  • Hello Everyone,
    In this video we discuss the care and breeding of Malaysian Trumpet Snails. They can be a great algae eating snail that also takes care of uneaten food. At the same time, if tank maintenance isn't done properly, their populations can grow very quickly.

    I love all my hitchhiker snails, especially the trumpets. I find they're the most helpful to the tank, and I prefer to keep them with plants otherwise the plants don't look very happy. I have three colours of them, light beige ones, darker ones with spots and stripes, and some dark brown ones. They're all beautiful, my largest ones get up to 2 cm.

    • @dinoloveremu
      @dinoloveremu Před 5 měsíci +1

      They're definitely some of the hardier snails, they're the only ones who survived a disaster with leeches I had. I had pond, ramshorn and bladder snails with them, who all died. Only about 30 adult trumpet snails remained from the four tanks, but that's still a lot compared to all the other types getting wiped out.

    • @dinoloveremu
      @dinoloveremu Před 5 měsíci +1

      I once managed to get a tiny baby onto my ruler to measure, only 2 mm in length. But I've still seen tinier babies than that one.
      There are also some interesting relative species to this one, thiara somethings? I've seen a few different ones online (mostly from snail breeders) and they look pretty neat. Apparently some of them have a larval stage though I don't think I've seen them specifically.

    If you have them as part of a clean up crew, they can be controlled. I have nerites as my main algae control. Then pond snails, ramshorns and MTS in addition to Amano shrimp. Lots of species, more competition, less population explosions!

I have an over population of ramshorns and now these little guys. They are fun to watch with the babies crawling over them, I will have to reduce numbers at some time but for now I'm letting nature take the lead.

    Thanks for doing this video. I used to have these in my first goldfish tank since they burrowed in the gravel and cleaned at night so they didn't get eaten. I miss them horribly and am looking for more. However when I tried to explain what they looked like to our local fish stores, I get a blank look. Now that I know what they are called, I try again. I'll have to get a dozen or more as my snail loving daughter is sure to want some as well. She was so pleased when she got two big ramahorn snails and now has at least eight baby snails in her 10 gallon.

    Wow this was the best and most informative video thus far for me. I went away for a weekend. I have an African Ciclid 75 Gallon tank. It’s a little behind on the maintenance due to I wanted to create some algae for a baby Pleco and catfish I put in about 3 weeks earlier. But I turned off the lights for a few hours and when I turned them back on their were at least 30-50 little things on the glass of the tank. I freaked out because I’ve never ever seen this before. I thought wtf are these mosquito eggs?? But I jumped on the internet n CZcams and bang it looks like I have trumpet snail infestation. But by listening to your info. I will try to naturally reduce them. Thank you.

    Hi Jason. You told me to let you know how I feel about my 150 gallon bare bottom discus tank after trying it out for awhile. Super easy to vacuum the fish waste because I can see where it is. The downfall would be it is not very attractive. Gravel would hide it well but be ready because it would take much longer to vacuum the substrate if you chose gravel or sand. So there are pros and cons. Also, the more you feed the more waste would accumulate. I went back to feeding them once a day and they are still growing like weeds while producing 1/2 the waste! Sincerely, Marty Borst

      Marty from my experience live plants cannot produce snails; however they seem to “hitch a ride”. What I mean to say is that unless you use tissue culture live plants, inevitably tiny snails or snail eggs may be present on live plants. There a videos on how to treat live plants to help minimize this from happening. A hydrogen peroxide dip bath is one popular way. Hope this helps.

    Jason, riddle me this, Brother.
    I have a 29g tank. Originally, I set it up for a baby arowana that got beat up in the 40g jaguar grow-out tank I just had started up. Everything in the tank was bought brand new. The decor, gravel, filters and heater. There are no live plants. Once the aro grew too big and was moved out, I decided to leave it up and running, to use as a quarantine tank should I decide to buy any new fish. So. There it was. Running but empty. I don't know for how long, but if I had to guess, it had to be over a year.
    Then.
    Out of nowhere.
    I've got snails!
    Not trumpet snails, but pest/pond snails. How can that happen? How can they just appear like that?
    (For the record, I haven't tried to get rid of them. I figure they have to be adding some kind of waste/bio-load to keep the tank cycled. Maybe not enough for a large fish or a big group of small fish, but adding new fish to an environment with a small BB colony is better than starting them out in an environment that has nothing whatsoever)

    Maybe you can help me. I have a relatively new tank (few weeks at this point), 35 gallon, lots of brown algae, I put two Malaysian trumpets in there. They're working hard. From what I've read there are a lot more females because they clone themselves, so I'm just assuming I have females.
    With that in mind, how soon could I start seeing babies? I got two because I'm very interested in seeing them grow from such a small start. (I have two red cherry shrimp in the same tank for the same reason and I'm wondering the same thing for them, tangentially). There is plenty for them to eat, so I'm expecting them to get out of control and planning on getting an assassin snail when I need to clean them up a little, depending on how I feel at that point.
