- I discuss the detection of gravitational waves with my wife, Lianne.
A very exciting development for this video: Someone has asked if they can add subtitles! No one has ever asked to do this for a video of mine before.
So now, thanks to the wonderful Ger Hanssen, this video is more accessible. Just turn on Closed Captions to see his great work.

I love the part that Steve says: "It's an explanation of gravity, that requires gravity".
Thank god I'm not alone:)
YES. Me too.
Me tooo
It's like explaining intermolecular forces with springs
@@chiranjitray760 Exactly 👍
It’s like explaining what sweetness is, by saying “try eating some of this sugar. If something were sweet, it would kind of taste like that.”
Poor Lyra, she's gonna grow up looking to engage other children in conversations about the properties of light, particles and massive objects, and they'll just be looking back at her like, "wut?”
Every nerd's every day. Sucks.
Lol I have been alive 12 years and FINALLY found another nerd that understands me at all 😂
My wife appreciates that she's not the only partner who has these deep conversation/explanations.
Great format, great explanation
I just stumbled upon your video now, four years after it was posted and I must say it restored a lot my depleted trust in humanity and what couples can be. I'm in a rough patch with my loved one and you just showed me all the things worth fighting for... Respect, intelligence, innocence, beauty, curiosity... I wish you all the best in the world. And, thank you :)
Damn, hope you’re doing better 🤗
@zet0korp how’s everything now?
It’s been 3 years since your last comment.
I like this type of video a lot.
Second that.
Thirded that
Fourthed that
It’s a podcast.
You needn’t watch, sound only.
And she is a good foil to pose questions. Questions that address understanding.
"Let's call the whole thing off"
"Ha ha ... what?"
That was the best joke in the entire video
for a double split second there, she thought he was talking about the marriage... The look on her face was terrified.
@@lukearts2954 that’s what I thought he was talking about. I know this is mad late but I’m confused haha
@@nugboy420 it's lyrics from a song, lol. How's that for timing?
More of this please! I could do this ALL day. Seeing you two together chatting is the most endearing and engaging way to learn. Love it
Well... I'm planning to do a live q&a with Lianne on Patreon. You need the link to my Patreon you say? It's here: stvmld.com/svar3k8z. We might do a video on here at some point in the future too! Thinking of doing one where she explains a linguistics thing to me.
Really enjoyed this. Watching you work out how to explain something this complicated was very informative. The light tone and the back and forth helped me see how I can be better when I attempt scientific exposition.
+Mark Stanbrook thank you!
@@SteveMould This is a very unique video format that I wholeheartedly would love to see more, deeply educational, and you trying to explain concepts directly to someone really was another thing. You're a great explainer, love your work.
This is a great example of how a wife can help a man become better than he is on his own.
@@jcnash02 I think a girlfriend could do it just as well, don't you?
@@matthewbartsh9167 Good friends can help each other become better than they would on their own, so of course a girlfriend could.

I really like this experimental format! Lianne asks great questions and seems as excited to dig into the topic as you are. Have you thought about doing more videos along these lines?
+Josh Dowdell yeah, we really want to do more but it's had to find the time. I make most of my videos while she's at work! Glad you liked it! Want to do one on linguistics next cos that's one of the things Lianne knows a lot about and I don't!
Love the video format.
And love how Lyra was confused about why she has to wave goodbye, but played along anyways.
The level of multi tasking when they summed up the theory and counting the clowns from.lyras book was exceptional.
Really enjoyed this. Very long, so might not make sense to do that often, but very informative and engaging.
When one of your favorite youtubers comments on another one of your favorite youtuber's videos
Lol 4 years ago 25 mins was "very long" for a discussion on gravitational waves lmfao
I think the issue we all face when explaining "stuff" is most people's minds eye thinks of space as empty when it's full and has no beginning no end and time is just a human ruler.
@@liveuk yep, explaining a rule humans can apply to the universe in terms of rules and concepts defined by humans... It gets messy, but it's how progress gets continued
Hm, it's not so much an equal discussion as a very individual lesson with great questions. Still, she's basically an audience insert and it's not so much a typical conversation for the first half. The second part is much more engaging.
