Film Synopsis -
Economic globalization has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big business and banking. It has also worsened nearly every problem we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. There are personal costs too. For the majority of people on the planet life is becoming increasingly stressful. We have less time for friends and family and we face mounting pressures at work.
The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance-and, far from the old institutions of power, they're starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm -- an economics of localization.
We hear from a chorus of voices from six continents including Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten, Michael Shuman, Juliet Schor, Zac Goldsmith and Samdhong Rinpoche - the Prime Minister of Tibet's government in exile. They tell us that climate change and peak oil give us little choice: we need to localize, to bring the economy home. The good news is that as we move in this direction we will begin not only to heal the earth but also to restore our own sense of well-being. The Economics of Happiness restores our faith in humanity and challenges us to believe that it is possible to build a better world.

Selected Endorsements -
"Helena Norberg-Hodge delivers a powerful message about globalization: It is the small, local economies around the world that are preserving traditions, cultures, and communities, and ultimately safeguarding our happiness." (Alice Waters, chef, author, and the proprietor of Chez Panisse)
"It is good news indeed to find so persuasive an explanation of our ailing world as 'The Economics of Happiness.' This film connects the dots between climate chaos, economic meltdown, and our own personal suffering--stress, loneliness, and depression. It presents the localization movement as a systemic alternative to corporate globalization, as well as a strategy that brings community and meaning to our lives." (Joanna Macy, author World as Lover, World as Self)
"'The Economics of Happiness' offers a unique global perspective on a movement that is often reduced as being too small. Not so. The film tells the story of a grassroots movement for localization that is bubbling up from the cracks of a faltering global economy, in every corner of the world. These are the real 'green shoots' to be hopeful about." (Anuradha Mittal, Executive Director, The Oakland Institute)
"I think this is the best, most holistic film I have seen on the subject." (Jacob Bomann-Larsen, Coordinator of Nordic New Economy Network)
"...it is a great honor for me to endorse such an historic work." (Samdhong Rinpoche, Prime Minister of Tibet's government in exile)
"A must-see film for the future of the planet." (Zac Goldsmith, Member of UK Parliament) - Krátké a kreslené filmy
The whole planet is a community. Things should be shared as a free source. Buliding communities might solve problems locally but it won't solve problems globally (unless everyone on the planet wors together). It is important that transition town start to appear but it won't solve the planet's problem which is corporatocracy/globalization with it's monetary based free market enterprise system. Small minority of people who support & try to spread this system have power, army, governments & control
Good points. We're trying to say that acting locally will only work if implemented in many places through the world in order to promote diversity, local self-reliance, community connections, and so on.
By building a new economics of localization, we believe that people will have more time, resources, and interest in developing connections and undoing "mental conditioning". Globalization ensures that few will have time and resources to heal emotional or social wounds.
Veri good. I think it's essential for our life!.
I think that globalization is one of many factors of the current situation today. However, just going locally and implementing the changes that you suggest on this trailer is only a bandaide over a huge, deep wound. This will not change people's very deep mental conditionings that have been instilled in us for centuries to support separation and conflict between ourselves, so that we will not work together. People need to work together and get along without control issues, hierarchy, etc.
You can always ask for donations. The fact that they are not free to watch undermines the whole message the documentary is trying to put through...
GOOOOD
@TZMWatford Z-Day looks to be amazing!
Is it worth (regarding to the goals of the film) to sell the film in 2019?
A crisis of Consciousness. Humanity curing from the delusion of Self, from there attaining the universal understanding of who we truly are. A New Order of the Ages sets Consciousness as the ground of all Being.
@xha44a,
People tend to abuse public property more than private, because there's no consequence to dumping your trash on the side of a public road. The people who manage public roads have no personal stake in the property. But if you try dumping trash on my private property there will be a heavy consequence because I have incentive to defend the condition of my own property. Your scenario is realistic as long as roads, ditches, etc. are publicly owned. That's why no property should be public.
Hola!
Isnt that intro from an Opeth-song?
This film is on a non-theatrical distribution which means that it is shown largely by community groups, organizations and events. You can find a screening, or organize one in your area, on our website.
Also, the DVD can be purchased on our website.
When is this going to be released? Thanks
@jum401 We are a very small non-profit and we are still trying to recover the costs of producing the film.
Where can I watch the whole film
Not being able to watch this movie online for free makes me unhappy.
Will be screened at Z-Day London 2012. Google it
@xha44a I know right? We pay for clean air, should only those that enjoy the cleanest of air have to pay on behalf of their own usage?
