If you are in a property that its staff to guest ratio is 3:1 or 4:1 you surely can afford to be more generous to the staffs that is taking care of you (if you decide to give tips at all)

What ever you want from the Asean country, Indonesia has it, even better . Better in term of the diversity of the cultures, people, the beauty & richness of the nature, culinary, tourism interst and the facility of it. You can choose the wild life style, the cosmopolitan style or in between. This because Indonesia is the root cultures and the origins if it’s neighbours country. In the ancient time, Malaysia, S’pore, Brunei even Thailand & Burma are one with Indonesia land.
And under Majaoahit Kingdom era ( 500 years ago in east Java - Indonesia), they all under Majapahit Kingdom rules.
But from many years, Indonesia always under rated because of the location. And some how always been tackled by the neighbors countries above it, ( Thailand, Malaysia, S’pore) .
Directly or not, they tried to blocked the tourist from Indonesia. Even many Indonesian art & cultures like wayang, batik & gamelan music or food was claimed by the neighbors ( but ofcours the original one always better)
Coz, once the tourists know how beautiful, divers & rich Indonesia is, they all will come straight to Indonesia & spent their money in what we call : ‘ the emerald of the equatorial’ : Indonesia.

7:38 Papuans are not only culturally different from West Indonesia but also racially, western Indonesia is Melayu/Austronesian and Eastern Indonesia specially Papua is Melanesian.
There are many conflicts between western and eastern Indonesia about racism, justice and others, many Papuans are considered not developed and left behind from others. Many Papuans are limited in their voice and their rights. There're still many bad people who are narrow-minded who are still racist to Papuans. And the beauty standard in Indonesia is that light skin is pretty, where Papuans have dark skin naturally from birth, it mean they can't be pretty? That's part of racism too tho!, beauty standards like this must be eliminated. I admit that the Indonesian government is bad in dealing with things like this, maybe that's why Papuans don't feel that they are is Indonesian citizens.
But it's not just in Indonesia like this, in Turkey too, in Turkey there are many problems between Turkish and Kurdish people about racism and justice too.
But don't worry for my brothers and sisters in Papua, Now, in this era, the government and the president are trying to build proper infrastructure in Papua so that Papua will be more advanced. And now there are many people who are forward thinking who want accept my brothers and sisters in Papua. Even now, many people like Papuan songs ❤️
Remember, Not because their skin color they're considered bad, they're not pretty, they are left behind, it's just the thinking of people who have small brain, racist and radical.
And remember our motto "Bhineka tunggal ika" - "unity in diversity".
All of these problems need a process ❤️

16:02 generally, tipping is not a culture in Indonesia, although you're allowed to give some if you want to. Tipping in a restaurant is only expected when you go to an affluent one, but I guess they can't sue you whatsoever if you don't give. To a bellboy in a hotel, you can simply give them $ 1-2. To a taxi driver, the amount is totally up to you.
21:15 moving the capital is not a new thing compared to many other countries including the USA who has the same history. Indonesian capital has also been moved twice, to Yogyakarta and to Bukittinggi in the war era a few years after Indonesian independence. However, the big problem is because the state does not have enough money to do such a big work. Moving the capital means we have to move the general assembly office and any other offices and the president just forced his idea without really knowing what he's talking about. So yeah, your opinion is right but probably not really realistic based on the context of the current situation here. Still, we wish you to stay here for a few months just to experience all the things in Indonesia, good or bad, first hand. Take care.

I think one of the reasons why there's so little info about Indonesia is because the people, we're so self-sustained to the point that we don't feel the need to go outside of Indonesia. We have nice weather to live, we only have like 2 seasons which both are never too extreme, we're rich of flora and fauna, we got oil, we got the seas, and we got crazy good soil, so yeah I guess we're just very comfortable living here. I guess that's why you won't see a lot of Indonesians overseas and even if you see Indonesians people around you, you'll assume that they're maybe Filipino or Thai 😁
About Jakarta sinking, it's because of the infrastructure the Dutch Colonials left. When Jakarta was still Batavia, the VOC tried to shape Batavia identical to what they're used to have in the Netherlands. So more canals, something like that. And water was also heavily monopolized by them, making the locals with no access to clear water. To solve this, the locals get their own water from the ground, literally digging a well or even a borewell. You know what happens if you keep taking the water from the soil for hundreds of years? The ground sinks.