"Nice work Einstein!" -quote of the year 2016
-can we start looking for wormholes?

I can detect disturbance in the curiosity field! Packets of awe are being detected by my sensors!
This was fantastic, Steve. Really great to see someone take such an interest and having you there to guide them. Favourite moment for sure was "let's call the whole thing off" *laughter* "what?!" *jump cut*. Weirded a few people out by laughing a bit too loud at that!
Brilliant!
My favourite part was where Steve corrected a baby >.
@@jameslloyd2540"No, I see 3 clowns" 😂😂😂
Omg this reminds me of my boyfriend and me! Except I like to talk more about math and he likes the astronomical stuff like black holes and gravitational waves. We're also both freshman/sophomores in college so we don't have really sophisticated conversations but we try lol.
Your wife is beautiful!
I want this format in every other video on your channel!!!
Loved it very much, Steve! I totally feel like your wife learning and understanding and marvelling at every new thought understood!
I can totally relate to every one of her reactions! Thanks so very much for such a kind and beautiful explanation of a whole array of topics that really was a rollercoaster of knowledge! This is not an action movie or suspense flick but you got me on the edge of the seat the entire time!!
I felt a great disturbance in the Field

Hey, Steve. Just found your channel and I must say I am absolutely blown away. This was a wonderful video and I do quite like the format. It reminded me of the days when I used to sit with my friends and discussed this sort of stuff. Keep up the good work!
I really liked the discussion format. I hope you do more stuff like this that shows the process of understanding instead of lecture style.
I really loved this video format. So casual and makes it really easy to understand. The way the thought process comes out is so similar to my own experience and having that in this type of video is awesome. Wouldn't want you to stop your usual format but more of these format would be awesome.
Brilliant format. Seemed so natural that at some points I kept wanting to intervene! Hope to have the pleasure of watching more of these conversations (rather than discussions) on your wonderful channel.
That was brilliant, thanks, Steve! I can't believe how comprehensible and rather poetic it all became. It was a clear and fascinating chat.
(Also, excellent pointing and naming by Lyra with her book- she's a poppet.)
Looking forward to the next FOSN tour.
Steve, you are my hero! That has always been my biggest gripe about the ball and sheet explanation. Literally word for word.
First came Plato; then Xenophon; Lucian; followed later by Galileo; and today comes Steve Mould!
This is a brilliant format! It really follows the way a newbie would approach a problem and helps to reexamine the steps of understanding.
I couldn't stress more how much I love this video format, I'd definitely love to see more of this, even more than any other kind of formats you made, and even more than most formats of educational videos I've ever seen.
Explaining things to other people is an amazing way to understand things yourself, like Feynman stated. And I love to do that, I'm pretty curious and savvy, and I like to help and explain things, to my mother, friends, strangers, so I saw myself and a oassion of mine in this video, a format I never saw in videos.
You guys helped me to understand more the gravitational waves, and Steve, you're a GREAT explainer, even better than what I thought of you before. And your wife is as you said very curious, and also very smart. I really appreciate your video, and I can't stress enough how much I'd want to see another of your discussions, that reminds me a lot of me and my also curious mother.
Although the video is much longer than usual I quite liked the conversation format. As an expert in a field you sometimes don't think you need explaining some things and this kind of format helps in this regard. I learned more from this conversation than from many articles that are floating around.
Loved the video! Nice casual format but layed out logically so it was easy to follow. Keep up the great content!!
I know it's 5 years later but please do more of this! I enjoyed so much!
google just auto slipped this into my playlist.....
and so i just cant help but say, again...... jesus steve.
I dont know HOW just standing next to her, you make your wife look SO fantastic.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK SIR!!
(with all due respect. to everyone..... yall are both as beautiful in my eyes and thank you for everything you do for the community. fo real. my hero.)
I really liked this video. Watching you two discuss I get to see multiple viewpoints and descriptions of the same thing. It's very helpful.
please make more of these discussion video's, this one made me really understand it so much better!
This is the first video I watched from your channel and yes, I really like this kind of format! In this video the information that you provide are just so simple that everyone can understan it! Please make other video like that and really please make the subtitles because they really helped me (I'm italian). Now I live you to see more video from your channel, always a joy to find someone who can explain such difficul argument in a such easy way :D
P.S. Why don't you start a format where people choose an argument that want to learn more about? Do you already do it?
