  • The United States and Chinese defence chiefs on Friday (May 31) held their first substantive face-to-face talks in 18 months at the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The premier defence summit, held by independent think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), runs from Friday to Sunday. IISS-Asia’s executive director Veerle Nouwens told CNA’s Asia First that there is a role for all countries to “play an effective role” and “try and aid in bringing down tensions”.

Why do you never ask neutral questions, CNA? Why do you think Asians see everything from the US point of view? Why dont' you ask a Chinese expert how they view US military presence in the region for once?

CNA receive order from PAP regime and PAP regime is afraid of US overthrowing them. One party system in Singapore is a very convenient excuse for the CIA to start funding rebellion. But "democracy" or not "democracy" every country in Asia is under pressure from US to take side and if US is not happy with any government, they will support the opposition by fundings

the underlying dispute between the claimant countries since 1945 is one of territorial rights over the SCS islands. After oil was discovered in the SCS in 1969, Philippines started to challenge China’s claims of territorial rights over the SCS islands, after having kept quiet for 25 years prior.
And UNCLOS is not the proper forum because it does not deal with matters of territorial disputes or to resolve issues of sovereignty, as that field is governed by rules of customary international law on the acquisition and loss of territory, which can be decided by the ICJ ONLY. No jurisdiction means no power to define the sovereignty rights over the disputed islands. If Philippines were serious about its claim, it would have commenced proceedings with ICJ and not a powerless UNCLOS tribunal.
Besides, China had already opted out of arbitration by lodging an article 298(1) UNCLOS declaration in 2006, just as more than 40 signatory countries have done.

Philippines is one of the founding member of the United Nations where China is a permanent security member. Many idiot reporters and experts are still mentioning historical excuses for the South China Sea conflict between the Philippines and China. No! Remember Obama pivot to Asia Pacific started in 2011 before Xi Jingping came to power. Xi Jinping responded by militarizing the disputed islands. It is the least that China should do to protect itself. If some Pinoy fishermen were denied fishing in the surroundings of the islands. So what. Is this a tragedy compared to the 10,000 Islanders in the Pacific Ocean who were sacrificed in a nuclear experiment by US in the 1950s. National security against a possible nuclear war with USSR was the excuse to conduct such an experiment. The Pinoys should stop whinning.
