  • I discuss the detection of gravitational waves with my wife, Lianne.
A very exciting development for this video: Someone has asked if they can add subtitles! No one has ever asked to do this for a video of mine before.
So now, thanks to the wonderful Ger Hanssen, this video is more accessible. Just turn on Closed Captions to see his great work.

It is a nice format, I really like learning through discussions, and a video like this is the closest I can get to do a live discussion with someone who understands the topic. It was also nice because your girlfriend (wife?) keeps asking some good questions that help investigate the topic.

Robert Heath And similar for the electron. The electron is an excitation in the electron field. When you look at an electron this way, you realise that fields interact with each other through excitations.

6:50 - I like how the lady in the window unknowingly picks the exactly appropriate moment to swooosh in the background and - again, unknowingly - becomes the visual representation of the travel of field JUST in the time when Lianne digest that concept in a brief pause, followed by "What? Oooooh." :))))

She'll pick up stuff then baffle everyone at school in a few years' time. I can just picture it: primary science lesson - teacher tells class that the Earth is flying around the Sun in a circle so big that it takes a whole year to go all the way around. Lyra has a moment of revelation as a powerful early childhood memory comes flooding back and blurts out, "It's a solution to Einstein's equations of general relativity!"