+TMSMM450BD thank you! Yes I'm planning to do more explainer videos. Good idea to get suggestions from viewers.
I love these type of conversations. I find myself talking about things i find interesting with my friends and family all the time
This is a such a good format! I hope to see more videos like this.
Great video and discussion. I learnt a lot out of it.
I usually try to hang around and listen to people discussing interesting stuff when they don't mind
This format is refreshing Steve, hope to see more of it and your lovely family, stay safe my friend!
You should do more videos of this kind !! And I should say it You are one of the best "explainers" i'hv ever seen in my life you make complex things sound very easy!! Thank you
Really liking the format! It's so laid back and easy to follow
I loved the format, very informative and fun! :)) More of these if you would be so kind!
Great video, really liked the format!
I loved the format. I think it's really helpful to have an interested non-expert who asks the kind of questions that I would if I was there.
I loved this video. Steve, please do more of these. I had an easy time following along with your explanation. I had actually never heard this explanation of photons in physics class.
I’ve seen lots of your vids, but this is the first time I’ve encountered Lianne. She’s delightful! I wish you’d bring back this format in current time…
I really like this format, thanks Steve.
I've been watching your stuff for a while, Steve, but only today decided to start watching your old stuff. This video, my man. This is the video I'm going to point all the Electric Universe and antiscience crowd to. It explains everything so beautifully, even down to "What is a theory?" I hadn't realised how long you've been rocking the science communicator thing, had no idea you were on Blue Peter. All power to you, my man. You're my favourite CZcams science guy.
I learned so much from this. I would love see more of these.
I'm five years late to this... But its an awesome video. I love the back and forth and Lyra is a great addition at the end!
Hi Steve & Lianne. I just came across this CZcams and as it was mentioned in your "Ultimate Gravitational Waves Explanation " YT I stopped watching that and came here to watch this first I will go back to that next , I love your explanation and the way you and Lianne worked through it you could almost see the cogs moving in your head Lianne How refreshing it is to see a insightful conversation , not people shouting or acting like commercial pros , but like real people trying to understand a scientific principal Please do more of these together you both have something magical that is a gravitational wave all on its own
Tony From Western Australia
Thank you for the best description of this subject I've seen so far.
Also, thank you for the best example of a healthy relationship based on mutual respect, attraction, and admiration. I will keep this video in my heart for this very reason. Best wishes to you both.
Okokokok... pause time...
The description of what a photon is LITERALLY BLEW MY MIND!! Thank you so, so very much for surprising me with that wonderful sense of something just intuitively clicking and making sense for the very first time. I have not had it in years.
Thank you
This was so much fun! Thank you all for a great romp through spacetime. This is such a great example of how interesting the universe is, and how interesting the languages are that we have to create in order to describe it. All with a fun family moment. Just doesn't get much better.
This is fascinating not because of the subject matter but because of the pattern of your dialogue. I find myself taking your position in conversations quite often.
I loved the format. Please do more!
Your explanations were amazingly simple and clear. Awesome video.
Ok, I have watched a lot of your videos, but this one really hit home. My wife like yours if VERY smart, and yet you being a VERY good teacher still have issues trying to get concepts across to another person. I think this was one of your best videos for that kind of interaction, but still think you are a great teacher.
Brilliant! This is exactly like being at my house, except that we have 9 month old twins yelling when the toddler wakes up and I'm in full "explain" mode. Love it! Very well explained. I might just send my wife to your videos in the future ;)
I couldn't help it notice the love look on his eyes that completely took my mind off the subject and whenever I rewind I get lost for the same reasons again
Very good explanation and video. Really enjoyed the relaxed and fun talk. Nearly like being there.
Excellent video. A pleasure to watch.
Very good, Loved the format, more like this please!
Great! I really enjoyed this format
Just found this video, great explanation, love the format
A great format - almost like I was asking the questions.
I would love this format back
Loved this format
This was a great explanation and the fact that the speed of light is constant is something I hadn't really though about in the context of detecting gravitational waves, so that's a huge help. I still don't fully understand them (e.g. if they stretch matter wouldn't that produce heat and rob the gravitational wave of energy) but I'm slowly getting there!
