrorless cameras produce great images they just plain suck for my work flow. This camera came highly recommended by a former news shooter turn B&H salesman. I was very hesitant at first but I decided to give it a try because of some reviews and the price of course. I can tell you that It was a very good pick up. I think if more mirroless/dslr shooters try this camera more than a few will be converted. Unlike those cameras this little baby has nearly everything you need in a package that is not much bigger , maybe even smaller once you rig those other units out.

You can get an XLR adapter for the AX700. It's not a handle, but it does the job for audio. This could actually be more useful than the handle for the Z90 and NX80 since it is also compatible with the a7 III, etc.

I feel that Canon have taken a step in the right ergonomic direction with the XC10 and XC15, by incorporating a swiveling grip. Traditional camcorder handling meant that the wrist was in a neutral position at or near eye level; but a swiveling grip means being able to achieve comfortable neutral position at any level. I'd love to see a Sony with a similar form factor to the XC10.

I used to have the z90 and it was incredible. I sold it to get the gh5 and it was a good move but I am missing it and I'm going to get the ax700 and I'm sure you know a very similar unit and good little brother of the z90. But there has to be some kind of pic profile in place doesn't there. It's hard to remember. I took Doug Jensens course but that was 2 years ago. Doug is the best and I enjoyed you interview with him. Your videos are always thought provoking so thank you.
I am always frustrated by the lack of attention companies pay to the needs of their consumers.
I want to spit nails every time I launch FCP X.
I recently by chance have started filming live events, interviews, lectures and salon type venues and although I love the video quality of my 5d IV there were just too many negatives with the record time limit and I was not prepared to buy another manufacturer GH5 and lens combo and still not have everything I wanted.
I looked around at what Canon had to offer and my friend who works at ABELCINE recommended the XF400. It only took me a few minutes with the camera, the poor LCD and the ridiculous interface to realize that I could never use it and make it work.
I spent the next 24hrs doing tons of research and then went to B&H where the Z90 jumped out at me among about 30 or 40 cameras that they had going live on display. Just 30 minutes with the sales rep was all I needed to realize that it would do everything I needed it to and more. That combined with the very reasonable 4k 60mbps codec made me pull the trigger and know that I could just leave that on permanently. While it is no where near the beauty of footage I can get out of the 5d, it seems like a perfect choice for my needs.
I will post an update after using the camera for a few weeks.

Another terrific gear review which, as always, is about more than just the gear. You touched on many different subjects here - of course. But you really got my attention with the rant, I mean critical analysis, of the user experience. I have an a7mk3 and an FS5. Yes, the FS5 delivers great image quality and there's the variable ND filter, and blah blah blah and even though I bought the camera with the intent of shooting in 4K - I really like the image quality in 1080p HD - rendered in a 10 bit 4:2:2 color space. But what I hate - is actually using the camera. Even with all the buttons and dials - the camera is still unintuitive and frustrating and really lousy for use on the fly - unless, of course, you simply opt for the AUTO button - which I never do because I don't like the way it exposes. When face detection is activated - and I almost always use it - you LOSE ACCESS TO MANUAL CONTROLS. This is insane. My workaround is to hit the rocker zoom - which - hey - deactivates the face detection and allows for access to the settings. How staggeringly stupid this is!. The other work-around is to deactivate the autofocus - an even more horrendous choice. Then there's the stunningly lousy EVF and LCD. I mean, Wow - they are from another era. And I could go on. But I won't Better to re-reference your video. The FS5 should be the perfect run and gun camera. But it's not. I've been taking the hybrid A7mk3 everywhere instead. I know exactly where the shutter, aperture, and ISO dials are - face detection (and eye AF) stay intact - it's easy to carry around and something close to a pleasure to use - most of the time. And I really do like the image quality I'm getting. A lot. 8 bit and 4:2:0 meaning less than nothing to me in the context in which it's used and displayed. The question for me is: what does a future upgrade purchase look like? Is it the FS5mk2? Well, of course it isn't. There needs to be some joy in the experience of capturing footage - I need to not have to worry - in fact, not have to THINK - to use the camera well and enjoy the experience. As of now - I have no intention of buying another Sony camcorder until they completely revamp the menus and dials, and functionality of the camera. I eagerly await the a7Smk3, and I hope SONY doesn't blow that.

