Im glad you watched this video, it does a good job explaining the system in the biggest football country on earth, but a football country that can feel just as foreign to us Europeans as the sport of football does to you Americans. Learning about the shear scale of Brazilian football alone shows just how massive the beautiful game is.

one problem for Santa Cruz is that it's not even the biggest club in it's own city. Avenida has more fans and more success afaik. Also, probably over 90% of Santa Cruz do Sul population are Grêmio or Internacional supporters, having their own city clubs as only 2nd teams.
speaking a little more of State Leagues, the biggest ones have 3 or more divisions.
In Rio Grande do Sul state league main divison:
Grêmio, Internacional and Juventude play Serie A.
Caxias (same city as Juventude), São José and Ypiranga play Serie C
Avenida, Brasil Pelotas and Novo Hamburgo play Serie D.
So, 9 teams out of 12 are playing national leagues. Not bad at all.

Grêmio won the 43th state league yesterday.
Now the Brazilian League starts and wednesday there is also a South American Cup match.
Here a very cool video inside and outside the stadium, filmed by this guy who travels all over Brazil by bus following the best matches from all big clubs
    czcams.com/video/LahpoK4E2qA/video.html
ps: state leagues are semi-independent of the national league. You can get relegated in your state league and be champion of the national league in the same year. Just what are the odds lol
Most state leagues are dominated by few clubs, usually from the capital.
In Rio Grande do Sul state, Grêmio and Inter won 88 times, since the League started in 1919. So 105 years of League, 88 years the League was won by either Grêmio or Inter.
But in many states, even the usual winner plays in the Serie C or Serie D of the national League.
Grêmio is considered a big club because it's one of the oldest FOOTBALL Brazilian Clubs (1903). Of the big clubs only Fluminense is older, playing football. Flamengo for example is older but they were a rowing club, and started their football team later.
Also because it won 3 South American Cups (Libertadores da América), 2 brazilian leagues, 5 Brazil Cups (and the National Cup in Brazil is considered bigger than Cups in other countries), 1 World Title, and also faced equal to equal, losing on Penalties, to Ajax of Amsterdam, in 1995... a team that was basically the same as the Dutch National team...