Loved every second. The cuts were the best.
23:12 I love how she takes the moment to appreciate and process this realization. So did I. Very poetical.
Great content and unusual format that worked, congrats.
This is great. I know I'm late, but I'd like to tell you I'd be a great idea to make another one of those videos whenever you see fit nontheless.
Keep the good work up, you're awesome and really enrich my life with your way of experiencing the universe while being utterly pleased by its ways.
Cool, you're always a great help with things I'm curious about, often even with subjects I didn't realize would interest me so much xD thanks always.
It is a nice format, I really like learning through discussions, and a video like this is the closest I can get to do a live discussion with someone who understands the topic. It was also nice because your girlfriend (wife?) keeps asking some good questions that help investigate the topic.
Thanks kirstine! She's my wife. And yes, great at asking the right questions!
Great format, liked it a lot
Please do more of this Steve!
This was great! Lianne is a good inquisitor. Keep doing these informal explanations! Please.
Thanks to both of you for including Lianne in this video.
I love this format
I loved this, I would like as much of this kind of content as possible
I liked this format very much
The black holes compared to rotating dumbbells cleared many of my doubts!
Great!!!
If only I had somebody in my life to have such a conversation with!
Wife, friend, cousin, neighbor, colleague anybody...
damn that sucks. my wife is the same as steve's: she loves science and is interested in physics
You have to get out of your room first. That's an exaggeration of course - but apply it to your life accordingly :^).
'a photon is a disturbance in the electric field and magnetic field [caused by an electron]'
That's an interesting description
Robert Heath And similar for the electron. The electron is an excitation in the electron field. When you look at an electron this way, you realise that fields interact with each other through excitations.
C0deH0wler quantum field theory
but why would it travel in straight line?
@@yoppindia it travels on its equipotential line, id assume
@@MD-qh6ld Disturbence should travel in all direction, so I am not convinced on the electric and magnetic disturbence analogy, but interesting way to think about it.
Great video.
Cool format!
Really enjoyed this video. The explanation was non esoteric and as a complete novice this helped me no end.
+Mark thank you :)
I love how Steve actually extended the video to end at 25:25.
Very cool.
If man is still alive...
MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS PLEASE!
I remember watching this when it came out, and I have got to say it's a brilliant discourse on scientific discourse.
Thumbs up to the format!
6:50 - I like how the lady in the window unknowingly picks the exactly appropriate moment to swooosh in the background and - again, unknowingly - becomes the visual representation of the travel of field JUST in the time when Lianne digest that concept in a brief pause, followed by "What? Oooooh." :))))
Just bing watched like 30 of your vids. This one is in top 5.
This was awesome. Would love more when they make sense
The wy Steve Mould looks at his wife.
20:39 For some reason, I really struggled to concentrate on the discussion after this point... Making me not pay attention to a discussion of cosmology (or any physics, really) takes some doing!
Seriously, though - awwwwwww! cuuuuuuute!
She'll pick up stuff then baffle everyone at school in a few years' time. I can just picture it: primary science lesson - teacher tells class that the Earth is flying around the Sun in a circle so big that it takes a whole year to go all the way around. Lyra has a moment of revelation as a powerful early childhood memory comes flooding back and blurts out, "It's a solution to Einstein's equations of general relativity!"
+Stephen Mollett I really hope that happens!
Actually I bet she's a spectrum kid. With two sciencey parents it's pretty likely. And spectrum kids are bloody brilliant. There is some speculation that Einstein was one.
@@cerberaodollam Without being snippy.... have you published. I think being "sciencey parents" have 0 chances of increasing incidence of Autism spectrum disorders but might affect detection.
I dont know what you wanted to accomplish with your comment, but I hope you don't try attributing attributes to parties you have no knowledge on to every youtubers family you watch.
This was really nice . Loved it! It'll be cool if you can make a video where she explains something to you that you don't know.
+StanislavStratiev thank you. Yes, we really want to make a video about linguistics next which she knows a lot about and i know very little :)
It was very enjoyable and informative. Thank you.