@xha44a,
What is so wrong about voluntary agreements between people who provide solutions to desires & people who voluntarily choose to use them? If you want to walk through a park, you should pay the person who manages it instead of forcing others to pay for something they did not voluntarily choose. Do you go to a restaurant & force the other customers to pay for your steak when they've chosen a salad? No? By paying for a steak the cook is much more likely to continue producing what you want.
Este precio es para comunidades en los Estados Unidos y es el precio básico. Si no pueden pagar, mandanos un correo y le daremos a usted un film gratiz. info @ theeconomicsofhappiness . org
Lo siento que no hablayo bueno espanol.
@xha44a,
A free market is just a word used to describe voluntary exchanges people make without a coercive third party intervening. It is the default condition when you don't impose a coercive government on a geographic region.
You have been trained to think that government is the only entity that can enforce property rights. It's not. In fact there is no greater threat to property rights than the government. You have been trained to think that judges can only exist in government. Not true.
Hi Steven, thanks for the suggestion! We will watch it with our TT Doorn (The Netherlands) group.Would you contact me? Frank (Big Heart)
@brob1969,
Interesting! So these BerkShares are only used locally. Probably why government allows it.
Side note: buying locally can be bad for a community. Sounds nuts. But say China produces better quality lower priced stereos. But we buy local stereos anyway. This prevents local stereo manufacturers from discovering another trade they can provide more efficiently than China, thus remaining less competitive. Also results in fewer products for every dollar (a decrease in the value of money).
@truthadvocate Why, you're absolutely right! Plutocracy for all!
If you're expecting something about academic economics, it's misleading. If you want to understand how economic policy can be adjusted to promote happiness, then it's not!
Thank you for the Kennedy info. Can't confirm who planned his murder, but if true, I wouldn't be surprised.
By "local currencies" are you talking about municipal bonds? That doesn't negate the fact that government defines what is legal tender & what is illegal. By doing so it limits competition for the dollar.
Our monetary system is maintained by the Fed & those in government. They are partners in crime. Both benefit. No single entity private or public should have coercive control over money.
Bring on Food Sovereignty in our own shires free from Govt Red Tape and rubbish legislation. It is madness not to do this. But we are in a system of Pathocracy.
@DOHC2L bah!
@muffymodo You've got to be kidding, right?
You would do well to examine more deeply the causes of famine or suffering. Capitalism, oil and coal have not translated into cessation of suffering and famine no matter what your measures.
China is one (1) example of success of industrialization. China is not a free market economy--they have heavy state intervention. And they are only a success when success is measured in terms of GDP or per capita income.
LOL they added subs when the indian guy was talking
Utter Nonsense. Comparative Advantage means all things accounted for it is FAR better/cheaper to obtain things from places where it is most efficient to produce. Who in their right mind thinks we should produce all food consumed in NYC in the area near NYC? Oranges and avocados too? Of course not. Studies have been done that prove it takes 1/3rd as much CO2 to produce tomatoes in Italy and ship them to England than to produce them in a Green House in the cold English climate (Lots of energy necessary) and consume them in England.
+Austrian Economist You offer a challenge to work on the renewable energy sources that would be practical for England. The ppm of carbon at last report that I have seen is 401. 51 ppm above the number required to not have the climate destabilized. Those who are working on an economy that is accommodating of the facts concerning sustainability are the authentic conservatives. I hope that the Indigenous Governance authorities bring actions in Geneva against fraudsters who are mis-appropriating the term "conservative" when in fact these deceptive bandits should call their political organizations "Reckless Privateers" - which would be more accurate. The Covenants that most advanced countries have signed on to, on Economic, Cultural and Social rights to self determination, should reject in clear terms the pollution of the discourse by the rightwing lying machine.
"than to produce them in a Green House in the cold English climate" // It depends on how you produce and preserve heat.
Oh, is that you Pinochet?
@brob1969,
"The government does not control our monetary system" Then how do you explain legal tender laws, (United States Code: Title 18486). How do you explain the 2007 FBI & Secret Service raid of the Liberty Dollar offices, stealing their precious metals & certificates, freezing their bank accounts & charging them with federal crimes? The government does control the monetary system by forcing us to use dollars. If it didn't we'd stop using dollars & the Fed would be powerless.
If we were to start following the dumb principles espoused in this film then all of us need to get ready for $10,000 suits
@machinesbreathe,
"private owners are faultless" That's a strawman. I would never claim that. I would also never accuse you of claiming governments are faultless. Both are composed of humans who are flawed by nature.
A monopoly over an entire industry is almost impossible to establish & sustain without government.
I don't want the corporates to own everything. Corporations are a legal entity created & protected by government. I hate them as much as you do.
Your insults make a poor impression.
Nice troll, but too obvious, 3/10