    • @marymadelleine
      @marymadelleine Před 3 lety

I don't think Dutch infrastructure ruined Jakarta. It's due to Jakarta's post Independence development that has ruined everything. When building the city, the past Indonesia government changed all the already built architecture and infrastructure made by the Dutch. The Indonesia's govt dropped off the tram lines, abandoned the waterways, didn't build an integrated water sanitary/ditch and else. Moreover, the govt seemed to overlook the massive construction of skyscrappers and malls in Jakarta since the post Soekarno's era. I believe Dutch people had measured how Jakarta should be build before they built it and had integrated waterways and different transportations to make the every corner of the city more reachable for the society.

I kinda diasgree with native Papuans being distinct than other Indonesians when in reality, North Moluccas, Moluccas, and East Nusa Tenggara are also black melanesian Oceania people. Though most of them are now called Austromelanesians.
But the fun fact is, most native Papuans, especially who live in coastal areas, such as Fakfak, Biak, Merauke, Nabire, Jayapura etc had a lot of inter racial marriage to comer from other islands, especially Java, Sumatran (Minang), Celebes (Bugis, Buton) etc. So, stating a whole island citizen of West Papua and Papua (Indonesia) as Melanesia is not a correct statement.
Indonesia is a trans continental country, that once colonized by the Dutch (Dutch East Indies).
And talking about politics, most Papuans can become ministers because they're Indonesians too. I dont know about could they became president or not, but there are at least 4-5 presidents came from outer of Java islands, such as Soekarno (Bali), Megawati (Minang), Habibie (Celebes), etc.

11:03 that's KM Tidar. it's like a "cruise ship". it has a bar, a cinema, a mosque, a medical clinic and a restaurant. The ship has a length of about 120 m and a width of about 20 m and can accommodate about 2,500 passengers, an average speed of about 18-22 knots, and consists of 12 floor decks. It was part of 15 other large ships that had been built in Germany in the mid-80s to 90s. it takes about 2 weeks to go from the west to east side of Indonesia in one trip. Before the heyday of commercial aviation which began in the late 90s, these large ships had become the main means of inter-island transportation in Indonesia.

24:30 The Thing about indonesia and Malaysia uniting into one country is already a concept of "Greater Indonesia" (read more on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Indonesia)
Both us from Indonesia and Malaysia share the same dialect of Malay so we can easily understand each other. Most of the issue about doing this would be the uniting two very different government ideology together, due to this our first president with the help of the soviet union had the ambition to unite whole Southeast asia (pretty much every country here Japan had its hands on) into indonesia since After the end of World War II, the idea of Greater Indonesia was little heard until more than five years later. On 17 August 1950 President Sukarno officially dissolved The United States of Indonesia and replaced by an unitary Republic of Indonesia. On 28 September 1950 Ambon was invaded and incorporated into the Republic Indonesia. which didn't go as planned when Indonesia accepts the formation of malaysia after their victory heavily supported by Australia UK, NZ, Brunei, Canada and USA. US Canada Being the main supporter and the rest contributing heavily to fight off Indonesia thats only backed by the soviets. In the end 248 killed UK Gurkha AUS NZ military was killed defending malaysia with 180 wounded. with indonesia taking the lost of 590 deaths and 222 wounded (quite impressive loss in those 3 years considering indonesiaahas only been a country for 17 years without direct soviet help in the conflict) So in the end even tho both nation are very close and works together a lot, unifying Singapore Indonesia and Malaysia would be near impossible in the coming years