PS, I remember a conversation I had with a Sony Stills manager at the SMPTE..letting off my steam with regards to 'consumer'-UX and artificial feature limitations in the Alpha line. He was on the same stall as the 'Pro-video' guy. But he had no compellings answers. I really felt sorry for the guy. The silo departmental culture of Sony was so obvious, and imo it's the biggest problem holding itself back, apart from not listening to its dedicated professional user base. Waiting for A7S3..

I was hesitant to start watching a 30min product review video but I'm glad I did. It's actually very good. I'm glad you addressed the ergonomics issues as it seems to be the one thing camera manufacturers don't get or don't want to get, at least on lower end cameras. Why the zoom-focus selector switch at the place where camera operators are used to find the ND filter switch? Why the zoom-focus selector switch rather than two rings? In truth, who needs to use zoom via ring on this type of camera at all, if the rocker switch is well designed and works right? It's almost as if they take sick pleasure in shortening the lives of camera people with shitty ergonomics :/ Anyway, subscribed :)

So now that it’s been a year and the NX80/AX700 are at the top of my list (and the AX700 does 1080p60 just in a different format. What’s the verdict? As it only records 2 channel audio (rather than 4) I’m struggling to justify the $400 price bump from the 700 to the 80 for just the Handle XLR and ustream when as you well said CZcams streaming over OBS on a laptop is more likely my thing (a hobbyist). If it recorded 4 channel audio the handle is worth it but at present I’ll record XLR audio separately and use the onboard 2 channels for the camera Mike surround audio or a small show 3.5mm Rhode Mike. What am I missing to justify not just getting the AX700?

That's a perfect application for a camera like this. You should keep in mind that you won't get as shallow depth of field on the Z90 due to the smaller sensor, so if you're expecting your footage to match up perfectly, it won't. If that is irrelevant to you, then for everything else, it would make perfect sense as a B cam for the FS7.

BTW, that's not unique for CZcamsrs. If something matters, say it clearly like it matters.
BTW, I loved hearing that opinion "Who cares. You got the shot. Move on." This is a GREAT review!!! I love the way you list the attributes and the deficits all together, by subject. Best review I've seen yet! I'm wrestling between an NX-80 and a FS-5. Price is my main concern, portability next. I shoot outdoor, mostly video of trains. I've shot with a Sony CX-900 since 2014 and love it. the Z90/NX80 are basically the same form factor as the 900 with vast imaging improvements, from what I've read and seen. (Also, refreshing to see a CZcamsr that doesn't open with "What's up guys?" Ha!)

    • @danieldougan269
      @danieldougan269 Před 5 lety

If price and portability are your main concerns, then the NX80 is the clear winner. It's cheaper and smaller. It also has image stabilization for run-and-gun shooting.
The FS5 is more of a cinematic camera. But, since you shoot outdoors, you might appreciate the variable ND filter. The NX80 just has a clickable ND filter.

While I do my own post in a novel way, after setting up profile 10 with HLG, sharpened the profile and a number of other adjustments, the output is so good that the main reason for doing any post on it is to reduce the bitrate for CZcams. I don't want the handle on the top as the shoe mount happily handles a Rode mike or a light for close range. The ND filters are very good and with a bit of practice you can shoot hundreds of clips with no stuff ups.

Can we please talk about the growing number of CZcamsrs now in this “pro-Sony” review loop. What gets me is that yes, every Sony release has the best features and specs around, but a lot of the time they’re just adding the things that the customers were asking for, without respect for designing it right. Which sucks.

Do you think the Sony AX700 is on par with the Z90?

This video camera SONY is my dream, which will improve the quality of video content.
Please tell me what your price is on the secondary market, as my budget is very limited.
Although there is a war in Ukraine now and the priorities for life and help are completely different, there is still a desire to do something, and I want to improve the quality of video content.

[CHRIS] Hugh, love and watch pretty much all of your videos. But I have to say that the stills grabs looked pretty bad, and even this CZcams video shot on the Z90 looked...underwhelming, which is putting it nicely. Almost soft or blurry. Am I crazy here?

Two Bit da Vinci I can’t judge that :) But I can tell you what I see in my screen here in the bat cave. Some might call it artificially sharp; but one can always tone that down if desired. Colors pop without being off. I find that colors and IQ can change dramatically from one display to the next - I always view the final cut on a 42” plasma and a 55” LED TVs, and have given up trying to grade for anything other than my 5K Retina.