Indonesia and Malaysia has a totally different political system as well as history. For stater, Malaysia was under British rule, thus its system of government is modeled on British system where the head of the majority party becomes the Prime Minister while the head of state is the King (they have 9 of them each taking turn to the throne for a period of 5 years each time) Indonesia was under Dutch rule and experimented with different system and later on decided to model it on American system where the President is the executive power and the head of state. Malaysia has an affirmative action type of law where the Malay have special priviledges over other race and the term Ketuanan Melayu which means Malay are first class citizen. Indonesia on the other hand prefers a model where every one are legally on the same standing and equal. Malaysian law is heavily influence by Islam where it is illegal for a Muslim to become Murtad ie. leave Islam, while Indonesian law does not interfere with people’s religious choice. There are still many differing political and social norms between the 2 countries.

You can tip people in restaurant, but most people dont do this because its not coerced to tip the waitress since they get a proper payment to work in the restaurant.

There are a lots of a compound problems that affects the sinking of Jakarta,
most of the main reason are the bad water piping system that comes from Dutch colonialization era, with a muddy soil type plus littering habit that floods the rivers with a bunch of trash.
When you combine all of those with a rainy season that comes every year its a living hell cause half of the area in jakarta will flood if not managed properly by the water drainage system.

If you are a captain of a fkin giant cargo ship, you may docking the ship on singapore, but you can't go straight from singapore to china. Why? Because the sea is too shallow. You have to go to the south, then choose one between two route. If your ship is too heavy, go to the sunda strait and sail along the southern sea, entering lombok strait, sailt to the strait between kalimantan and sulawesi (forget the name) then say hello to the pacific.
You see, lombok strait of indonesia is the only option for shortcut to the big ship like maersk cargo ship. You can go take a trip from PNG, but it will take so much cost.
By this, indonesian government can actually using this narrow strait as opressing tool for major country as the nantuna sea only accesible by lightweight cargo ship, to not messing with indoneaia's sovereignty.
Especially to the australian who always act like sneaky boi for the past decade

In Irian Jaya (West Papua), the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (Free Papua Movement) has been fighting for either independence or a merger with Papua New Guinea ever since incorporation into Indonesia became final.
The Dutch had promised the Irianese they would have independence someday, but then-President Sukarno pushed Indonesia’s claim to West Irian.
Indonesian troops invaded in 1962 and the United States helped prod Indonesia and the Netherlands into negotiations under auspices of the United Nations.
Jakarta was awarded administrative control of West Irian in 1963, with the understanding that a free election would determine the former colony’s status. In 1969, tribal chiefs voted unanimously to incorporate it into Indonesia.
This “act of free choice” was criticized at the time for not being a vote of the people.
One of the global mining companies, based in Phoenix, Arizona, Freeport to exploration, mining and processing ore containing copper, gold and silver in the highland areas of Mimika District, Papua Province.
Most people, often perceive that Papua, Indonesia’s eastern most region, is one of the most underdeveloped and dangerous islands in the archipelago.
This is the result of a development policy during the New Order regime that neglected the eastern part of Indonesia for decades and only focused on building the island of Java, where more than half of Indonesia’s 260 million population live. Such a policy has created economic inequality between the eastern and the western parts of Indonesia, and have caused a number of problems. These include poverty, lack of infrastructures development, poor bureaucratic performance, corruption, and separation movements.
After Soeharto’s administration collapsed in 1998, violence and issues of disintegration emerged. The Indonesian government then offered special autonomy to several provinces, including Papua in 2001. The special autonomy funds for Papua and West Papua have been increasing by 505% from Rp1.38 trillion (US$95.5 million) to Rp8.3 trillion since 2002.
Human development index to measure achievement in key dimensions of development including life expectancy, education and standard of living, also increased by 7.8% from 2012 to 2017. The figure is above the national average at 4.6%.
Despite such progress, poverty still lurks. In Papua, 27.62% of total population or around 917,681 people is poor. Meanwhile, 25% of the population in West Papua or around 214,000 still live in poverty.
